A Brief Smile - [...]
Rogue Wave meets the Helio Sequence on Animal Kingdom's debut LP, Signs And Wonders (Warner Bros.). Frontman Richard Sauberlich's cool and ghostly vocals, paired with lighthearted and upbeat tempos, succeed in forming a stripped-down sound with a dusting of melancholy and a sprinkle of '80s pop. The London band additionally thrives in its creative lyrical compositions, [...]

Click here to view the embedded video. I just picked up the new Ramona Falls album Intuit (out now via Barsuk Records ), which is the solo side project from Menomena member Brent Knopf. If you like Menomena, then Brent's solo project is like a familiar slice of bread but instead of whole wheat you're getting whole grains. And like nine of them. Here he is talking about the recording process while laying down tracks for "Going Once, Going Twice." Ramona Falls (named after [...]

English stadium rockers Keane have announced on their website that they will be releasing an expanded version of their debut album, Hopes and Fears , in early November. This special release features the band's early BBC Radio1 sessions with Steve Lamacq and Jo Whiley , demos, and some of their earliest released songs, including tracks from a live EP released in 2005. Championing the band early on, Lamacq contributes the text for the album's liner notes as well. The full tracklisting of [...]

"Intuit" is a pleasant surprise. An injection of happiness into your life. Well maybe it shouldn't be a surprise, because this debut release from Ramona Falls represents one more branch in the Menomena family. Ramona Falls is Brent Knopf and "Intuit" was written and performed by Brent, with guest appearances from about 35 friends, including members of The Helio Sequence, Mirah, Loch Lomond, 31 Knots, Talkdemonic, Nice Nice, Tracker, Dat'r, Dear Reader, 3 Leg Torso, and Matt Sheehy. Like Menomena, the music of Ramona Falls is brimming with ideas and overflowing harmonies. The instrumentation through out [...]

The music of David Bazan and, more specifically, his work with former band Pedro The Lion , has long been one of the culprits in my music library which causes my friends to teasingly accuse me of liking "sad bastard music." While I like to believe that my musical tastes expand beyond such classifications, it is, however, true that some of the saddest and most depressing songs that I know come from directly from Mr. Bazan. His first full length album, Curse Your Branches , starts off [...]

I used to listen to my mom's old 80s cassette tapes and records, merely because I hadn't developed my own taste in music. Even if I was born in the latter half of 1989, I can still say that I'm a child of the 80s. Elly Jackson is a fellow child of the 80s, but listening to he r and recording partner Ben Langmaid 's debut La Roux (in French meaning "red-haired one"), you wouldn't expect the self-proclaimed "ginger boy" to be just [...]

Watch me gush: Moving Mountains are one of 'those' bands. When you hear them, everything falls in to place just right, and it's like you've been looking for them your entire life. Life affirming, if you will. With songs full of massive highs, those moments that feel so perfect, it's no surprise that the young, mostly-bearded four-piece from Purchase, NY have received glowing reviews, and been tapped for support slots with Kevin Devine, Caspian and their (and my) personal heroes, Thursday. Not bad for a band that started in high-school and never planned on going anywhere. [...]

Yeah Yeah Yeahs in the rain Unlike Bumbershoot 2008, which was a gorgeous 70-degrees-and-sparsely-cloudy weekend, Bumbershoot 2009 was a much more Seattlesque weekend. The Yeah Yeah Yeahs kicked off our Sunday afternoon, but between the ugly weather and a lackluster crowd, the show never really took off. I have to admit that I'm only a fan of four or five of the band's "bigger" songs, but even so, the only section of the crowd that was really amped up for the set were the die-hard fans front and center. We made a [...]

It's been a pretty crazy couple of days. So crazy, in fact, that we're going to dig right in here without too much pomp and circumstance. Contributors for these MFNW diaries include Casey Jarman, Michael Mannheimer, Aaron Mesh, Mark Stock, Jenny Booth, Rebecca Raber, Matthew Korfhage and AP Kryza. MFNW Day 1: Wednesday 16th 8.45 pm @ 6th Avenue Walking over to the opening MFNW show and the Roseland Grill is blaring out Fleet Foxes. I [...]

A last-minute replacement for The Shins' James Mercer, Dr. Dog kicked off Thursday's Nike-sponsored, and precariously-named "Bandz in the Hood" lineup at the Wonder Ballroom. The five-piece outfit, led by guitarist Scott McMicken and co-lead singer and bassist Toby Leaman, set the tone for another night-long music extravaganza, mobilizing the crowd (quite literally) with their own blend of bluesy psychedelica and dreamy, Beach Boys-influenced harmonies. Ranging from those candy-coated oohs and aahs to a raspy, whiskey-soaked growl, Leaman and McMicken's vocals kept the set fresh, while fellow bandmates provided an energized, and remarkably tight, backdrop for a not-to-be-missed live set. [...]

Started with The Black Whales . As in all my Bumbershoot, the song choice will be linked to a video. My choice for the Black Whales is Young Blood . I have a pet peeve in watching bands, and singer Alex Robert was a big offender. He kept his eyes closed during the entire performance. You can not connect with an audience when you have your eyes closed. The performance is internal, and you lose us. For this [...]
DOWNLOAD: Ramona Falls - Russia (MP3) Ramona Falls is the new band by Brent Knopf of Menomena . In August, he put out his debut, Intuit , on Barsuk. That record, as mentioned a while back , has guests that include Mirah and The Helio Sequence . A track from it is posted above, and the entire album is currently streaming at Barsuk . Menomena is [...]

Beach House erken 2010'da yeni kaydını sub pop'tan yayımlayacak. Yapılan yazılı açıklama ise şöyle In July the band took a break from touring to head to upstate New York to record with Chris Coady at Dreamland Studios in Woodstock. They spent a solid month in solitude writing and recording in the church-converted-to-studio compound. What they emerged with is their greatest work to date! Beach House's third album will be released on Sub Pop (and on Bella Union overseas) in early 2010... MP3: Beach House - [...]

I think instead of a top-ten year-end list of 2009 albums, I'm going to do one of 2008 albums I now love but managed to miss during 2008. Just kidding! But if I did, topping the list would be Amanda Palmer's Who Killed Amanda Palmer? I've proclaimed my love for its fierceness of spirit and glorious piano playing several times now, so [...]
Bumbershoot , Seattle's Annual Music and Arts Festival starts tomorrow ( Sep 5 ) and continues throughout the Labor Day weekend. Music critic in-residence Drake LeLane will be on the scene at Seattle Center this weekend reporting on all the comings and goings at the festival. In Bumbershoot news, Youngershoot , three days full of "kid-specific and family-friendly activities", makes it inaugural bow at this year's festival. (Ironically, Drake will be attending Bumber "kid free" this year, so I guess we'll have to hear his first hand reviews of Spin The Bottle Jr. [...]
