Finn Riggins ditched the big yellow bus, but it's not about to ditch its home state of Idaho. [SPAZZ POP] Finn Riggins loves life on the road. In fact, the Idaho spazz-pop trio is so committed to touring, it spent a staggering 245 days away from home last year. For many of the shows, it rolled up to bars and house venues on some interesting wheels: an old yellow school bus. "It would get so cold, 'cause there was virtually no heating," drummer Cameron Bouiss says of the band's first [...]

A little over a month ago I was asked to participate in an Albums Of The Decade Blog Tour , where 10 bloggers will choose their favorite albums of the decade. Music has always been a big part of life, but this decade I have been more tuned then ever and the benefits have been countless. To narrow a list down to 20 or even 25 was challenging but I think I have captured the essence of my listening habits. Like I said this part of a blog tour and I am grabbing the torch from Dryve Tyme [...]

This is, sadly, the final tour diary from our buds Church. Thanks again for contributing guys, and next time you head out on tour we'll be waiting. -Ed. Friday, October 9th: Santa Cruz Food! We watched some barking food underneath the dock. That's Little Hot Dog in the blue sweater. So little and hot-dog like. [...]
Finn Riggin's stellar new album, Vs. Wilderness, released yesterday. To celebrate, please watch this amazing video for "Wake" which was made by Jason Sievers. His lovely stop motion animation videos and have been featured on Pitchfork.com and MTV and he's worked for bands like Built to Spill, The Universal and The Wrens to name a few. The album was recorded, engineered and co-produced in May of 2009 by the band at AudioLab studio, an arm of Garden City, Idaho's Visual Arts Collective (or VAC, a non-profit gallery, venue, theatre and creative space with which Finn Riggins [...]

Idaho band Finn Riggins returns to their Portland home away from home for a release show at Berbati's tonight for their new Vs. Wilderness . In case you missed it, we recently featured the band here , and also recorded an in-studio session with them back in the spring of 2008. Jared Mees & the Grown Children, World's Greatest Ghosts and Typhoon are also part of the bill. Also on stages tonight, a release show for The Stolen Sweets ' new Chinatown-inspired effort and and an intriguing pair of Canadian acts [...]
About one month ago, just days before the craziness of Musicfest NW, I had the pleasure of meeting and chatting with Finn Riggins, a pop trio from Idaho and maybe the nicest group of musicians I've ever met. Over the course of an hour, we talked about a lot of things besides music: community, small towns, life on the road. Even though the band resides in Idaho—guitarist Lisa Simpson and keyboardist Eric Gilbert just moved to Boise, and drummer Cameron Bouiss in the tiny town of Hailey—they consider Portland as a home away from home. Their new album, Vs. [...]

Sunday, September 27th – Pocatello, ID We tried to make it on time to Bellevue to play the Finn Riggins BBQ, but we were a bit too late. We needed to make it to Pocatello by 9, so we hauled ass through Idaho. Thanks again Finn Riggins! Running late, but we couldn't resist a stop at CRATERS OF THE MOON… Black rocks, black sand, volcanic eruption debris as far as the eyes can see. [...]

I first saw Finn Riggins live at Slabtown, a small venue and I knew nothing of them. They stunned me. I got their album A SOLDIER, A SAINT, AN OCEAN EXPLORER and it won my vote for best of 2008. To the burnt-out music cynic (not me!) who asked when, if ever, I was actually "blown away" by an act, I now had an instant response. As I reported then: - "Finn Riggins. The peak. They shocked and stunned: Truly amazing, like a locomotive storming into a barn... in years to come this could be the [...]

We are super-stoked to have one of our favorite Portland bands, Church, keeping a tour diary. Huzzah! Wed September 23rd – Olympia, Wa – The Northern First day of the tour starts off well at The Northern, a new all-ages showspace in Olympia. This place is rad and efficient – all volunteer run, good sound, nice people! We were joined by our local favorites Ocean Age, who played a superb set full of soothing harmonies. Next, the Christopher Francis Trio sort of melted our faces off with an Iggy Pop meets [...]

