Holly Miranda's new album, The Magician's Private Library ( XL Recordings ) was produced by Dave Sitek of TV on the Radio in Brooklyn, NY, and includes contributions from Sitek and bandmates Kyp Malone and Jaleel Bunton, Eric Biondo and Stuart Bogie of Antibalas, and Holly's long-time violinist, Marques Toliver. It should be noted that the vocals and horn section on this album are amazing. The theme is one of break-ups, loneliness and the sometimes disappointing search that occurs while stumbling through life, hoping to meet someone new without getting hurt again. Miranda shows [...]
Last nite, I watched the Super Bowl, because I am currently working in a mainstream office environment, and I secretly feel insecure when every1 else is talking abt a mainstream event, yet I don't have a progressive opinion to 'share' that goes over every12 heads. The Super Bowl seems like a more fulfilling viewing event than awards shows like the Oscars or Grammys or the BCS championship because you have 2 forces/teams 'battling' to be the champion, instead of just voter opinions and computer algorithms. Did u have a 'Super Bowl party' with chips, dips, meats, brewskies, [...]
Friday, February 5, 2010 It's a short week for films and I think we're all better off for it. If a Nicholas Spark's romantic piece, a new John Travolta film and a limited release horror flick from the sometimes-loved, sometimes-hated man behind Hatchet are all the studios can muster, I think a three-film weekend is called for. As always, the acerbic and intelligent Alex will be adding her two cents to the proceedings at hand. Thanks for reading. Hitting Theaters This [...]
Class A Comfort Hey check out this lovely poem I found (it tries to say much about human nature and succeeds): by Sam Walter Foss (1858 - 1911) One day, through the primeval wood, A calf walked home, as good calves should; II But made a trail all bent askew, A crooked trail as all calves do. Since then two hundred years have fled, And, I infer, the calf is dead. [...]

Fan Fiction, aside from an ingredients panel, is the most marginal of literary genres. Since the 17th century when Cervantes' Don Quixote was sabotaged by amateur scribblers, Fan Fiction throughout the ages has clung to the underbelly of good writing like barnacles on the Starship Enterprise . Last month I was challenged by Music To Spazz By Jingle Producer Nutley Sam Elwitt to partake in a literary joust of the schlubbiest kind: an Adam-12 Fan Fiction Contest. Adam-12 Fan Fiction really does exist and it's serious business [...]

IT'S NOT AS BAD AS 1947.... Whilst discussing this fearsome winter we're having, my old mum was telling me of how bad the snow was in 1947, and how she had met my dad - who had dug for hours to rescue her from the cut-off Co-op in Cleckheaton. From Blitz to blizzards, you could say. It got me thinking that thankfully, I too have personal romantic, quixotic wintry stories I can regale upon my descendants in the years to come: 1981/1982 – Leeds General Infirmary. Over New Year. February 11: The Marquee Room , Calgary AB March 17: SXSW Showcase , Darwin's Pub, Austin TX Popular in many places, you may have heard about Clea Roddick. The Calgarian musician has conquered the TV licensing brigade and won the hearts of many through extensive radio play in the United States, but now the successful songbird is playing a show in her own city of Calgary, as a prelude to a smashing performance upcoming at SXSW, North America's premier industry based music festival. Don't miss these rare performances at the [...]

Duck Dive The motionless cyclicality of being a bus driver is what I imagine hell to be like. Not only the monotony, but the being constantly confronted at all directions by human kind at it's most careless and bitchy, as people use buses and no one else. The unrelenting ding of the bell, the panicky pursuit of late-comers with their clothes and grocery bags blowing grotesquely in the wind, the occasional dick-flapping crazies and verbal abusives, bike-riders who feel they own the road tapping their umbrellas [...]

Inviting, open-ended album of loss, loneliness and meandering hope Freedy Johnston opens his new album, his first new material since 2001's Right Between the Promises , with a ukulele strum and a lyric that searches optimistically for answers. The quality of his voice against the stripped-down arrangement highlights the arresting, bell-like clarity of his tone, and the lyric playfully strides between a literal ode to a found coin and a metaphorical hand outstretched to a lost girl. Producer Richard McLaurin leavens the ukulele's chipper tone with more quizzical and [...]
Warning: You will not find Animal Collective, Dirty Projectors, or Grizzly Bear on this list. (Loses 99/100 of potential audience...) Now then. Here are 25 songs that I adored in 2009, in no particular order. Mexican Chili Taco Fiesta - Tamales Oaxaquenos (via KEXP). If you had told me that I would include a mostly instrumental song about Oaxacan tamales, where the only lyrics I can understand are the title words of the song, on my year-end mix, well, I might not have laughed at you, but I [...]

So. It's been a while. Nearly a month. I've been tearing up my Tumblr but I've abandoned you all and for that I am sorry. I'm not sure the fate of BLnD - whether I'll reserve it for big posts/lists or if I'll start it back up. What do you want? Regardless, here are the best movies of the past decade. I've lived in Portland for about 30 years now. In that time I have come to believe that the average Portland resident is just a bit different than most other people in the world. There's a certain something that diverts their brain waves slightly off the course most would consider normal. This is, for the most part, a good thing. At other times, the differences backfire, with curious, befuddled results. I'm referring to last week's Northwest run of concerts by the Cascadia Yulegrass Project, in particular, their Portland [...]
11) Bell Orchestre - As Seen Through Windows Horn-heavy orchestrated post-rock. Less doom and gloom than some of their contemporaries, it's at times lilting, pastoral, and ethereal. Definitely more cohesive than their previous effort. Seizure city: 12) Dinosaur Jr. - Farm The original Dinosaur Jr. line-up once again prove that they're capable of sounding exactly the same as they did 20 years ago. And who [...]
