Comedy and music are wonderful bedfellows – witness the zany, seminal humour of Monty Python's songs or the off-the-wall ditties sung on The Mighty Boosh – and Flight of the Conchords are just the latest in a long line of comedic groups to dabble in music. After working together for more than a decade, Kiwis Bret Mackenzie and Jemaine Clement have become seriously hot property in the comedy world, thanks to their HBO series The Flight of the Conchords, and key to their success is that they're not just able to trade witty repartees, but they're adept at [...]

Pop piano diva Alicia Keys is wisely steering clear of cluttered release dates November 17 (Kris Allen, Leona Lewis, John Mayer, Katy Perry) and November 24 (Adam Lambert, Rihanna, Shakira, Lady GaGa) for new album The Element Of Freedom . Instead, she'll go toe-to-toe with Lil Wayne's Rebirth on December 15. And while the whole freedom angle with the cover art is pretty evident—Doves in flight! The sky's the limit!— is Alicia also borrowing from Whitney Houston's "Queen Of The Night"/ Bodyguard schtick, albeit through a shimmery GaGa-ized lens? [...]

They took us somewhere else! Literally and imaginatively, made us see things that were not in front of us but which we could reach in our futures if we dared grasp all the implications and inspirations of their music. As both men and musicians, Miles and Trane encouraged us to commit ourselves to newness, to move away from the old in order to get to previously unknown modes of existence. For we humans, re-newing ourselves is generally not the easiest motion to make. But this force and brutal beauty pushed way beyond the ordinary. [...]

Still going strong two weeks into our programming on, the great, Indie-Verse radio and we've got another nice lineup of tunes. We've got the local scene covered with some tracks from Fergus & Geronimo and The Uptown Bums. Also, my new collective friends from Oxford, MS, Cats Purring , have their fair share of play time. Listen to the show today at 1 PM CST and again on Saturday at the same time. We'll be in Denton (at Rubber Gloves) tonight for our show with Crystal Antlers, Video and Uptown Bums. Come say hi. Head here [...]
In the middle of her solo performance at The Mill in Iowa City Thursday night, Pieta said to the small crowd, "It's like I'm playing to you in my living room!" Pieta was referring to the small crowd on Thursday night, but the stage was adorned with a chair and nightstand as well as lamps and an old dress form giving the stage a homey touch with lighting designed by Stan Crocker , who has done a lot of lighting design for TV shows like CMT's Crossroads. Last night was the first night of a three-week artist-in-residency [...]
We Plants Are Happy Plants - Sell Your Soul is currently on rotation in MTV I am overwhelmed with the good music that is coming out of Hungary and sent to us by Ektiv! I am booking a flight to Budapest, Hungary right now! Not really, but I wish! Anyways, We Plants Are Happy Plants is no stranger and there has already been some great hits released by them, but in case you were one of the unfortunate ones who missed them we've posted a recap on their remix of NightWaves - 'Fascination' as well as a download [...]

If you've been keeping up with my Twitter feed , you may have noticed that I've been incredibly busy as of late. I just can't seem to catch a break with finding time to blog now that I currently work two jobs. Of course, those who have been keeping up have come to expect lengthy periods of inactiveness, at least on my part. Mentioning any kind of worthwhile albums from the past three weeks is just a meaningless task, as you can just take a peek below to see the excellent amount of releases at [...]

November 2009 marks our first official Raised on Indie International Track of the Month feature. We started accepting submissions 3 months ago and have selected our first three entries taking us into the new year. Our first entry selection is an artist from Tulsa Oklahoma named Van Risseghem. Van Risseghem , aka 21 year old Tulsa native Jonathan Van Risseghem, sings on his full length album release The Motions. Within 6 months of releasing The Motions, Van Risseghem has been regularly played on a variety of Westwood One and Clear Channel radio stations across [...]

As previously announced , November brings a special "songwriter in residence" at The Mill in Iowa City by Pieta Brown called "This Land is Your Music : Pieta Brown & Friends" which is a series of three shows on November 5, 12, and 19 which is described as "celebrating Music, Land & Community." Each of the shows will center around Pieta's music with her playing in solo, duo (with Bo Ramsey) and in a full band configuration. In addition to her set, there will be an opening act and there will be an exhibit in the "back [...]
Sódóma in central-Reykjavik is a dirty brute of a bar. It should have sticky floors and sawdust to soak up the spilled blood; however, Icelanders are a fastidiously clean and tidy bunch so it's only just a bit dark and atmospheric, but despite these shortcomings, it was the most cacophonous place to be in the North Atlantic for the latest edition of the Iceland Airwaves festival. With less big-name international bands on the bill than previous festivals and a year that's seen riots and a pots-and-pans revolution in Iceland, the [...]

As we inundate you with new material, album reviews, concert information and the like, we rarely ever get the chance to show you what's been hot on our playlists lately. You hear a track during the picks of the week for our radio show but that doesn't exactly suffice, in my opinion. So I'll try to come up with more playlists, throughout our usual posting, of music I am liking, have liked, and am just plain listening to. Besides, everyone loves a good (yep, I can't go wrong) mix. Florence + The Machine - "Cosmic Love" [...]
This week may provide the greatest variety of music releases all year. From Sufjan Stevens' debut classical work, The BQE to Jay Farrar and Benjamin Gibbard's collaborative effort One Fast Move or I'm Gone: Music From Kerouac's Big Sur to Things About Comin' My Way - A Tribute to The Mississippi Sheiks , the week's release list is filled with variety. The week is deep in quality releases, from what I have already heard I can strongly recommend The Atlas [...]

We are rushing to the Denver airport from just outside of Trinidad, NM. Had planned to stop and see friends from the band the Human Value who have started a crepe shop in Colorado Springs, CO, but two things have made that impossible—one, the time zone change, which I was not aware of until the manager of our motel asked us to kindly check out b/c it was after 11 am (my fancy new blackberry told me it was 10:15) and the maid was waiting to finish up, and two, our flight back to Portland is an hour earlier [...]
