Sebastian Mlynarski When I rounded up all the bits of information around Holly Miranda's solo project back in January , I had no notion that interest in it would eclipse that given to her main band, The Jealous Girlfriends . But her more atmospheric approach is certainly more in line with what people expect/want to hear wafting out of Brooklyn these days and it has apparently tickled more ears than the Girlfriends' heaver, more guitar-driven rock did. So while the Girlfriends take a deserved break, Miranda has been busy - [...]

Death Cab For Cutie forsangeren Ben Gibbards hyggeprojekt The Postal Service rendte med 2. pladsen, blandt andet foran to [...]

In the spring of 2005 Bob Dylan hired some new guys for his band. Nothing unusual there; Dylan tends to switch around his band every year or so. Except then, for the next four and a half years he didn't change a thing. Since that spring fans grew a little more tired of those same five people with each passing leg of the so-called Never-Endi ng Tour. Were these guys the second coming of The Band or something, fans might have been more forgiving, but soon this lowercase-"b" band turned every [...]
Speaking to Spinner, the Hold Steady front man looks back on his first incarnation in Lifter Puller.
The fine folks over at A.V. Club have posted their best-of-the-decade music list today, and at number one they've got the White Stripes' White Blood Cells. That pick is sure to start some rabble-rabble below, but it's a solid pick, backing away from the easy gimme of putting Kid A on top. Though I do take umbrage with calling White Blood Cells "true," since most of the songs are far from any "truth" as I know it. Still though, solid pick. The top ten is rounded out by [...]
Filed under: News , New Music , Exclusive Before they were in the Hold Steady , Craig Finn and Tad Kubler were members of Lifter Puller , a rock outfit that was a fixture on the Minneapolis scene. After releasing a few albums, the post-punk quartet called it quits in 2000 but found a wider audience in the subsequent years. Thanks to renewed fan interest, Lifter Puller's entire catalogue will be reissued with bonus material and an oral history on Dec. 1, letting Hold Steady fans hear [...]
Welcome to day two of my favorite albums of the aughts. I should remind everyone that these are MY favorite albums of the past decade, which coincidentally means they might not be the same as yours. Compiling this list was an arduous task and honestly it could be different every single day depending on my mood. It just so happens that this is the final product of months of work and is what goes out on the internets for everyone to see. Anyways I hope you enjoy and maybe even stumble upon something you haven't heard in awhile. [...]
Thursday, November 19, 2009 Today's Quick Mention: I only really know Lifter Puller by name, so it was a nice surprise yesterday to find out that Craig Finn's old band is making a comeback of sorts via reissues and the like. Pitchfork has all the details here. Definitely give it a look if you like the Hold Steady. While I'm usually pretty good at remembering to take the necessary exploratory step from single to full length, on occasion there are bands that [...]

One of my favorite features of Pitchfork.tv is "Faces in the Crowd," a show where a few fans are hand-picked from the audience of a show to go backstage and pick their favorite artist's brains. The most recent episode features two folks talking to Craig Finn of the Hold Steady, one of my favorite bands. One of the fans asks only about Finn's stance on homelessness and religion in social services. Craig's response? "That's a pretty heavy question!" But then he goes on to link his answer to his music, and quite convincingly. Awesome. Check it out HERE .
One of the overriding themes of this blog is the fact that, quite frankly, I'm getting on a bit. Yeah, sure, I'm not quite reading Q or Mojo yet, but I'll be 40 in a few years and that mid-life crisis is going to start gnawing at my toes soon. If I start doing posts about my knees hurting or how I'm going to go out and buy me a Porsche, then you know it's hit me right between the eyes. In the interim I shall just do posts like these, in which I bemoan the [...]
How to make a variety show for adults? When you're tired of half-baked cabarets that take you back to bad college theater, Radio Happy Hour is a giant boon. Sam Osterhout and the team behind this unpredictable show have nailed it: last week's guests--Chuck Klosterman with Craig Finn and Tad Kubler of The Hold Steady--were not only real performers, they were articulate and game for anything, even

On his last effort ( review ), Jon Epworth wanted us all to know it's not the size of the room you play, it's the songs you write. He focused on substance over style, holding onto the fleeting notion that it's not what you sell, it's what you make. Some might call the notion naive, other's idealistic but as the music industry finds more and more cracks in the foundation, it's important to know that the music isn't suffering. I guess considering Turn Off Your Name II is the second piece to his puzzle, [...]

America, get ready for V.V. Brown! The British soul-pop artists is gearing up to release her debut LP, titled "Traveling Like The Light," in the the U.S. on February 9, 2010 on Capital Record. The album is filled with catchy tunes that hold a steady middle between throwback R&B and contemporary pop - an unexplored muscial territory that VV likes to refer to as "do wop indie." Watch my video interview with V.V. in which talks more about her music, album and coming to America. In anticipation of her full-length release, the MTV [...]

The problem with a list like this is the "shoulds". You know, the albums you feel like everyone else will pick, so you "should," too? Well, this time I decided not to deal with those. My list is based on the number of times I listened to these albums since they came out, whether I love them so much I already know every word to every song, how much it moved me, etc. This is a personal list. It isn't intended to be complete or controversial. That said, I know I'll get crap for [...]
Let's review the ground rules here. The Mystery Date song is not necessarily something I believe to be good. So feel free to rip it or praise it. Makes me no never mind. Rather the song is something of interest due to the artist, influences, time period... Your job is to decipher as much as you can about the artist without research . Who do you think it is? Or, Who do you think it sounds like? When do you think it [...]
Here a SimpleViewer Flash gallery should be displayed. Click here to open the post in your browser to see the gallery. All photos by David Greenwald John Darnielle is a complicated man. His Mountain Goats have risen from their early days as solo, lo-fi underdogs to their current incarnation, a crackerjack four-piece band playing to an audience bleating out every word. His long-awaited overnight success was a source of obvious joy to the songwriter on Sunday night, a smile on his face and manic energy worthy of the Hold Steady's [...]

RJD2 is headlining Donewaiting's 7 Year Anniversary February 5th in Columbus and we couldn't be more delighted. In the past our anniversary's line-ups weren't slouchs. Last year's event was the start of a pretty good year for quite a few of the performers: - Envelope became CD101's favorite rapper . - Adulture moved to Chicago and formed a disco- house group Le Principle which promplty signed to Tommy Sunshine's Brooklyn Arts label and will be on comps with Felix da House cats. - And of course DW [...]
