Here, for no apparent reason, is a collection of bands named after places. Architecture in Helsinki I never knew the city was renowned for its flair for buildings. I guess it's catchier than Architecture in Slough. Beirut A New Mexican who named his group after a Lebanese city and plays eastern European, French and Mexican-influenced folk. Somebody has identity issues. [...]

We mentioned David Lynch in relation to the video for " Permanent Scar "," the lead track from the self-titled debut by O+S because the duo of Orenda Fink and Scalpelist (aka Cedric LeMoyne of Remy Zero) namechecks the man's spirit in relation to their music. Also because it's true. After that, we saw Fink enter a glittery fairyland during her vocal turn for Japancakes' " Behind The Mountains ." In the more straightforward " We Do What We Want To " clip, the warping images of the players are ghostly, yes, but the patchwork of samples and Fink's vocal [...]

Add Japancakes to the list of instrumental bands trying their hand, and successfully at that, at incorporating vocals into their music during the month of July. Yes, Japancakes join The Octopus Project as such, featuring Orenda Fink on vocals in their epic track "Behind The Mountains". The video features seven women fronted by Orenda Fink herself, all decorated in sparkles and colors. The effect, backed by Japancakes signature southern-sounding shoegaze, is actually a bit eerie. But boy is it good! "Behind The Mountains" was directed [...]

Feeling artsy? Then you might want to check out the video for the track "Behind The Mountain" by instrumental band Japancakes . As far as the video goes, I found the makeup and the background music to be more interesting than the Enya-esque vocals from Orenda Fink of Azure Ray (which makes sense, because they're an instrumental band?), but hey, it looks cool, and they've got a cool name, so I'm on board. [...]

Every week we team up with our friends at Hypeful (although they haven't been participating much lately) to bring you the week's best new album releases. The big name albums are noticably missing from this week for the most part, but that doesn't mean there isn't some great music out there. Check out the new releases, album art, mp3's and streams after the jump... [...]
Instrumental no more. Japancakes, the vocal-less band from Athens, Ga., has—a mere 13 years into its career—recorded a song featuring singing. Actually, there's two different versions of "Behind The Mountains," one in English (sung by Azure Ray's Orenda Fink) and one in Mandarin (sung by Miss Stocking's Moon). A third take is instrumental; old habits [...]
Japancakes "Behind the Mountains" is their first ever song to utilize voclas! While the band has mentioned the idea of introducing vocals to their music through the years, it has never quite happened… until now. From Athens, Atlanta, Los Angeles, and Taiwan, Japancakes have put together three versions of their single "Behind The Mountains." With the comforting airy vocals from Orenda Fink (Azure Ray) on the English version, accompanying Japancakes soundtrack style, some beautiful and simplistic visuals are drawn. These visuals come to life in the first ever video from Japancakes, directed by Ryan Berg. Stunning and simple, this [...]
Dietro [...]

Most people I know, including myself, learned about Athens, Georgia natives Japancakes from their exceptional instrumental album covering My Bloody Valentine 's Loveless . While many bands attempt to mimic the shoegaze legends with effect pedals, layers of noise and buried vocals, Japancakes offered a different take on the groundbreaking disc by recording with string arrangements, pedal steel and zero vocals. The harmonies shoot forth with crystal clear notes and warped tones created by humans not electronic gadgets, and the result is [...]
Track: Behind The Mountains Artist/Band: Japancakes (related) Label: Sleepy Strange Description: New Japancakes Feat. Orenda Fink Video for "Behind The Mountains," which is the first song the famously instrumental-oriented band has released with actual vocals. Directed by Ryan Berg. (Want more music videos? I like pancakes. I think I like Japan. For these two reasons, I was mildly intrigued to hear about a band called Japancakes and the release of their first song to contain vocals. This is all the more astounding when you consider the fact that the group has been active for the last decade. I seem to have a thing for bands with silly names and ambient, down tempo soundscapes. So, naturally, I'm hooked. The video for "Behind the Mountain's," their aforementioned foray into singing, features some kickass face paint and ribbons that [...]

We last saw Orenda Fink in the Lynchian, dreamily menacing video for " Permanent Scar ," the lead track from the self-titled debut by O+S, her project with Scalpelist (aka Cedric LeMoyne of Remy Zero). Taking part in another collaboration, "Behind The Mountains" features her guest vocal turn with longstanding Athens instrumentalists Japancakes. It comes complete with Japancakes first ever video, an ethereal trek into some glittery, ribboned fairy realm created by director Ryan Berg. Visually Orenda's joined by Whitney Able, Kelly Boehmer, Shannon Malone, Elizabeth Hendrix, Laura Slade, and Kinsey Packard, but she's the only one actually singing. [...]

I remembered to bring my computer home from work this week, so I can actually post the mix tape I intended to post last week. It's always fun looking through my record collection and hard drive for weird covers, so hopefully you won't be disappointed by the selection this week. One or two of these might have been posted before (I know for a fact Seaweed covering Jonathan Richman was shared on the Sub Pop Peel Sessions post), but most of these should be baby-spankin' new. Calexico covers Nick Drake, then Nick Drake turns around and covers...ugh...Bob Dylan. [...]

• That image is no joke, young traveler, that's part of a New York Times article about places with funny names in the United Kingdom. Is this what we can expect now from one of the most respected American newspapers now that there is a liberal in the White House? There isn't anybody in the government to complain about anymore, so I guess we're just going to see more journalists tackling issues like "Is it pronounced PENIS-town or PENNIS-ton?" All over the world, people with half-a-brain are holding their heads in shame. Way to go, New York Times, way to [...]
