Like New Year's Eve , Halloween is another holiday that a lot of bands choose to celebrate in style. There's just something about mixing the live concert experience with all the fun and choas of Halloween that really brings out the freaks. While most bands typically play into the Halloween vibe in some way, touring bands often approach Halloween as an opportunity to really create a unique live music event. Just as we did with our New Year's Eve concert round-up , we've compiled a list of Halloween concerts that will be going on this weekend (see below [...]

By request, here is a transcript of an interview I did with Glenn Danzig in early 2007. It was for The Lost Tracks Of Danzig , a compilation I heartily recommend. Parts of this interview appeared in a feature in Unrestrained! #35. Of all the interviews I've done, Danzig's left the worst taste in my mouth. It came more from his tone than what he said; he was understandably quite jaded from having to do press. In hindsight, his belligerence is actually refreshing. Too many [...]

Welcome to MEGA RIFF FRIDAY Oh children, let me explain this beauty. So let's say you want to hear some good hard rock j-a-double-emms. Because the weather is awesome and your shirt is uncomfortable anyway. But you don't really know where to go for some jams. Who can turn you on to some new stuff? ETHAN F*CKING MILLER, man, that's who. The man behind Howlin Rain and the Bay Area's own god of the heavy riff. Turns out he's got a blog called Silver Currant - it's only occasionally updated, but each [...]

If you heard Akron/Family's live taping on KCRW earlier this week, you know you're in for a crazy rock show. Akron/Family will be playing at the El Rey Theatre this Saturday, August 29th along with Howlin' Rain and Scenestar favorite...
Outside Lands week in San Francisco is off and rolling. Daily lineups and schedules have been set. You can start prepping your comfortable walking shoes and figuring out the best way to navigate Muni over the course of the weekend (let's hope more buses have been added this year, although you can always pony up some more dough for a shuttle pass ). Whether or not you'll be making the trek to Golden Gate Park this weekend for the music, the food, and the beauty, you can also check out the official [...]

Here's a look at the artists that appeared for the first time on the Future Sounds radio show on WOXY.com ... THE XX MYSPACE HOMETOWN: London Ok, so The XX is on everyone's playlist these days. We haven't seen such blanket blog hype about someone in some time, and from early listens, it's deserved. Unsigned for another 5 minutes. [...]

Joe Pernice Appears at McCabe's on Saturday Anybody make it to Sunset Junction this weekend? Any highlights? I did make it to Elvis Costello last week. I read a glowing review in the LA Times, but I agreed with my concert companion when he said "This is more soulless than Disney's Country Bear Jamboree." In addition to wrecking others' classics, he even wrecked some of his own. This is a pretty fantastic week to be a music fan in LA. The only problem is all the [...]
The psych folk band will be coming to the El Rey, this Saturday (August 29th). Howlin' Rain and Lucky Dragons will be opening, it should be a tremendous show. Check out a great live video that Vincent Moon directed, below. The band is touring in support of their latest disc, Set 'Em Wild, Set 'Em Free . If you haven't picked it up yet (it came out in May, get on it!) you can do so here ( LP , CD , or MP3 ). Akron/Family- River

BIG week in the Bay. With several Outside Lands After-parties and the festival itself , there is no shortage of things to do here. Also a visit from Ted Leo, a record release party, and a country music legend stops by an unlikely venue. Tonight we have The Matches playing the final date off their tour with Judgement Day and Dizzy Balloon at the Fillmore, Six Organs of Admittance and Master Musicians of Bukkake rock The Independent, Fleet Foxes drummer and creator of [...]

"Bob Dylan has taken a distinct turn for the weird lately. First there were reports that the smell emanating from a portable toilet in the grounds of his California home was distressing neighbours, then came news that the enigmatic musician had been picked up by New Jersey police for loitering outside a house in the pouring rain. Sandwiched between the bizarre incidents, Bob announced he is to record an album of Christmas standards. Fans may have stuck by him throughout the musically self destructive late 60s, the God-bothering late 70s and the Grateful Dead-collaborating-Madonna-imi tating mid 80s, but surely even Bob's [...]

Benjy Davis can write one mean love song. This I already knew. What I found out tonight is that he can also sing the shit out of it too. I walked into Martyrs' club to the familiar refrain of his amazingly catchy anthem, "I Love You" ( yeah I got the time wrong and missed the first five songs, fuck me! er, I mean, forgive me? please, darlin? ). He stood bold on stage, surrounded by his band; the gifted bass player, Matt Rusnak, who works the entire length of his instrument in a very solid manner; Jonathan Lawhun, who [...]

One of my favorite bands, Akron/Family is coming to Louisville, Kentucky's 21c Hotel/Museum on September 20, 2009. They are mostly folk-sounding, but throw in a health serving of electronic and experimental elements. I've seen a few shows at 21c and they all have been good. I hope they start doing this more often. Louisville will be the last stop on a pretty hefty tour, so I hope they end with a bang. Jeffrey Lewis and Slaraffenland open. Not sure about ticket info yet, but when we find out, we'll get this updated. [...]

Akron/Family will end their late summer/early fall North American schizo-folk tent revival in the River City at one of the city's most intriguing venues, the 21C Museum Hotel , on September 20. The first leg of their upcoming tour features psych roots luminary and helluva nice guy Wooden Wand , with Jeffrey Lewis & The Junkyard and Slaraffenland rounding out the rest of the shows. The dates: Wed. Jul. 22 Cleveland, OH @ Rock & Roll Hall of Fame Thu. [...]
