It's been some time since we've checked in with New York band HOPEWELL. You may recall us heavily featuring their track 'Calcutta' starting back around 2006. They've had a lengthy history that includes countless singles and compilations, and opening for My Bloody Valentine on their recent reunion tour, working in the past with producer Dave Fridmann (Flaming Lips, MGMT, Clap Your Hands Say Yeah), recording a Peel session live at Abbey Road Studio, and playing Reading and Leeds Festivals - all without the help of a large label, manager or booking agent. Well, several [...]

One facet of music blogs that I've always admired is the community aspect in regards to highlighting the best of what a city has to offer. It's something that I always wanted to support and be a part of, but never truly experienced due to living in a much smaller town. Though, I was somewhat nearby the Atlanta area, I was still only on the fringes of that community. Now, living here in Salt Lake City, albeit only a few months, I had an idea in early December to gather as many lists as possible from [...]

Recommended Show: FRIDAY, OCTOBER 23, 2009 SCHOOL OF SEVEN BELLS @ MUSIC HALL OF WILLIAMSBURG 66 North 6th Street Brooklyn, NY 11211 $20, 8PM With this being the start of the weekend and CMJ still going on, there should be some good shows tonight. There are some pretty good ones, but nothing so amazing as to be obvious. However, School of Seven Bells performance at Music Hall of Williamsburg tonight should be pretty memorable--and just off the beaten path enough that badge holders MIGHT be able to get in without too much hassle. [...]

So, I don't know if I've already mentioned this enough already, but I'm going to NEW YORK on Sunday for a week of tomfoolery and Big Apple based fun. We've also chosen this week in particular to head across the sea as it's CMJ Music Marathon and there are some pretty fucking cool bands playing. A fair few that we've featured on this here blog in fact. Hooray for us and coolness! But, my problem is I just can't process this list of bands who are playing. There are too many for my [...]

Hudson Valley psych heroes return with its most out-there recording to date. There aren't two finer bands representing the rich rock history of New York's Hudson Valley quite like Hopewell and Mercury Rev. And when Rev frontman Jonathan Donahue invited the Dutchess County psych rockers to create a 30-minute piece of improvised space magic for his radio show on the Woodstock-based alt-rock station WDST-FM, that little jam session set the tone for Hopewell's finest and most out-there album to date. Hopewell surely hopes you consider its sixth...

CMJ released the band schedule for its 2009 Music Marathon & Film Festival yesterday, which is about as good a sign of fall hitting New York as the return of apple cider at Greenmarket. The festival runs from Oct. 20 - Oct. 24 and includes various venues throughout the city, and the list of featured artists would probably take all four days to read through. But skimming the selection reveals a fairly equal distribution of well-known acts like Atlas Sound and Deer Tick , anonymous locals (including krautrock-y Jeff Buckley-channelers Pocketknife), twenty-two bands who [...]
The press release below doesn't actually list all the acts performing at CMJ this year, so you're probably better off checking out cmj.sched.org to get a true idea of what's happening during this year's marathon. Of course, sched.org is a little confusing too and it doesn't list unofficial events and day parties (as far as I know), so you'll have to wait a little bit longer for info to trickle out from the blogs and other unofficial sources. Lastly, even though the press release says the schedule is "final", you can pretty much bet that things will shift [...]
Directed by Art BoonparnThe cavernous echoes in Hopewell's music recall psychedelic music, but I wouldn't say they're a psychedelic band. Their sound may be hazy, but their playing isn't. Tribal drums and tight guitars give the music a powerful punch most "trippy" music just doesn't have. The band's latest LP is Good Good Desperation and it's out now via Tee Pee Recs. Here are two tracks from the
Hopewell "Island" from Good Good Desperation I am falling in love with these Jap-Cult film turning into awesome videos. 1971's "Throw Away Your Books, Let's Go Into The Streets" by director Shuji Terayama, inspired Art Boonparn aka the Painless Surgeon to make a video for psychedelic rock band, Hopewell . The song Island rocks well side by side with this Super-8 gritty video. You can purchase Good Good Desperation here . Hopewell [...]
