by john ziegler Peephole , Brooklyn's own electro-pervs, debuted a new line-up last night at Southpaw, drubbing onlookers with their special blend of New Wave paranoia, electro-pop tension and glam attitude. Since forming the band 2 years ago, head peeper Kent Odessa has rearranged his personnel, including himself, switching from lead vocals only to now lead guitar as well. Behind him these days is Noah Pavlov on bass and backup vocals, Willie Mayo behind the drum kit, Kate Schweitzer [...]
It's been just one year since the release of Rolo Tomassi's impressive debut album Hysterics. Now we have word that the band have escaped to Los Angeles to record their second album with US producer Diplo. The story of the meet up goes like this: "When the band played at the SXSW event in Austin, Texas earlier this year, Rolo Tomassi were approached by Diplo, who was a fan and had been recommending them in interviews for Pitchfork, The Guardian etc.

In case you don't already know: Dan Deacon will take your idea of live music, light it on fire, and throw it out into the unexpected void beyond to fend for itself. Don't walk into the show expecting anything because most likely whatever you would have expected will just be utterly trampled and ripped to shreds by the end of the night. And I mean that in the best way possible- just be a willing captive. To make up for his cancellation at FYF Fest, Dan played the Center for the Arts in Eagle Rock last [...]
The new video for "I Can Be A Frog", a fable-esque collaboration between Flaming Lips and Karen O, is kinda like those Saturday Night Live skits that descend into crazy hysterics. There's a job at hand but no one can keep their shit together long enough to persevere and it ends up being funnier than the punchline anyway. Taken from their forthcoming LP Embryonic the track is a shopping list of objects/creatures embellished with Karen O animal noises and meandering sonics. The video meanwhile, has a bikini clad brunette striking animal poses like shame ain't no [...]

Let me be clear, I don't dance. I never could dance. I never will dance. I am the Sir Nose of dancing. (Put me down, let go my leg, etc.) Given this, it shouldn't be surprising for you to learn that I tend not to like "dance" music. (I put that word in quotation marks because one could dance to anything, even silence. Clearly, I'm referring to a particular genre of music. Don't be coy - you know exactly what I'm talking about. Stop being a contrarian.) However, when I do like [...]

Angora- The cold and the rain just made it a monumental suck-fest. However, I'm so tired of hearing people complain about it, let's move on and get to the great music then, yeah? Or at least the drinking part.... We start Monolith this time how we always start Monolith: hung-the-fuck-over. All the goodness and pre-parties and pre-party-after-parties are on Friday night. I spent the eve in Boulder, at a super secret sudden show starring These United States at George's (next to the Boulder Theater, which was host to the Happy Mondays and the Psychedelic Furs. Someone who broke [...]
Over the past year or more I've come to think of The Joy Formidable as 'The little band that could'. They popped up seemingly out of nowhere, blew us away with 'Austere', revived dreamy female-fronted guitar pop, and delivered one of the best albums of the year with A Balloon Called Moaning . It's cliche and far too easy, but it truly is the most joyful music you're likely to hear. Just take a listen to this new track they've offered for download, 'Greyhounds in the Slips'. It doesn't drift too far from their existing sound - [...]
Here's a comparison you won't hear too frequently. HEALTH are like a stand-up comedian. You know how you can buy their tapes and listen to their jokes at your own leisure. The laughs are still just as funny, yet you don't feel quite the same as your hysterics gain you yet another increasingly hostile look on the underground.

CASTLE Donington band Late Of The Pier 's debut album, Fantasy Black Channel , has picked up the Neptune Prize music award. The album was voted by readers of website Drowned In Sound as the best that didn't get a nomination for this year's Mercury Prize, won by Speech Debelle 's Speech Therapy . A spokesman said: "Congratulations gents, especially as you're one of the albums we assumed would make the Mercury list. "We'll be in touch about taking you out for a fish 'n' chip supper and [...]

