Over the past six months, San Francisco DJs have been claiming that their equipment has been seized by police in raids on DJ parties. Even bystanders at the events have had their DJ equipment, such as laptops, seized. The raids and seizures are apparently due to a lack of proper permits for these events, though the claiming and holding of property, reportedly up to three months in some cases, seems suspect. In one case, a benefit for a sculptor was broken up by the police, and laptops, mixers, and CD players were all taken, though the police apparently gave no [...]

In 2004, Annie—Bergen, Norway's sunniest export—scored both club hits and indie cred with her debut album Anniemal . Her sophomore LP Don't Stop was initially announced in early 2008, but got tangled up, as she explains it, in a nasty case of record label drama. "I kept on delivering things but it was never enough," says the singer. Fast forward a year-and-a-half later, and Don't Stop has finally arrived on these shores, thanks to Oslo-based label Smalltown Supersound. Idolator met up with 31-year-old Annie (real name: Anne Lilia Berge Strand) in Los Angeles [...]
When you put together a list of venues where Umphrey's McGee always delivers, you'd have to start with Higher Ground just outside of Burlington, VT. The Chicago-based sextet finished a three-night stand at the rock club on Saturday night that will go down among the best in their history. Whether they were kicking out a spirited dose of improvisation, welcoming one of their friends to the stage for a sit-in or dusting off a rarity, everything Umphrey's touched over the six sets at Higher Ground turned to gold. p Remember that totally cheeky and totally pop duo of Britt Love and Frankee Connolly? Together they are Mini Viva and they are stirring up a storm overseas with their high-grade, infectious tunes that has both pop purists and pop cynics screaming for more. And yes, I must admit, I have a huge crush on these two. They're so cute and the music is so well put together. After successfully creating a buzz and chart success in the U.K. with their debut single "Left My Heart For Tokyo," Mini Viva is gearing up [...]

This was an awesome show. I could've gone on for pages about how much I enjoyed Carnivores and Kurt Vile . Fortunately, I'm getting a chance to write more about the former, and I'm sure the latter will return soon, having recently signed to Matador . (My review of Childish Prodigy will appear in this month's Stomp and Stammer .) ATL folks, if you haven't checked out Carnivores yet, please do! You won't be sorry. [...]

Artwork by Spencer Higgins When I first heard Stimming's debut album, Reflections , in early 2009, his organic, cobblestone house tracks plucked and pulled themselves in a very different direction than his house peers. Of course now 2009 seems like a year besotted in hand drums and organic textures, yet Stimming's sound still crackles with a unique energy and pluck that's far more compelling. Take "Silver Surfer" from Reflections , a spidery crawl through Stimming's string section with melodies that sting like a snapped rubberbands. Seriously, take it: [...]

A reduction linocut by artist Dave Lefner. Studio 212, Moulton Ave. LA is home to the largest art colony in the world. That's right, the world. It's one of our city's best kept secrets. Twice a year, the Brewery Art Association near downtown LA opens its doors to art aficionados, collectors, students, curios onlookers, and those who only wish they could support themselves based solely on creative genius. I fit into those last two categories. The following photo collection reflects my first experience at the Brewery Artwalk , which took place this past Saturday and [...]

This slab's touted only by dudes with money in their pockets to hunt down dusty originals. Not quite tripe, but Gary Higgins turned in some pretty boring stuff.
