When dashing Danish duo The Raveonettes released In & Out Of Control to the masses last month, fans lucky enough to purchase the record from select indie retailers were rewarded with an exclusive bonus disc featuring "Planes Do Crash" & "The Chosen One," two never-before-heard tracks. Record Store Day powered the promotion, pointing exclusive-hunters to retailers where the bonus disc was available. Of course, it was a "while supplies last" deal, so only a handful are still available (check out the website for details). But just as the stockpile begins to run low, RSD is offering [...]

Filed under: Concerts and Tours , News , New Music , Exclusive On Halloween, just hours before Motion City Soundtrack played a sold-out hometown show in Minneapolis, frontman Justin Pierre was on his way to pick up a ghillie suit, camouflage gear worn by hunters. As the self-professed "34-year-old boy" goes rogue with his 'Dino Trail' tour of random solo acoustic dates, mostly dictated by fan requests via Twitter, the army greens seem appropriate. "We're not doing any hunting on this tour. It's strictly for recreational [...]
CMJ released the band schedule for its 2009 Music Marathon & Film Festival yesterday, which is about as good a sign of fall hitting New York as the return of apple cider at Greenmarket. The festival runs from Oct. 20 - Oct. 24 and includes various venues throughout the city, and the list of featured artists would probably take all four days to read through. But skimming the selection reveals a fairly equal distribution of well-known acts like Atlas Sound and Deer Tick , anonymous locals (including krautrock-y Jeff Buckley-channelers Pocketknife), twenty-two bands who [...]
The press release below doesn't actually list all the acts performing at CMJ this year, so you're probably better off checking out cmj.sched.org to get a true idea of what's happening during this year's marathon. Of course, sched.org is a little confusing too and it doesn't list unofficial events and day parties (as far as I know), so you'll have to wait a little bit longer for info to trickle out from the blogs and other unofficial sources. Lastly, even though the press release says the schedule is "final", you can pretty much bet that things will shift [...]

Let's think deeply upon the natural world… moss-laden trees, rotting deer corpses, white feathers floating in ponds, et al. This is what Cotton conjures up in her most recent album Red River. Like a field guide, she points out various flora and fauna, as she pleasingly croons along with her harmonious band. The track, "Hilltop Hymn," is appropriately titled, as Cotton sings pagan-like praises to the earth around her. After listening to Red River on a continuous loop, I get the urge to run away into the woods and, like, write Mary Oliver-esque poetry about rabbits or some shit. Thank [...]
In the Book Notes series, authors create and discuss a music playlist that relates in some way to their recently published book. Marie Mutsuki Mockett's novel Picking Bones from Ash tells the tale of three generations of Japanese woman in a voice so authentic and eloquent it is hard to believe this is Mockett's first novel. The Feminist Review wrote of the book: "If you've read Amy Tan's The Bonesetter's Daughter, it's easy to compare the two novels. Both feature complex and often painful relationships [...]

I've been a big fan of Automatic Children for the last few years and this is the second year now that they have made the Deli Magazine's list of top NYC bands. The band is playing tomorrow night at Cameo Gallery (which is inside the Lovin Cup Cafe on N. 6th Street) with Hunters, Run! . Automatic Children have a new 7" out - "Coming Over Me" and "Solitude" which is a limited edition pressing that comes with a digital download card (for those without a turntable). The band is [...]

Carey Mercer makes music as Frog Eyes , Swan Lake , and Blackout Beach . Here's a Blackout Beach song from the latest album, Skin of Evil . Blackout Beach - "Nineteen, One God, One Dull Star" I first heard Skin of Evil back in March on a long, long bus ride on bad roads in Laos. The country had been burning and there wasn't any wind, so the sky everywhere was smoky for a week. When this song came [...]

This is first and foremost a music blog. In fact, it is entirely a music blog. Only sometimes the odd globe-shattering story will break, making for just a short yet polite intrusion... I still don't think it's sunk in yet. Literally the whole planet has been banging on about it, but the thought that Cristiano Ronaldo will never play for my team, Manchester United, ever again seems so unreal. Even if it was always going to happen. Ever since he uttered the words, "In the future, you never know", to [...]

[Below is another tiny excerpt from my novel project - Wonderland . This post serves as a tribute to the modern, post-recession job hunt. For those job seekers out there, find a handy, middle school-esque career quiz at the end of the post. It's simple: Download each of the songs loosely based on an occupation. If you like the song, that means that you should pursue that career. Yes, it's that easy! Enjoy, and hang in there, job hunters.] Pen against [...]

David D "Hello Officer!" We all laughed when we saw Rick Ross in the cop uniform, clean shaven and smiling with old white women. We got a chuckle out of Algernod's squeaky clean past and the fact he's 32 years-old acting like a damn teenager. But this is too far. The Smoking Gun (please don't get them confused with us) accused Alfamega of being a government snitch . Of course, this has opened the [...]

Pacific Northwest radical environmentalist subsistence farming. Throat-shredding, tooth-chatt ering black metal. To most, these might seem two irreconcilable lifestyles. No so for Olympia, Washington's Wolves in the Throne Room . Self-describedly unifying "a Cascadian eco-spiritual awareness with the misanthropic Norwegian eruptions of the 90's" [ wittr.com ], WITTR furthers its uncomprimising vision with this year's Black Cascade . Ostensibly named in honor of the mountain range in which the band makes its home (yes, they do in fact live in a mountain), Black Cascade focuses on the latter half of the band's mission statement: this album is [...]
