One of my personal most anticipated release of the upcoming new year is definitely Spoon 's " Transference ". We've talked a bit about the new Spoon record in the past, more exactly about the few Transference tracks that have already been played live on the band's last tour. It now seems people will get the chance to have a first hand account of the new Spoon sooner than one may think, as in the following months the band will be touring through out the U.S. and Europe in support of Transference, which, by the way, will [...]

Spoon has a new album coming out soon ( Transference ) and they've already started plotting out a path to support it. Here are the first tour dates of the tour and if you don't see your city on the list I'm sure you'll get hit on the second announce. No band only plays 11 dates to support an album. Spoon: 12-03 Kansas City, MO - Midland Theatre 12-04 Boston, MA - Orpheum Theatre # 12-11 Portland, OR - Crystal Ballroom * 12-12 La [...]

Let me be the first to wish all of our readers a very merry Thanksgiving holiday. While you're stuffing your gullet with turkey and dressing, we'll be here all holiday long providing you with the latest Chicago music news and reviews. Also, beginning in December, we'll start our best of the decade/best of the 2009 lists. So that'll be fun. This weekend, we're spotlighting tonight's Pixies' show, Peaches and Permanent Records Third Anniversary Bash at The Hideout. But before we get to our picks for top weekend shows, a reminder: [...]

Hitting the U.S. and Europe in coming months Spoon's next album, Transference, is due January 25 in Europe via Anti- and January 26 in North America via Merge. And in the coming months, lucky folks in the U.S. and Europe will get a chance to hear Spoon play some of these songs live. Spoon's catalog of spiky new wave jams is already pretty huge, and they've always been totally smooth and on-point onstage, so you're pretty much guaranteed a good night out if you hit up one of these shows. All dates are below. [...]

Photo: Autumn DeWilde Have you seen Spoon live? They're crisp, like say, a delicious pastry. They are absolutely not one of those bands who anyone could ever accuse of "studio magic" because their sets beautifully recreate these little jams they have come close to perfecting over the last decade of making indie rock. Well, they're doing it all over again with Transference this January 26, and surrounding that release date with some live shows. One date is even with Jay Reatard, which is sort of like an experiment on what happens when organized sound [...]
When we last caught up with Mr. Reatard, his band had quit on him and he was not pleased about it. He since has already found a new backing band and so have bassist Stephen Pope and drummer Billy Hayes. It just happens that they joined Nathan Williams in Wavves. It turns... "I'm supposed to advertise myself, so any questions?" seems to be Wallis Bird's personal calling card for the evening. Most of the queries revolve around Wallis' phone number (087-4, apparently), but she's doing a solid job of advertising herself without the assorted between-song antics, producing a charismatic, bubbly singer-songwriter set that's a touch cheesy yet intriguing and fulfilling at the same time. No doubt Wallis picked up a few fans along the way, but right from the off there's no doubt who the sell-out Olympia crowd are wedged against the barriers for. [...]
Last month it was reported from Jay Reatard's twitter that his band quit on him, and he got mad and shared his thoughts on his Twitter. Turns out that the band has moved on and joined Wavves , as they played their first show together rocking out to some tunes. I know a lot of people don't love Wavves, so why join in with them? You'll just create more hate. (From what I see it as)

Wizzard Sleeve's "No Mongo" is one fantastic slab of something awesome. One could call it fuzz or scuzz or lo-fi or punk or psych and you'd be right. One could come up with clever metaphors like "Early Jay Reatard soaked in robo," or "Like Seattle Sludge meets The Smell," or "Like what music from Brooklyn would be sound like if it had any balls," and you'd be right. The Mobile, Alabama band pulls from varied underground movements and a wide swath of scenes and whips them into one wild, reverb heavy mix. One where there may be one overriding riff, [...]

Harry Patch, the longest surviving veteran of World War I, lived an honorable life, his very existence serving as a reminder to countless others of how far we've come, and at what cost, in matters of international conflict and discourse. And thanks to an initially subpar rocker beef that's blossomed into something going on classic, Harry Patch has also served as a reminder of the life of composer Harry Partch, and how far we've come in matters of incorporating his 43 tone scale into countless blog posts. To recap: Radiohead wrote a song for Harry Patch the Tommy, [...]
The Cave Singers ' sound has certainly developed since their successful 2007 debut album, Invitation Songs . Recorded in Vancouver, Welcome Joy , exhibits more variety than their original signature blend of Americana meets English folk. The alt-county nasal vocal and laid-back slide guitar picking are still there from the outset. The opening track, 'Summer Light', is comforting and familiar, but 'At The Cut' sees the Seattle trio unleash their inner rock child, and they certainly have fun in the process. However, they have not strayed too far from their roots – 'Leap' is [...]
You may remember reading about the Twitter-riffic dissolution of Jay Reatard's band a few weeks back or even about the time he asked the Cola Freaks to join him shortly after that. Though we heard whispers about this in a bar late last week but were quickly distracted by a beer, Pitchfork reported yesterday that Wavves' Nathan Williams has recently adopted a new backing band: bassist Stephen Pope and drummer Billy Hayes, formerly the rhythm section behind Reatard. Please note: these two are not to be confused with members of Reatard's earlier band The Reatards. [...]

MP3 : Jay Reatard - It Ain't Gonna Save Me MP3 : The Black Hollies - Gloomy Monday Morning MP3 : Bryan Scary and the ShreddingTears - (It's A) Gambler's Whirl Pels ikke bjørnen før den er skudt. Or, don't skin the bear before it's been shot. That seems to be exactly what Jay Reatard 's old band members tried to do when they walked out on him in October. (But then again, that's punk music, right?) Inconvenient timing (due to them being on [...]
Wavves frontman Nathan Williams hasn't had much better luck than Jay Reatard in holding on to a band. Williams took too many drugs and argued with his drummer onstage ; Jay Reatard pees on people . Apparently Jay Reatard's rhythm section would rather argue, since Pitchfork has confirmed that bassist Stephen Pope and drummer Billy Hayes have joined Wavves after leaving Reatard's band last month. A Pitchfork reader sent the website a YouTube video of Wavves performing with the new lineup, and they've since gotten official word from [...]

Album of the Quarter : A Sunny Day in Glasgow - Ashes Grammar Runners up: Memory Tapes - Seek Magic , Mount Eerie - Wind's Poem I am well aware that this podcast is a good month and a half removed from the end of 2009's third quarter, and that we are balls deep in the year's capping three-month span. But, perhaps the extra reflection has further winnowed the included tracks down from the fickle week to week whims of the blogosphere? Let's just pretend that that's [...]

A man from Memphis plods onto the Whelan's stage. Attached to his stout frame is a Gibson Flying-V guitar. Hailing from a city predominantly affiliated with the blues, he aims a plectrum at an instrument which has been adopted by purveyors of kitschy hair metal. The ensuing racket may well extract some of the despair of the blues as well as more than a few decibels of metal, but it is neither (nor, thankfully, a hybrid). Instead, Jimmy Lee Lindsey is a psychopathic popstar. He's Del Shannon with static and a sneer. He's Buddy Holly with a [...]

Molly Müeller caught them a couple of weeks ago, and CMJ buzz band , Surfer Blood , will be back in Denver for the second time in a month. As if you needed an excuse to see Japandroids (saw them earlier this year and the duo blew up the Hi-Dive stage), this addition should sweeten the deal. Below is their set from their P4K party recorded by NYCTAPER . Surfer Blood 2009-10-24 Market Hotel Brooklyn, NY USA Setlist: [Total Time 17:40] [...]
