Sophisticated DeShannon albums from '68 and '70 Jackie DeShannon is a singer-songwriter who songs' generally overshadowed her own singing. Her version of Burt Bacharach and Hal David's "What the World Needs Now is Love" etched her name on the upper reaches of the charts in 1965, and her own "Put a Little Love in Your Heart" notched a second commercial favorite in 1969. But other than these two worldwide hits, her albums and singles typically languished in the lower regions of the U.S. pop charts. Her albums for Imperial ranged from early teen-oriented pop [...]
![Mock Orange - Captain Love - Tigertrap Records [Album Review]](http://cache.elbo.ws/posts/2087772_lg.jpg)
Hearing Captain Love made me want to HUP-two-three-four, stand at attention and snap a million salutes because it's so rare for me to take such pleasure from a rock album with pop persuasions. Mock Orange present a rare batch of influences before the listener and DARE him/her to deal with it, up to and including: A resemblance, in both the lead and back-up vocals, to How it Feels / Rising [...]
Alt-metal giants Faith No More recently reunited after an 11-year silence for a comeback jaunt . The appropriately titled Second Coming tour, which has been going on for the last four months, has taken them to almost every corner of the world. Notably absent? North American dates. The closest they were to get to the United States was Mexico, where they're scheduled to play three dates in mid-November. That is about to change. Today bassist Billy Gould released this statement to his Twitter account: "Tweet THIS: In response to all of our concerned US brethren...YES...we are now actively planning [...]
This is an ever changing and (hopefully) expanding list of some of the songs I have mentioned before in this blog or simply stuff I have found somewhere on the web that I find interesting, but have no time to write about. All files have been found somewhere in cyberspace (and NONE of them have uploaded by me, so I cannot help you with any requests you might have - just keep returning and something new might pop up), so they will be available until the artists, record labels, fans, whatever decide to remove them. Thanks to a few readers, [...]

Better known as Elvis Costello. I've been on a bit of an Elvis kick lately. Maybe it has something to do with having bought Cruel Smile the day I interviewed for the job I'm at now. Yeah, it may not be his best album, but with Elvis, even his worst (which this one isn't) is still pretty damn good. Anyway, I finally started taking the time to sort through all the non-album stuff I've collected over the years, and figure [...]

John Hughes, the creator of so many iconic 80's movies has died of a heart attack . I wonder how many people my age saw his movies and identified with the characters, particularly if you didn't fit into one niche. He had an imperial run in the mid eighties, when he wrote or directed some of the very best teen stories. My favorite is Pretty In Pink , but I also love Breakfast Club and, to a lesser degree, Sixteen Candles . Ferris Bueller [...]

Hope you're not getting tired of these, I still enjoy making them. This is Number Nine in the Sound Bites Summer Fridays series, designed specifically to eliviate seasonal stress and alergies. This week's edition features fake reggae, real reggae, fake Thin Lizzy, French pop, goth pop, Swedish pop, an appearance from the Elephant Six roster, various aural ephemera and new tracks from BOAT, The Xx, Champagne Socialists and Cornershop. That's exciting, isn't it? Cover art this week was done by me, mainly because I forgot to get back to the people who've actually offered make one. (Will get back to [...]

As I'm sure you've read on the TYS Twitter, PJ is in the midst of moving right now. So I'm here to pick up on his (and my own...mostly my own) slack. I've spent the week going through '09 releases that I've picked up since I'm reading everyone's lists from half way through the year to get a better grasp on what would make my own list. I've made a few discoveries, weathered a few disappointments, but one album that has grabbed my attention since soon after its April 1st release and then kept it was Impossible Hair 's [...]

When we were in New Orleans two weekends ago for my step-daughter's graduation from Loyola (we're proud - and relieved!), my wife and I got a chance to go out that Saturday night and catch a tribute to saxophonist Alvin 'Red' Tyler , a free event at the Contemporary Arts Center put on by the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Foundation . Red, who passed away in 1998, was a talented, dependable constant on the local R&B and jazz scenes in town for some 50 [...]

The story of Terry Tolkin's record label, No. 6 Records, has been somewhat lost amidst the nostalgic hosannas for mid- to late-90s indie rock. A new compilation of No. 6's 7-inch output, titled Speed Dating [Teenbeat], will hopefully change all that. Speed Dating has the feel of a great lost mix tape. If you think about it, a 7-inch is basically a band's thesis statement. Speed Dating captures that headlong rush of great pop ideas —the fizz and pop— many times over. Stylistically restless but aesthetically consistent, [...]
She & Him. The Clientele. Lambchop. Imperial Teen. Versus. Lou Barlow. Portastatic. [...]
If outside-today is anything like outside-yesterday - and the league of upper-atmosphere prognostication planted a message in my cherry (flavored) Pop Tart which implied that this just might be - then you best drop all concerns about the economy and global health oinkage and the rapidly deteriorating situation in nuclear-armed Pakistan. The only thing you need worry about for the next ten hours or so is what height-of-Spring music should come blaring out the windows of your office/home office/car/cardboard box. Worry no more! The forward-thinking Goldilocks Study conducted at Northwestern University's Center for Awesomeness and [...]
![The Rentals Return With A Preponderance Of Content [Listening Station]](http://cache.elbo.ws/posts/1663678_lg.jpg)
When Matt Sharp started his cutesy little Weezer side project (ahem, excuse me: musical collective ), The Rentals , back in 1994, I thought, "That's nice. They've given the bassist his own little band to play with." I said that in a baby talk voice. Now I look back fondly on the reliable pop charms of the Rentals, having watched Rivers Cuomo spend the last decade dismantling any goodwill I ever felt for Weezer. Did y'all listen to "Heart Songs"? That song alone has made me question [...]

Many of you who follow Pasta Primavera may have wondered, "Yo Pasta! Where's your artist reviews/suggested listening posts? Those are the part of your site that I love the most!" Well that's the part of the site that take the most time to develop and create and lately I've been short on time. Why? Well this past Sunday (Easter) my wife gave birth to a new baby boy!! It's the most amazing and beautiful thing that has ever happened to me. Really. I'm looking at him right now - I'm in awe. So as you can imagine between [...]

Yall, I was searching Amazon.com for snuff films, and then I saw that People who Bought Snuff Films Also Purchased a lot of relevant indie albums. I think that Amazon.com put together this list as a promotion since a lot of people who listen to modern indie music just get their albums from rapidshare instead of amazon.com these days. Think that they are trying 2 sell more albums/mp3s to people who 'shop at amazon' but still haven't discovered that u can build a fulfilling online musical existence by visiting 3-7 sites on a monthly basis without spending much [...]

Amazon just released their 100 greatest Indie albums of all time and it's a real mixed bag. We generally shy away from numbering lists here at WUASTM , but find other reviewer's lists fascinating stuff, although sometimes you have to wonder at their choices. For instance, choosing the Pixies Surfer Rosa [...]
