Hollywood is not only a collective resting ground for many of Los Angeles' homeless, aspiring actors and setting for many an awesome tale from Bukowski, but also serves as a dream factory where myths, legends and icons are produced. Before our culture industry was outsourced to foreign environments like Japan and Taiwan, it was Hollywood which developed the impossible cool and made the great depression much less depressing...well, jazz deserves some credit as well. When you walk those sticky and filthy streets, remember the holy ground which once was. Holy Holy Hollywood [...]

I tempi cambiano, [...]

Don't start with me on the pic above . (Okay, Christian Bale is on GQ Magazine 's June Issue, check it out). On a more serious note, I may be pushing the envelope here. But really, this forthcoming months I'll be having the tightest schedule of all and seeing how things are going, a daily or (even weekly) post is out of the question. So I'm doing an advance Monthly Playlist of the best tracks for June. I've added a bunch of remixes and covers as well that I found oddly interesting. Just goes to show you should never [...]
![Mock Orange - Captain Love - Tigertrap Records [Album Review]](http://cache.elbo.ws/posts/2087772_lg.jpg)
Hearing Captain Love made me want to HUP-two-three-four, stand at attention and snap a million salutes because it's so rare for me to take such pleasure from a rock album with pop persuasions. Mock Orange present a rare batch of influences before the listener and DARE him/her to deal with it, up to and including: A resemblance, in both the lead and back-up vocals, to How it Feels / Rising [...]
This is a rare occasion when the announcement of a funeral is a good thing. It is a night when the event will represent a rebirth rather than death. On, Tuesday November 17th the Seattle Rock Orchestra is deconstructing The Arcade Fire' s iconic album "Funeral" and recomposing it in it's entirety to be performed by 50 piece orchestra at the Fremont Abbey. Not only is this a great opportunity for the chance to to dip into the classic side of Seattle's music talent pool, but "Funeral" [...]

Although grunge rock may have put Seattle on the music map back in the 90s, it was also, arguably, the birthplace of emo. Signed to Sub Pop Records, Sunny Day Real Estate was clearly influenced by their grunge label-mates—but their sound was something new. They took this distinctly Seattle sound and blended it with the post-hardcore, or emocore, vocals from the Washington D.C. scene. Sunny Day's unique "emo" style was not only well received, but has continued to influence a plethora of bands from Mineral to The Get Up Kids. They can even be linked to several of [...]

I was at the gym yesterday, watching the TV, and I learned that in 1900, a person's life expectancy was only 47 years. Let me tell you, people, that is young, very very young. Today it's up to 78, which is still young, actually, but when I saw that number 47, it hit me something hard. Back in the day, you were most likely to die from infection, childbirth or an accident. Today it's cancer, heart disease or dementia. I like to think that I'll just die peacefully of some natural cause, like [...]

One topic that often comes up when talking about music is what past band you wish you could have seen live. One of the bands I always bring up is Sunny Day Real Estate . After their debut was released in 1994 they toured less than a year before breaking up, and by all accounts they put on a hell of a live show. For some people, My Bloody Valentine , The Pixies , or the upcoming Pavement shows might be the end-all be-all of reunion tours, but for me I don't think anything will ever top seeing Jeremy Enigk, Dan Hoerner, Nate [...]

I had a nice little trip out to NY, saw family & friends, caught an improv show in the city (Magnet Theater....it was hilarious) and saw Paranormal Activity (It did what it was supposed to...scare the fuck out of me). Now it's back to business... No Kuestionnaire today, I just back yesterday and barely had time to piece one together, but I'll make that up for you this weekend as we will be getting exclusive access to the Treasure Island Festival ! So expect some surprises and awesome 'treasures' [...]

One of the bands out there that is in the midst of the reunion fever right now is Sunny Day Real Estate, a band that was around in the mid to late 90s and had one superbly spectacular debut album called Diary and then a few more albums and about a hundred break ups after that. Well they reunited for this tour earlier this year and fortunately came through Dallas last Monday night for some early 90s rock to get on, and it was some great shit. I [...]

Built to Spill 's latest album There is No Enemy is being released today, and includes their typical guitar-heavy melodies and Doug Martsch meanderings and while I can't say they approach their golden era of Perfect From Now On and Keep it Like a Secret , they have put out a solid new album that I'm definitely glad to hear. Standout tracks for me include the opener "Aisle 13", the superbly sublime "Nowhere Lullaby" and the lengthy lullaby "Things Fall Apart." Like Yo La Tengo or Sonic Youth, it's good to hear that they're still [...]

Keeping with this ongoing theme of new albums I've failed to mention over the past month or so continues with A Sunny Day In Glasgow and their recently released second album titled Ashes Grammar . As their name may lead you to believe, they are not actually from Glasgow or anywhere remotely nearby, but are actually a Philadelphia-based group. I remember hearing them on the radio a few years ago while driving through Atlanta on the interstate. I was instantly hooked, and not knowing for months what the exact song I [...]
In his relatively short time hosting Late Night , Jimmy Fallon seems to be securing fantastic musical guests night after night at an improbable rate. A night after Dirty Projectors brought "When the World Comes to an End" to the stage, 90's emo/alternative legends Sunny Day Real Estate perform "Seven" from their landmark 1994 album debut, Diary . The sound is still as remarkably clean as it was all those years ago with all four of the original members. The band will appear at the [...]
It's "Seven," and pretty rad actually, Jeremy Enigk's unnerving resemblance to James Taylor notwithstanding. Though I do think all Fallon performances should have a Questlove Cam, registering hi... Continue reading "Sunny Day Real Estate Played Jimmy Fallon" >

Last night the reunited emo legends gave Jimmy Fallon "Seven," the first track from their classic 1994 full-length debut Diary . There was more anticipatory energy in the air at that secret show at Hell's Kitchen in Tacoma a couple weeks ago, but as far as Late Night outings go, the guys do bring it. Not surprising: Between Jeremy Enigk's solo work and the Foo Fighters, they're old pros even with fifteen years of SDRE rust. That, and it's not the first time they brought "Seven" to national TV. Contrast/compare, and take a pass at these shots [...]

A few nights ago, Emily was lucky enough to catch the reunion tour of Sunny Day Real Estate at Terminal 5 in NYC. I was super grateful for the coverage but crazy jealous SDRE weren't coming anywhere near me on their epic reunion tour. I've had the good fortune of watching Jeremy Enigk solo a few times, yet the one time I was primed to catch The Fire Theft (probably my favorite Enigk-related project) in NYC at Bowery Ballroom.. and they cancelled [...]
Sunny Day Real Estate is the crazy ex-boyfriend of indie rock. They have broken our hearts repeatedly, yet we continue to believe things can change. In 1994, they wooed us with their first album, Diary , one of the finest examples of raw, guitar-driven, emotion-fueled rock. As the band was working on their sophomore album, LP2 (aka, The Pink Album ), they freaked out and abruptly (and I do mean *abruptly*) split up the band when the stress of their quickly rising fame became too much to bear. Sub Pop eventually salvaged [...]
