Tori Amos's holiday album, Midwinter Graces , is in stores tomorrow, as is the Pixies 17-disc Minotaur box set. Among the discs that have already been sent my way, I can definitely recommend Caroline Herring's Golden Apples of the Sun , Hyperstory's self-titled album , Loch Lomond's Night Bats , and Robyn Hitchcock's live album, I Often Dream of Trains in New York (CD & DVD) . Reissues this week [...]

I've had a hard time "getting" Destroyer aka Dan Bejar's band (Swan Lake, New Pornographers, Hello Blue Roses etc). I had a lot of trouble with Trouble In Dreams the first go around and while it sounds better now, I figure that I would stay away from his "Bay of Pigs" EP because as much as I like being challenged by music… it's quite strenuous. Anyway I somehow got pushed into checking out the 13 minute and 39 second track and "Wow" could be one word to describe it. Some tracks are long and drawn out [...]

"Namaste" is a Hindu greeting that means, "The divinity in me bows to the divinity in you." Accompanied by a slight bow, with the hands pressed together at the heart or forehead, it can be used to say either hello or goodbye. It is a word that communicates both respect and an acknowledgement of our shared humanity/divinity. "Namaste Motherfucker" is either the catch phrase of a Mumbai version of Harry Callahan ("Make my day.") or Tony Montana ("Say hello to my little friend."), or the way one greets one's yoga instructor in a New York City yoga class. [...]
Dan Bejar, aka Destroyer , sometime member of The New Pornographers, one third of Swan Lake, and half of Hello, Blue Roses, is an accomplished and applauded indie singer-songwriter. His aptitude for the cyclical, epic, cryptic song and his high-pitched, nasally intonation put him on par with the likes of Sunset Rubdown/Wolf Parade's Spencer Krug and Frog Eyes front man Carey Mercer (who, as they're all friends, un-coincidentally enough, are the other two members of Swan Lake). But, there have always been key differences between Bejar and his compatriots. His voice, for instance, while high and nasally, [...]
I'll say this much - Dan Bejar certainly isn't afraid to experiment. He's gone through plenty of stylistic shifts, either as a contributing member of The New Pornographers and Hello, Blue Roses, or under his main project Destroyer. One alley he hasn't ever ventured down is that of dance music. Sure, he's worked with synths and other electronics before, like on the 2004 Destroyer album "Your Blues," but those sounds acted more as supplements to stripped down melodies rather than driving beats that formed the core of the songs. But keeping with his efforts to keep trying new things, Bejar [...]

You know the feeling. You pick up a record and play that first song and it totally bowls you over or it leaves you totally underwhelmed. Regardless, we have pretty lofty expectations for that first track. Many would argue that the first track is absolutely the most important. It's not that the other tracks aren't great, but there is something special in the opening track of an album. We also all know how it feels to love the first track on a record, but be totally ambivalent to the other tracks and there is nothing more frustrating. So, if the [...]
Hello all, first let me say I am sorry for the mad influx of post and mixes. These sets are some older ones that some of you might have missed the first time around. I remastered all of these and really just tweaked a few things here and there as I didn't want to ruin the original vibe of these mixes. They range from Tech, Electro, Tribal, Progressive and some Trance. I hope that you enjoy them and much Love and Respect to you all. Fractile Twist 320 DDL [...]
As incredible as it sounds, there truly is more music released every year than there is time to listen. An overwhelming fact for sure, especially when faced with the task of keeping track of all these new releases. Fortunately, Consequence of Sound again has your back, here to provide you with an extensive and up-to-date listing of all this quarter's new music. Bookmark this page and check back often, as we'll continue to update this throughout the quarter. And if you've seen anything we've missed, drop us a comment and let us know. [...]

Howdy Folks ! Due to popular demand (and a proper avatar), here's Paul Evans ! Evans ((born 5 March 1938, in Queens, New York) performed in his high school years, got a scholarship to Columbia University and promptly set up his own radio show. His early career days were spent crooning in small clubs and aboard a cruise ship ! Evans began to score hit records in the early '60s, including "Seven Little Girls Sitting In The Back Seat", the fantastic "Happy-Go-Lucky Me" and "Hushabye, Little Guitar". He came up with another hit in 1979 with the morbid "Hello, [...]
This past week, my 9 month old nephew, Spencer (you may remeber him from such posts as this one ), finally learned to crawl. It came with no tears, lots of baby grunting, and a certain aversion to actually mastering that fundamental formula of motion. You see, Spencer kept trying to walk before he learned to crawl, which is not too different, metaphorically speaking, to most of the human race. It seems that we are an impatient species, and we can waste our time mastering one skill before moving onto another. I sometimes wonder what it would [...]

Hello and happy Saturday! In the spirit of being overly communicative (hey, it's my style), my posts will be erratic over the next couple weeks as I haul my possessions over to my betrothed SF-apartment and visit my family on the east coast (here's to showing restraint and not flinging my undergarments at Matt Berninger during The National show in Raleigh this Thursday). I'm also preoccupied with planning my Parisian Picnic by the Sea. I spent all afternoon shopping for yummy wines, winsome decorations, and craft-making supplies. When I sent out the invitation a [...]

All photos by David Greenwald This was the third time I've seen Destroyer, and the third incarnation: I first saw the band in 2005, pre- Rubies , opening for the New Pornographers; head Destroyer Dan Bejar had a beer after about every song, played with his guitar pedals and didn't seem too happy to be there. The lineup changed with 2006's Rawkblog Album of the Year Rubies , arguably Destroyer's most polished, full-sounding release, an album that took advantage of its new players. This was the Destroyer I saw a year ago, playing a fiery, [...]

Destroyer at the Crocodile, Seattle | 6 May 2009 There are many times that I go to a gig expecting to be converted and I was hoping that seeing Destroyer live would put me over the top as a fan. It happened last year at the Silver Jews when I saw Dave Berman in person he single-handedly made me a believer. I had a sense that Dan Bejar might be capable of doing something similar seeing him live. I am what you would probably [...]
Slumberland Records has been on quite the roll in 2009 - as they continue to bring the goods with the announcement of Liechtenstein's debut LP, Survival Strategies In A Modern World . This Swedish trio proves once again that everything great seems to come out of Sweden, even of the fuzzy post-punk variety - a sound that they've managed to cultivate over the few years with their singles Stalking Skills and Apathy . In a couple of weeks, the band will be begin a very short US [...]

I still remember the first hip hop track I ever heard – The year was 1990. The words "So you're a philosopher?" opened the track. A response of "Yes" and "I think very deeply" was scratched out on a turntable. Then it hit. The beat in a four-four timing with a heavy bass line became my instant intoxication. Boogie Down Productions were my gateway to a whole new sound; a whole new world that I was entering with open eyes. A desire to fully understand this music, it's origins and everything it had to offer. I quickly latched on [...]

Carey Mercer has always been someone I've found hard to review or at the very least polarizing. He's the third member of Swan Lake with Spencer Krug (Sunset Rubdown, Wolf Parade) and Dan Bejar (New Pornographers, Destroyer, and Hello Blue Roses). To be fair, I would say I have a man crush on Spencer Krug and really dig some of Bejar's stuff. The last time I picked up a Mercer record was Frog Eyes' Tears of the Valedictorian. I just decided not to review the album after not really being able to get through past the surface. [...]
