April 20 will see the release of the third album from Portland, Oregon's very own Horse Feathers . This will be their second album released on Kill Rock Stars , following on from 2008's excellent "House With No Home". This album also sees the first from the band that doesn't feature Peter Broderick . Horse Feathers lineup is now songwriter and lead man Justin Ringle, violinist Nathan Crockett, cellist Catherine Odell and multi-instrumentalist Sam Cooper. "Thistled Spring" contains ten tracks and is definitely an album that I am looking forward to hearing upon its release. [...]

Today, Yeasayer released their new album, Odd Blood , which is still working its way through my brain. The band has always been amazing live and bring those talents to the Majestic Theatre in Madison along with Sleigh Bells on Wednesday, April 28th . Odd Blood is currently available as a $3.99 digital download here . Also out today is Hot Chip's One Life Stand which was just given Best [...]

In the past, the music of Horse Feathers—the vehicle for Justin Ringle's absolutely beautiful folk songs—has often been associated with the winter. That's not to say that Ringle's tunes are cold, but on the band's last album, 2008's House With No Home , he wrote songs about loneliness and isolation that just screamed (OK, whispered) for a snowy morning and a cup of tea. But on Horse Feathers' new record, it's a different season that gets some love. Due out on April 20 (insert 4/20 joke here) via Kill Rock Stars, Thistled Spring is supposedly a [...]

We loved House with No Home. It was a string-laden, bleak, wintry affair, filled with gorgeous vocals, delicate instrumentation and well-written folk tinged songs of loss. Portland based Justin Ringle with his group Horse Feathers returns on April 20th with their aptly titled third record Thistled Spring ( Kill Rock Stars ). While we've yet to get a taste of the album, the release promises: "an album of rebirth, renewal, and fragile hope. The sun is out in the world evoked by this music, and in the first couple of songs it feels [...]

I am pretty late on this one and for that I apologize. I was supposed to give these away back in December but life got crazy, the discs got buried in my computer room and next thing you know I'd plum forgotten about 'em. Then, the other day I was cleaning up said computer room so I could put my beer fermenting cooler in it and I found them. That leads us up the now, where, as late as it may be, I am gonna give them away to y'all. According to Virgil, he was inspired by a [...]
Last year Horse Feathers stopped by to film three tunes for My Old Kentucky Blog's LandroMatinee series, all from 2008's Kill Rock Stars release House with No Home , including "Curs in the Weeds" above. The band's lineup has changed a little since this video was recorded (cellist Heather Woods Broderick has moved on, releasing a marvelous solo record and now currently playing with Danish group Efterklang) but here's a welcome look back to that session. Watch all three tunes here . Horse Feathers aren't the only Portland band to stop by [...]

Horse Feathers It was a modest and older crowd at the Bottom of the Hill one Wednesday night in San Francisco, all waiting patiently for a special evening with the always wonderful Horse Feathers . TV Mike And The Scarecrowes Combining wistful, storytelling lyrics with folksy, jangling chords, shimmering and virtuosic fingerpicking, and deliberate gestures, TV Mike & the Scarecrowes invariably recalled the glory of an amphetamine-strained 70s folk rock movement. [...]
![Leonard Mynx preps another free album, Le Petit Mort [Album Review]](http://cache.elbo.ws/posts/2301873_lg.jpg)
Leonard Mynx is following up his debut EP with another free album entitled Le Petit Mort . Offering free music to find your fanbase was a marketing tactic also used by Joe Pug and it undoubtedly helped him in with ticket sales as he started touring. Perhaps Mynx has a similar strategy. His previous album, Vesper , was sparse and mostly acoustic. This effort called on many Portland musicians, whose other projects include Norfolk and Western, The Decemberists, M. Ward, Horse Feathers, Loch Lomond, Audie Darling, Laura Gibson, Jolie Holland [...]

No real surprises to report. Beyoncé earned a bundle of Grammys. Lady Gaga delivered a rousing - and surprisingly uncontroversial - duet with Elton John . Taylor Swift also cleaned up, though her number with Stevie Nicks sounded a tad off (as did Slash's guitar solo during T-Pain's performance). Best prop goes to Best Comedy Album winner Steven Colbert , who pulled an iPad out of his jacket during his monologue. And kudos to Kings of Leon for admitting they were a tad drunk while accepting the Grammy [...]

I think it's safe to say that no one in the Portland music scene has ever attempted a project like Into the Woods . Where most online music videos are easily digestible, hovering around the four minute mark, the debut episode of Into the Woods gives us over 17 minutes of Wampire. Think about that for a second: it's almost a mini movie. I'll admit that I originally feared such a long run time, but this thing is just flat out gorgeous; from the shots of the band gathering friends in a van to the slow-mo [...]
Sometimes, when a bit intoxicated and in the presence of a certain sort of, well, more emotional music a strange feeling takes over my face. A well of emotion so great behind the thin layer of my skin, it feels as if a gentle force is pulling my head towards the stage. It might be [...]
The folks at NX35 just posted a new blog entry on their site, effectively announcing the adds we already warned you would soon come. And, well, this list of 45 new acts (add that to the 123 previ... Having laid Floyd to rest, the men of the Corps set out again up the Missouri towards the Mandan Village. Private Patrick Gass would be promoted to Sergeant as his replacement. The very same day Private George Shannon, who would develop something of reputation among the men for getting detached from the expedition turn up missing. He would return a full sixteen days later (note that Clark mistakenly reports this as 12). It is however, the incident with the Teton Sioux (Lakota) which would prove to be the most dramatic, and [...]

photo by steven robbins In case some of you don't know, my brother has recently joined the Coast Guard and gotten stationed in Honolulu, Hawaii. While your immediate reaction may be, "Holy Cow! That is awesome!"; since Steve has been stationed in Hawaii, he has bought a broken moped, had surgery on his big toe, and he is away from family. To be fair, he's exploring a place that everyone that isn't there, wishes they were. So to keep him company and in hopes it will make him feel better, I've made a little mixtape with [...]

It's the end of the world as we know it, and Ghost to Falco feels fine. IMAGE: Cape & Chalice Records When Eric Crespo started writing what would become Ghost to Falco's third album, Exotic Believers, in 2007, he was fretting about the end of the world—or rather, trying to avoid contributing to the end of the world. But the books he'd been reading—by author/environmental activist Derek Jensen—didn't leave much room for optimism. So if there's a theme to Exotic Believers, "I guess it's about coming to grips [...]
NME recently published details about the upcoming Music Go Music album, Expressions (March 22 release date). The LA-based band will be heading to London to play gigs at Hoxton Bar and Grill (where I saw Horse Feathers) on February 9, and The Lexington (where I saw King Charles) on February 11. Below is the tracklist for the new album as well as...
