Islands from The Mary Onettes, one of Sweden's most promising exports, expands on the band's knack for combining nostalgic gloom with commanding hooks. Islands is a large record, chock full of sweeping synths, powerful, yet airy vocals, and shimmering guitar work. Children's choirs are employed with delicate finesse, while waves of reverb wash over the din for that extra dose of atmosphere. The album's epic sound is the result of a series of misfortunes that almost halted the production of the album, including stolen computers and hard drive malfunctions. These mishaps forced the band to start from [...]

The summer of 2003 was a hot one in eastern Washington, and my concrete bunker of an apartment contained the heat like no other. Granted, the above image wasn't shot by yours truly until 2004, but it sure seemed hot enough to ignite even the least combustible of items. I wrapped up my undergraduate that December, which was cold as Antarctica, and upon that milestone I moved to Seattle. It was a good year for the Northwest; many of my favorite albums came from Seattle labels like Sub Pop and Barsuk. As for the list, I've [...]

Uhmemba the Cops ? That frenzied, Clash-loving, back-alley punk band? They disbanded at the end of last year . I wept (internally). Not one to sit on his laurels, scrappy guitarist/vocalist Mike Jaworski -who also owns and operates local label Mt. Fuji Records -has created a new band: Virgin Islands . It's a lot like the Cops, but even dirtier and more frenzied. Jagged, even. Whoa and double-whoa . The new EP is called The Age of Anxiety [...]

We all believe things come and go in cycles and if anyone is complaining about The Mary Onettes sounding too 80s, they shoud really search their souls. Swedes have a knack of tugging at our heart strings in recent years and its no different this time with The Mary Onettes. Being under Labrador Records mean their label mates include The Legends , Sound Of Arrows & The Radio Dept. Wonderful company. In all brutal honesty, they have not exactly changed much after their [...]
I've got another song for everyone today from the Montreal-based indie-rock/pop band Islands . Switched On can be found as the opening track to the band's 3rd full-length album Vapours , released on September 22nd of this year. In an interview with Pitchfork over the summer, Islands' front-man Nicholas Thorburn (Nick Diamonds) described his mindset during the making of the album as "I needed to withdraw from overblown metaphors and filling every possible sonic space. So this record is just made up of sequenced programming, synths, drum machines, guitars, and real bass. [...]
Not too long ago, LWMB contributor Frank Deserto shared with y'all a video and free mp3 from Sweden's The Mary Onettes . Well, we recently caught up with the band on their whirlwind trip to New York City, where they played four shows in five days. They spoke to us about the pitfalls they experienced in recording their most recent album, Islands (out now on Labrador ), all the attention being paid to Swedish artists in America lately, how they chose their name, and the sonic concepts behind their unique [...]

Hailing from New Jersey and currently residing in Seattle, Rachel Flotard has been piloting Visqueen for years while singing with Neko Case. When her father took ill, she put her career on hold in order to spend time with him as he battled prostate cancer. Losing her dad led Flotard to take deeper stock of her life and career. She formed her own indie label, Local 638 Records, and released the power-pop gem Message to Garcia to rave reviews. In this EXCLUSIVE interview, Rachel Flotard recalls the evolution of her new album and some of her [...]

Tabou Combo New York City Sometimes in the winter, when I'm in a cab, the heat turned up too high, my feet cold and the zouk carrying on through the stereo with its non-stop bass & vibe loop with occasional midi instrument vamp overtop, I close my eyes and re-live, through the power of memory & my own will, the magic of Weekend at Bernies II , which I first experienced during its theatrical release at the Rio Theatre in Vanderhoof, British Columbia [...]

While I'm still waiting on your turkeys to pick up some albums in this month's bargain basement...here's a quick list for the only real album of note this week. (yeah sorry...not a John Mayer fan). This month there's some great albums available in the bargain bin: Anvil, RX Bandits' Mandala, Owl City, Jay-Z Blueprint 3, The 59 Sound, Daft Punk, Edward Sharpe, Islands Vapours, Antlers' Hospice,

Don't forget to rate the album at the end of the post. Welcome back to Blinded By The Hype, the PMA feature in which we revisit albums once the hype has died down. In today's world, music is released at a machine gun pace. It's a what-have-you-done-for-me-late ly type scene, and "lately" usually means this week. Rarely do we stop to smell the roses. Even good albums get overlooked as time passes. And we almost never – aside from year end lists – take a look backward. Hindsight is 20-20, and we'd like to apply that retrovision [...]
After three years delivering strange art-pop to the underground scene, Future Islands have now officially signed to independent label Thrill Jockey and are ready to take their musings that one step further. Their début Wave Like Home was released back in 2008 and just two years later, the trio are gearing p to drop album number two on their new Thrill Jockey imprint.

On your side of the Atlantic, it was Steve Lamacq I believe who first tipped the xx as one of the bands to make waves in 2009. On this side, Pitchfork sang the praises of the band's debut album in late summer, practically ensuring that hype would be following the band around wherever they went. So it follows that the news that the xx's fourth member Baria Qureshi caused the band to cancel some European dates and subsequently decided to leave the band permanently would make headlines. [...]

The Fiery Furnaces have a new album called Take Me Round Again that was released digitally only on November 5th. In theory, Take Me Round Again is a collection of cover, but it is also a collection of alternate takes of previously released songs. In other words, it features the members of the Fiery Furnaces re-writing each other's work. As Eleanor (who accounts for 1/2 of the Fiery Furnaces) put it: "I've gotten into the habit of rewriting songs Matt has written, just as a way of practicing and singing at home. Originally, I had [...]
Ukulele has long been an underappreciated instrument in contemporary music. Sprouting from the Hawaiian Islands, ukulele is finding it's way into modern music, and is making a great contribution. New York City based mutli-instrumentalist Casey Chandler known as "Galapaghost" plays an amazing new blend of ukel-indie rock, with ukulele talent that could impress Israel Kamakawiwo'ole. Using such a
