This weekend managed to prove once again that I am getting too old to party like a rock star two nights in a row. The whole thing began Friday night where I set out to, and I quote myself here, "get Lucero drunk", and I am happy to announce that the mission was a complete success. The trade off of that is that recollection of the show is slightly hazy. A lot of the reviews I read leading up to Lucero's show here were about the crowd. That frat boy concentration levels were reportedly getting dangerously high, but [...]

While those of us that live here in Tampa were able to pick up the new HGWT album, Postcards From The Friendly City, over the weekend there was no means for outsiders to pick the album up when I last talked to y'all about the cd. Well, that is no longer the case. You can (and you should) pick up the new album via this link and iTunes downloads are around the corner. While I understand the immediate satisfaction of digital downloads I must say that the packaging of this album is the best I've seen since The [...]

Who doesn't like Eastbound and Down ? I'd venture to guess that it's only folks who haven't seen it and I have yet to meet a single person who's heard The Takers that doesn't like them. Yesterday, during a Facebook exchange Virgil hatched a plan that we should try and get a song by The Takers on Eastbound and Down and I wholeheartedly agree. One problem, neither of us know how to go about it and a couple of hours research last night got me no closer. So, your mission, should [...]

One of the prides of Tampa, Have Gun Will Travel, will spend this weekend playing shows around the state to celebrate the release of their new cd, Postcards From The Friendly City . The cd title is a play on the band's hometown of Bradenton, and it acts as a foreshadowing of the regionalism the band chose to take with the songwriting this time around. Musically, Postcards is a further continuation of their last album, Casting Shadows Tall As Giants . It would be easy to drop an "alt.country" or "americana" descriptor here and [...]

The Dutchess and the Duke are one of the best young bands around these days. They've followed up the excellent She's the Dutchess, He's the Duke with the even better Sunrise/Sunset . I was lucky enough to get the chance to introduce the Duke himself, Jesse Lortz. Here's what he had to say. How is Sunrise/Sunset different to your quasi-self-titled debut? Do you feel that you have honed your craft? We did a month long tour playing acoustically with no vocal microphones or [...]

Golden Strings by ROCKETS We we're honored when D.I.S.C.O. TEXAS sent us this one today. They have what we need here at the house of voules in the land of randomness. With a roster with the likes of Moulinex , Xinobi , Flip and Rockets you can be certain that they will whisk you away to disco heaven long into the morning hours if you ever have any time to travel to Lisbon which is the labels original home. I thought Thursdays [...]
Nearly six months after his mildly entertaining comeback opus Relapse --- and with a sequel looming, according to many reports --- Em has announced his involvement in a new film, the predictably horror-oriented Shady Talez . In addition to a starring role in the movie, the Detroit rapper will produce it, despite being a big-screen novist; in 2006, he was cast in a remake of Have Gun - Will Travel , but the project never surfaced, presumably because of Em's then-crippling battle with prescription pill addiction. (He's sober now, as he continues to remind us with [...]

Well, well, well, here it is. The first themed podcast and we decided to do the dual (collab, if you will) themes of Murder Ballads and Beer. The murder ballads came from y'all's emails and my admittedly shit memory, while the beer came from Rouge Brewery courtesy our Portland friend Lollyrae . I hope I did okay, but I have to admit I am lacking a little confidence on this one. I think the main problem is that I wasn't too sure how I was gonna do it before I started it, then I realized midway through [...]

This time last year I was in total panic mode trying to get everything right for the wife's 30th Birthday . This year we're back to the annual Halloween Party and Erin has more help than she knows what to do with, so I am free to get my rock shows on. So let's talk rock and roll this weekend.... Thursday night we have David Dondero , Whiskey and Co. and Christina Wagner kicking the Halloween weekend off at New World Brewery . David Dondero is probably best known to locals [...]