Today's diaries come from (in no particular order) AP "Chinatown" Kryza, David "I'm such an asshole" Robinson, Mark "Eagle Eye" Stock (MS), Matthew "Laker Fan" Singer (MSR), Justin "Kickenbaque" Kent (videos), Jenny "British Intern" Booth, Michael "What Year is it?" Mannheimer, Matthew "Carnage" Korfhage and Casey "Opposite of Fair" Jarman. It's been a helluva long weekend. Hope you had as much fun (and drank less) than we did. -Ed. SATURDAY 8:30 am @ Home Just realized I had a tuna sandwich [...]

and on Friday night, the cavalcade of great music kept rolling: I saw Tara Jane O'Neil do a very fine set at Back Space then popped next door to hear Jared Mees and The Grown Children. Exceptionally entertaining. Wish I could have stayed. But I had to take the bus across the river to see Explode into Colors. And then Pink Mountaintops. And then to a late-night party at 17th NW and Overton where The Thermals played a special set and Dj Safi played my favorite song about sandwiches. Way fun. [...]

What more can we say? Who needs much of an intro when you've got 5,000 words on day 3 of MFNW, complete with Sunny Day Real Estate, Bad Brains, the LC showcase and drunken antics at the afterparty. Contributors include Mark Stock, Matthew Singer, Jenny Booth, Aaron Mesh, Kelly Clarke, AP Kryza, David Robinson, Devan Cook, Matthew Korfhage and Rebecca Raber. Michael and Casey both tweated the night away, and those will be added later. 3:35 pm @ Work Realizing now that determining who to see on tonight's bill is [...]

Tour Diary Day 2 August 26th Following the Olympia show we drove to Seattle, where my old friend Matt was gracious enough to board us for the evening, as well as book a show for the dudes with two of his bands. Matt is the tightest dude ever and if you see him you should give him 5 dollars or maybe some red vines. Thomas, Nelson and I began the day with some structured calisthenics at a local skate park. I'm not sure how many people know this, but Thomas Himes, in [...]

Editor's Note: We're very excited to have Congratulations and the Old Believers on board for some tour diary action. The man responsible is Tom Hanks, who plays in both groups—and yes, his name is really Tom Hanks so don't give him a hard time about it. We've got a small crack in the site right now, but eventually his name'll be plastered all over these diaries. Thanks! Tour Diary Entry 1 August 25th, 2009 The Old Belations/ Congratulievers tour w/ the Red River The Brave Records western states [...]

Western states, particularly those in the Pacific Northwest, are often neglected by touring bands, but Idaho-based Finn Riggins is performing enough dates in their home region this fall to more than make up for it. The group's album Vs. Wilderness is due out October 13th on Tender Loving Emprire and they'll be closing out their two-month tour in support of it with a string of dates in support of fellow Idahoans Built to Spill. Listen " Wake (Keep This Town Alive " (New Song Daily) [...]

...touring over 200 days a year, any band is likely to improve dramatically. If that band should also spend their down time holed up in a remote cabin in the woods, that ratio increases exponentially. In the case of Hailey, Idaho trio Finn Riggins , these intense periods of proximity resulted in a live set that garnered them some opening spots on the upcoming fall tour from fellow Idahoans, Built to Spill . Finn Riggins heads back out in advance of that stint on their own in support of their 4th album, vs. Wilderness [out October [...]

So the video is a little shaky, and we usually only run this feature on Tuesdays, but come on: how could I resist posting a video of a handful of Portland musicians pouring their hearts into a cover of "We are the World?" Taken from the epic "Portland Cello Project: Extreme Dance Party Edition" set last Saturday at the Doug Fir, this version of the Michael Jackson and Lionel Ritchie penned cheeseball classic sees Jared Mees, Adam Shearer, Jack Saturn, John Brophy and like 15 other musicians putting on their best Serious Singer Faces for some drunken karaoke. [...]
