[How did I never notice that Ryan Adams and Bryan Adams share the same birthday? Ryan turns the big three-five today, and Bryan the even bigger five-oh ... meaning he was 9 in the "Summer of '69." Celebrate by hitting a show ...] The Pixies aren't the only iconic band from the 1980s making the rounds — Dinosaur Jr., whose new album "Farm" is arguably as good as anything in their catalog, hits town for a show at the House of Blues. And the bonus: Bassist Lou [...]

The Happy Hollows Monday Residency at Spaceland Starts This Week Sorry for the lack of posts, thanks for sticking with me. I caught Kris Kristofferson at the Walt Disney Concert Hall last night. You've got to be a fan of his poetry, because he's not a dynamic performer. That said, he's a legend and I was happy to see him for a second time. I've missed all the recent "secret" shows, but there are a few more this week... Monday 11/2/09 [...]

Awkwardness and surrealism have never worked better together than on the video for Hearts of Palm UK 's single "I Flow". This female trio performs their synth-heavy track over various mystical images via several green-screen transformations. The beautiful hilarity of these ladies acting so silly manages to uplift the single to an even more wonderfully appealing arrangement of catchy flows. For once, a video actually does sell the song. Hearts of Palm UK have been making quite a splash with their debut album For Life in tow. [...]
![Velella Velella: Live at Capitol Hill Block Party [2008.07.26]](http://cache.elbo.ws/posts/1685828_lg.jpg)
Cassie was insistent I catch Velella Velella . Seriously, she said. I think you'll really dig them. We were hanging out front of King Cobra, a key Capitol Hill Block Party stage a few doors from Comet Tavern. I'm sold, I thought. Sounds good to me. As the band set up on stage I noted a few items... One: There were four or five keyboards. So many, in fact, that the final one wouldn't fit lined up next [...]

So we first heard Hearts of Palm UK (HOPUK) here in LA at Echoplex and we think it's about time we posted about their music. The three-member band is based in Los Angeles and writes rich synth-pop that is quite fitting for the pleasant weather always seen in sunny California. "Would You Believe:" Erika Elektra is plays keyboard and is the lead vocalist (also on keyboard, sequencer, omnichord, guitar and autoharp), while Frankie Rose is the on glockenspiel, miscellaneous percussion and keyboard, and Billy Kaye plays [...]

Another week...another Ten Tracks You Need. It's like I'm being consistent or something. Excuse me while I give myself a pat on my back. Ok. I'm done. Anyway, here's this week's collection of tracks that I've been listening to on repeat. I've included a bunch of RCRDLBL Tracks as well and a few videos. As per usual, I jump all over the place w/the tunes and videos because that's kind of how I listen to music. Morrissey one second, Morgoth the next! Have a good weekend folks. Have fun downloading and I'll see you all on [...]

Because doing thing on time is so last year. I have to admit, of my many would-be-hipster activities, this has been the most challenging by far. Many were the hours spent in bitter self-doubt over the simple choice of who would make the list, and who would be edited away into oblivion. As I anguished, the nights rolled by slowly -- taking their toll on my sanity. I came up with list after list; each one more flawed than the last. I bemoaned my condition to fellow occasional would-be-hipster P.W.C -- and found out [...]

2008 was a fun year full of a lot of After, a lot of late nights and going through a lot of records again we have officially picked our albums of the year. Let's get one thing straight: at thirty-two years old I've become a cranky old man. Hearts of Palm UK's press material tell us that front woman, Erika Elektra, wrote all the songs on guitar then re-recorded them with all electronic beeps and hums. I mean, really, is this a novel approach? Though it brought a smirk to my face, it seems to me that that's all kids are doing these days. Wasn't

I don't know if I've said this before, but I'm a sucker for good bedroom electronic pop. I guess that's why California's Hearts Of Palm UK hooked me so quickly. Profuse organ melodies clothe the soft and engaging vocals of Erica Elektra. Their debut album, For Life ,was released this past October and was mastered in Sweden by Henrik Jonsson (Peter Bjorn & John, Robyn, The Knife, Lykke Li, Camera Obscura). For Life didn't wow me right away, but slowly skulked it's way into my favorites pile. mp3: Hearts Of Palm UK [...]
Hearts of Palm UK , not to be confused with Hearts of Palm, is an indie poptronica group that centers around the softy silk voice of Erica Elektra. You may be surprised to learn after listening to the tracks that all the songs were originally composed on guitar and then transformed into sweetened electronica using a Korg workstation. The tracks were mastered by Henrik Jonsson in Sweden, who also
![Cake On Cake [Feature Band]](http://cache.elbo.ws/posts/1337032_lg.jpg)
Written by Fense One of the first noticeable items about Cake On Cake ( MySpace ) is the name. It's a sweet (no pun intended) take on Bob Dylan's classic Blonde On Blonde . The two, of course, have little, if anything, in common. It's there; but that's not really important in the bigger scheme of things, now, is it? We're here to hear about the music. Yet again, here is a band that is immediately reminiscent of Au Revoir Simone. [...]

TV on the Radio Play the Wiltern Pretty big week for shows. The Who, Madonna, Van Morrison, Tangerine Dream and Beck all have shows. However, I'm more excited about The Dodos, TV on the Radio and The Broken West.... Monday 11/3/08 [Recommended] Parts & Labor / Gowns / Terrors @ the Smell ($5) – I like the new Parts & Labor record. [Recommended] The Western States Motel / Marching Band / [...]

They said it could never work... She was a sentimental girl band, singing about a love that came so close to working; warm, sincere and influenced by folk. He was a cool and subdued synthesizer, driving beats and modulating sine-waves were his specialty; dreaming of bands like I Am Robot & Proud and Freescha, he would never go lyrical... Until he met her... until now. Hearts of Palm UK's new album, "For Life," has wed the the sad, longing bride to the synth-drum kit groom and created a beautiful baby of soft-spoken, heartfelt and wonderfully awesome synth-pop; and it sounds [...]
