Holcombe Waller is one of those underground artists that doesn't seem to care about what is happening on the surface of the popular music landscape. He writes songs in his apartment in...
Much to cover tonight, as we all brace for this week's MusicFest Northwest. Performances of note this weekend include Chris Garneau and Holcombe Waller at Mississippi Studios, The Old Believers at the Old Church, Celilo at the White Eagle, and the 4th Annual Muddy Boot Organic Festival , the first day of which closes tonight with the March Fourth Marching Band. We'll look to tomorrow's second day of action, which features music beginning at noon from the Midnight Serenaders, the Portland Cello Project, Stephanie Schneiderman, and Weinland, amongst a day of panel discussions, workshops and children's activities on the [...]

It's official. The blazing summer is upon us Portlanders (insert mild hysterical relief here). It means so many things, from Pickathon to PDX Pop Now, to having the option of blasting your favorite summer record with the windows rolled down. But being the friendly public radio station we are, we wanted to hear more than just ourselves talk about what album says summer best. So we asked some of them industry people that question (and a few other random ones of course). Don't be shy to tell us your answers too. [...]

Here's an alphabetic list of all the reviews until now. Aaron Nazrul - Butterfly Man Canada is coming on strong, this year. I will not namedrop... (Except that Jenn Grant , and her wonderful song "dreamer" (from her [...]
Some news from the Holcombe Waller camp, via a Facebook message (ah, technology). This comes after a weekend of shows from Waller and his ensemble, the Healers, and, for those of us who couldn't make it, perhaps the most...

Even though it's already somewhat underway, I still thought I'd mention the Under The Radar Festival which is happening at The Public Theater and other venues around NYC until January 18th . All shows are $15, click here to purchase tickets. One Under The Radar show that some readers here might find particularly interesting is Reggie Watts ' Transition , described as a "...a cutting-edge comedic explosion of stereophonic effects and multimedia interactions." Sounds cool. [...]
Here we are with more great lists, lists of great music and from great friends. The good folks over at You Crazy Dreamers (of which I blog for as well - check us out!!) have provided a list of some solid music from the last year. The list while put together from Olivier, with input from the team that includes Laura, Martin, Trini and myself. Despite the fact that we span 4 countries and 2 continents, we still connect on a regular basis if for nothing else then the sharing of great music. But [...]
"We tend to whitewash history," begin the notes that accompany the new compilation (D)early Departed: True Lies in Song Unearthed From Lone Fir, before concluding, "All the greed and cruelty in the world today was around long before Portland was born." That's a relief. The benefit album, with proceeds going to the Friends of Lone Fir Cemetery, seeks to uncover fifteen rather sordid tales from Portland's past with the help of a number of recognizable (and living) names from the local scene. Storm Large is here, as are the Adams (Shearer of Weinland and Selzer of Norfolk & Western), Amelia [...]
[UNDERGROUND MUSIC] Creative sparks come in the strangest places, and several local songwriters recently found macabre inspiration in one of Southeast Portland's oldest and most beautiful spots, Lone Fir Pioneer Cemetery (est. 1855). An enchanting new collection titled (D)early Departed: True Lies in Song Unearthed from Lone Fir Cemetery gathers tracks by some of Portland's finest folk-pop songwriters, each imagining the life—and relating the death—of a resident of the historic burial ground. The concept came to creator Kate Sokoloff, who co-produces Live Wire! radio, in conversation with her friend Mary Miller of Friends of [...]
Another great reason to be as enthusiast as Laura for this promising October Month is the forthcoming performance of Holcombe Waller . It's been about two months, I'm exchanging some mails with this Portland based songwriter, requesting demos and asking for an interview. Following a kind message (review and interviews will come soon), I've received this announcement : Dear world, While insanity looms in the political arena and international markets crumble around us, let me invite you to a wonderful evening [...]
Rich ! It's the first word which surfaced from my mind when thinking about sharing with you my emotions after 3 months long of perusing the third collection of my favorite Utah songwriter : Colby Stead. ' So It Goes ' is an intense and comfortable patchwork of Colby's amazing talent. Based on a close canvas than his previous album 'No', most of the new tracks are delivering new colors and opening vast territories ; some paths recrossed, some discovered. Rich, I'm rich. So, in the right catholic path that I've been teached ; [...]
