Hot on the heels of last year's awesome Find Me A Drink Home , the Lansing, Michigan trio Cheap Girls is back with another great full-length full of straightforward punkish power-pop, My Roaring 20's . There really aren't any huge changes to be found when comparing My Roaring 20's to their debut, but (again) it seems as if Cheap Girls know exactly what it is they do well and just stick with it. The production is (however) a bit better but still retains enough of the lo-fi charm that no one will accuse [...]
by charles lear I met up with four out of five members of Frogwell at Duff's on Marcy Ave. and talked with them while recording on my handy Zoom H2 digital recorder. Duff's is a Metal joint and portions of the captured conversation with these particular art/noise/experimentalists in the midst of crushingly loud macho strang and drung, might find their way into one of my own performances. I'm sure they would approve. [...]
Brothers Joey and Andy Siara sat down with Scott Schultz at Two Boots Pizza the night before leaving for their tour with Harper last spring, and Schultz promptly broke the cassette with the recording. He held onto the spool for six months and finally got it repaired on time for their set tonight opening for Mission Of Burma .

[Birthday wishes to Butch Walker on Saturday. ... Here's what's on my weekend radar, for one reason or another — for a more comprehensive list, please visit Duke at You Set the Scene :] Tonight: It's Week 2 of Julian Casablancas' flashy residency at the Downtown Palace Theatre, and when I saw the opener last week the Strokes frontman-turned-synth-rocker promised to tweak things every week. One change is that a second opening band has been added, the Growlers joining [...]

Ray Davies Appears at the Orpheum on Saturday Night I didn't get up to as much as I'd hoped last week, but did catch Julian Casablancas and the Happy Hollows at Spaceland. Casablancas didn't do anything to win me back, but most of the crowd seemed really into it. I'll definitely be at Ray Davies this Saturday and I'll most likely check out more of the Happy Hollows tonight. Monday 11/9/09 [Pick of the Night] [...]

[Hey, it's Sam Sparro's birthday on Saturday; shouldn't there be a dance party somewhere? Here's how the weekend shapes up ...] Today: Strokes frontman Julian Casablancas starts his monthlong Friday night residency at downtown's Palace Theatre to showcase the music from his solo debut "Phrazes for the Young." The synth-heavy material, with its big pop choruses, is a departure from the Strokes' garage-rock, but it sounded good at his warm-up show Monday night . Rainbow Arabia opens. ... It's the final night [...]

Don't start with me on the pic above . (Okay, Christian Bale is on GQ Magazine 's June Issue, check it out). On a more serious note, I may be pushing the envelope here. But really, this forthcoming months I'll be having the tightest schedule of all and seeing how things are going, a daily or (even weekly) post is out of the question. So I'm doing an advance Monthly Playlist of the best tracks for June. I've added a bunch of remixes and covers as well that I found oddly interesting. Just goes to show you should never [...]

The Happy Hollows Monday Residency at Spaceland Starts This Week Sorry for the lack of posts, thanks for sticking with me. I caught Kris Kristofferson at the Walt Disney Concert Hall last night. You've got to be a fan of his poetry, because he's not a dynamic performer. That said, he's a legend and I was happy to see him for a second time. I've missed all the recent "secret" shows, but there are a few more this week... Monday 11/2/09 [...]

The Happy Hollows [pictured at the Eagle Rock Music Festival] have signed to Los Angeles-based independent label Autumn Tone Records , which in November will give wider release to the trio's self-birthed debut "Spells." The highly regarded (in Buzz Bands land, anyway) album will be released both digitally and physically, under Autumn Tone's new deal with Red Eye Distribution. For Autumn Tone, the four-year-old imprint founded by Justin Gage (proprietor of the popular blog An Aquarium Drunkard ), the Hollows represent the eighth artist on its increasingly diverse roster, and its fourth from Los Angeles. [...]

Cold War Kids , sequestered somewhere in southern regions of L.A. County, are working on their next album, but they announced this week that a new EP, "Behave Yourself," will be out on Jan. 19. The quartet is playing the Wiltern three days later, on Jan. 22. A promotional video they have on their website has some song snippets. ☛ Local Natives' album "Gorilla Manor" will finally see a release — in the U.K., anyway. It'll be out Nov. 2 on Infectious Records. ☛ Kidrockers , the great monthly matinee shows for kids [...]

I saw the awesomeness that was the "East LA Rock n Roll Revue" with The Airborne Toxic Event , The Henry Clay People , Red Cortez twice last week, once here in DC and back home in upstate NY (the latter show also included the beautiful and ethereal harmonies of The Parson Red Heads , the main reason I wanted to see the show). But the job-that-pays-the-bills exploded with deadlines upon my return so I am a bit behind with posting the reviews/photos. I did, however, want to share one of the shining moments of [...]