You Need Satan More Than He Needs You If you read Future Of Left's myspace blog you'll discover that Andrew Falkous is a very complex individual who likes to express his thoughts in public. Unfortunately via email he wasn't as talkative, preferring to leave many topics in the past, including his anger towards the individual who leaked the band's latest album; constantly dealing with the Mclusky hangover and addressing crowd hecklers with a sarcastic kick in the teeth. With two [...]

Harlem / White Drugs / The Frustrations (Rubber Gloves): There's an interesting cover by Harlem on their page of the Royal Trux classic, "Junkie's Nurse." I call every song made before 2005 a classic now, because it really pissed someone off the other day. Anyways, it got me to thinking that the original was made by actual junkies, and that's why they decided to cover the whole thing with a weird, noisy, wash. Now even though that kid in the picture is wearing a junkie's pancho, I'm going to guess that these guys [...]
The Tussle in Towson! Last night, Ben Cardin held a townhall in Towson to try and discuss healthcare reform with people who are supposed to be his constituents. Here's how the local tv station WJZ reported it. Here's what The Baltimore Sun said: ...Cardin got heckled almost nonstop. The audience jeered his answers and broke into raucous cheers when their comrades confronted the senator with dismissive remarks about the federal government and the Obama administration's overhaul plan. [...]
One day it might make a great movie (a sort of Network 2 ) - how FOX News was able to out-maneuver MSNBC and destroy the seed of an almost actual liberal media before it took root. But given the nature of the story, it's highly unlikely such a movie would air on NBC or FOX. Well, maybe on FOX. After years of feuding between MSNBC's Keith Olbermann of FOX's Bill O'Reilly, the heads of both networks sat down and arranged a deal, brokered by Charlie "CBS News and ABC News and NBC [...]
Of Montreal & Janelle Monae @ MHOW ( more by Tim Griffin ) Of Montreal just had an exciting weekend. Jon Brion (who t hey have collaborated with ) opened for them at the Fox Theatre in Oakland on Friday (7/24). Then they (and Dengue Fever) opened for Grace Jones at Hollywood Bowl on Sunday (7/26)... " Kevin Barnes , the Georges Bataille-reading, polyamorous frontman, turned in a focused performance with an occasional feisty edge. Though the Athens, Ga., band is a keen, aesthetic fit [...]
When Taking Back Sunday take to the stage the Academy erupts and the front row, composed entirely of young teenage girls, scream and quiver in unison. However it is only when singer Adam Lazzara appears that things get a little bit too hectic for comfort; he smiles broadly at that front row as he saunters onstage, tossing his long, wavy hair to the side, sending those in his field of vision into hysterics. One particular girl finds the occasion too much and bursts into tears before seemingly collapsing. The reaction is perhaps not surprising given the average age [...]

It took its sweet ass time, but finally, oh so finally, Delorean's (previous posts here , here and here ... Yeah, I kinda like them, hey) stonking new Ayrton Senna EP has dropped on Fluo Kids' excellent Fool House imprint. The name, as much as anything, seems like a bit of a nod of the head to the retro-fired sci-funk Delorean of old, which always played a little like the soundtrack to some sort of Michael J. Fox inspired Delorean cross-country racing film. In which everyone was racing along [...]

The last year has been interesting for British music. There has been so many great albums that past under the radar of the public and were seemingly ignored by the media whereas there has been tons of bland, boring and uninspiring releases that have been lauded, praised, hyped and bought by the public, who I sometimes think don't like music at all. I've been asked by the BBC, as have many music blogs/sites, who I would nominate for this year's Mercury Music Prize . Now, I never really agree with the winner, or [...]
NEW LISSY TRULLIE REMIX Our favorite NYC garage-rocker extraordinaire Lissy Trullie has been busy traversing these United States over the past summer, burning rubber and breaking hearts up and down our interstates, and it would seem that now that she's cozied back up in her big city apartment she can finally begin cranking out new material as she said she would in our exclusive interview . No sooner said than done as LT and crew have recently had their hit single "Boy Boy" remixed by Blunt Laser [...]

In his radio diary this week, Joseph O'Connor recalls a trip to Disneyland in the company of a group of Irish football fans... If you're not sure why the football fans are in hysterics at Disneyland, you can have a look here and maybe here .
