Margaret Dygas' position as an avant garde techno producer has been achieved with only three proper releases to her name but backed up by years of formidable DJ sets around the world. Born in Poland, she spent her formative teenage years growing up in America and now, like so many other dance music producers, lives in Berlin. Her exquisitely executed tracks have been released on Contexterrior, Non Standard Productions and Perlon , each showing a progression in her abilities and slowly revealing a distinctive type of sound. LWE hoped to learn much more about the budding artist [...]

In the Book Notes series, authors create and discuss a music playlist that relates in some way to their recently published book. Finch is the third book in Jeff VanderMeer's Ambergris Cycle, and also the third book in the series to inspire its own soundtrack (by Murder By Death ). With Finch , Jeff VanderMeer has created a richly populated world with speculative fiction imbibed with impressive detective noir storytelling. Paul Tremblay wrote of the book: "Told in a [...]

NOMO is an "Ann Arbor, MI based post-afrobeat dance explosion" - which is just what I needed to help get me through this dreary Seattle Monday. From the band's 2009 release Invisible Cities. NOMO - Invisible Cities NOMO -...
Nomo imagines every city skyline as a sound wave and, building on Ghost Rock , diffuses their Afrobeat-centeric sound in directions that could get any city's party pumping. Italo Calvino's 1972 novel Invisible Cities is a series of poetic travelogues posed as a conversation between Marco Polo and Kublai Khan. That NOMO has named their latest album after Calvino's work admits to a degree of cultural tourism on the band's part. This should be no surprise to those who've been following the various shapes and sizes of the Michigan-by-way-of-Africa group since their origins. Formed as a college band [...]

Goh Nakamura Explains the "Follow Your Whim" Tour and plays "Embarcadero Blues" After JetBlue announced that they'd be selling a $599 all-you-can-fly pass for the month of September, Goh Nakamura and The Invisible Cities had an idea equal parts clever and ridiculous. Goh and the Cities bought the passes and booked the "Follow Your Whim" tour around JetBlue-servicing cities, with upcoming stops in Los Angeles, Seattle, and New York city after a first week of shows in Houston, Austin and Southern California. [...]
Too busy with real life stuff at the mo, but been listening to music all day, this is just a quick recap of what kept me movin' and shakin' during the day. Stuff from Nomo 's Invisible Cities on Ubiquity , another one from last week's Carlos Lamartine album we featured , just can't get enough of it. Baden Powell 's Canto de Xangô version on solo guitar, a rare 12" from 70's Jamaica, The Light of Saba and the dub version of their most famous song, Lambs Bread Collie. Finally A Tribe called Quest [...]

If you don't know about Daytrotter (or haven't visited in a while) you should get yourself over to the Horseshack and check it out. What happens there is that bands and performers of all stripes stop in, drop a few live tracks down on Sean and the gang that they then roll those original performances back out one a day. And the lists of bands who have stopped in to do sessions over the last few years is simply damn impressive. Still, I am not sure that justifies the level of self-righteousness [...]

Over the past week, my brain has filled with goo rendering all hints of intelligence null and void. Many will argue that this is how I live my life--and that no one can tell the difference. Honestly, who am I to argue? I'm goo girl. Surprisingly, as I discovered on Saturday, said goo often sounds not unlike the sweet cacophony of Modest Mouse live. Interestingly enough, they did not play any of their singles that brought them to the sort of public attention that allows them to play a venue the size of the Grove of [...]

(this post originally appeared on Pop Candy last week, but I've decided to re-post it with artwork and mp3's! Hope you like!) So you think you have your favorite album of the year already picked, do you? Not so fast - we still have four months of fantastic records to go through. (Well, three, because no one really releases records in December.) In the coming months, I assure you there will be some fantastic records ... some from bands you already know, some from bands you should get to know, and quite possibly your [...]

King Khan and BBQ Show's long-awaited 3rd full-length album entitled, Invisible Girl , is set to be released on Los Angeles-based In The Red Records Mid-November. Dudes. This is going to be epic. This promises much more nipple than ever before. Mark Sultan, (bka BBQ) has said the new album "includes a song so vile that it cannot even be mentioned." The boys have been working with Black Lips as the Almighty Defenders, but come this fall you can catch them in their original incarnation in any of the following North American cities: 10.17.2009 Portland, OR @ [...]