Frank Yang White Rabbits have got it covered in the name-dropping department. Via TBD Records , they're labelmates with a little British outfit called Radiohead and their critically-hailed second album It's Frightening was produced by Britt Daniel, who sometimes moonlights in a band popular in some circles called Spoon . Yeah, the Brooklyn sextet have got plenty of ammo for cocktail parties, but it doesn't necessarily tell you much about their actual music, does it. Well the Britt Daniel [...]

Captain America is my favorite superhero. There, I said it. Batman may have a more interesting legend. Wolverine may be part of a better-plotted gestalt. Spider-Man may look cooler. But still, I love Cap the most. Why? Maybe it's because he made it okay for nerds to also be patriots? Maybe it's the irony of a blonde-haired, blue-eyed Christian being the scourge of the Nazi John Byrne was the second best Cap man. party—everything they dreamed of, coming to destroy them. [...]
Well, it's Friday and you know what that means. Yes, my Oriental amanuensis Fah Lo Suee and I are off to my old elementary school in Teaneck, New Jersey, which I will be encasing, a la Christo , in triple-ply tin foil to ward off President Scary Black Guy's brainwashing rays during Tuesday's Education speech. Please -- can't we all just think of the children? So posting by moi will more than likely be sporadic for a little while. But in the meantime, here's another little project for us [...]
Lil' Boosie has been goin' through some thangs. The product of Baton Rouge's streets has never been shy about telling his story. While most casual listeners know Bad Azz for his party singles like "Wipe Me Down" and "Zoom," his followers know him as the ambassador to the Gulf Coast streets. Though Boosie has been able to leave his neighborhood for greener pastures, his personal life is as tumultuous as ever. He's currently under house arrest and facing a trial date set for September 28th while braving a tough promotional schedule and [...]
So, it's been about a month since I returned from the yearly wild weekend that is Bonnaroo. Including travel and getting re-acclimated with the real world, that's five fun filled days, which, as much as I try not to admit it, takes a toll on these old bones. Couple that with preparing for, and pulling off a Fourth Of July barbecue and fireworks extravaganza two weeks later all the while being heavily 'medicated' to the point of getting epidural injections in my spine and, well, you could say that I've been worn down pretty thin. [...]

Last Saturday at Bowery Poetry Club , the celebration of the 25th Anniversary of the Minutemen's masterpiece Double Nickels on the Dime was a mixed affair of music, spoken word and storytelling. The highlights of the evening were the three excellent bands, all of whom offered their own versions of Minutemen songs with musical dexterity and enthusiasm, and the special guest finale - the appearance of Mike Watt who was genuinely profoundly moved by the spirit of the event. Watt performed three solo numbers on bass [...]

I'm not a food person. I never have been. As a child my mother had a cache of maybe five recipes she could cook that I would eat. Come to think of it, I'm pretty sure that's not nearly enough dishes to justify use of the word "cache." As a teenager, I managed to somehow become even more picky about food. Peanut butter and jelly was cut from my diet. I became a hamburger, eggs, pizza, bagels guy. As in, that's literally all I ate. I stayed that way until maybe eighteen months ago, when I started dating [...]

John Emil List was a man of faith. He read the Bible daily, taught Sunday school and prayed often. He did everything he could to shelter his wife and three children within the Lutheran faith. Though he failed, it is the way he dealt with his failure for which he will be remembered. John's mother had been a hatmaker and part-time nurse. When her widowed cousin fell ill, she nursed him back to health, and they eventually married. At the time she was 40, he was 20 years her senior. She bore one child, John, whom she [...]

By Duncan Strauss I 'm fortunate enough to host an afternoon drive music show called the Sonic Detour each Wednesday on WMNF, Tampa's 70,000-watt community radio station , and because I live in an entirely different part of the state ( Jupiter Farms , a three-hour drive to Tampa), it just hasn't been practical for me to get plugged into the flourishing Tampa music scene . [...]

Don Van Cleave Nothing At All [mp3] Love You Now [mp3] Side [mp3] by Benham Jones My first interview at Bonnaroo was with Madi Diaz and Kyle Ryan. I was so cracked out from my arrival and kind of jittery at the thought of [...]
