Once again it's time to look back into the past. This mix starts with two covers and it even has a remix of a Passion Pit song. Luckily, the remix is by Pollination . Just what was November 2008 like? It was a little like this… Downloadables: Banned From The Roxy (mp3) by Jeffrey Lewis We Didn't Start The Fire (mp3) by The Forms Focus (mp3) by The Forms [...]
is it just me or does jesu seem more at home here than on hydra head? doth broadrick on these records not have more in common with the fuzzy slo-mo murmurings of mark kozelek and alan sparhawks rockist tendencies? i think so. in fact i'd be so bloody bold (though not really) to say that this shit is just red house painters turned way the fuck up. actually that's a pretty stupid thing to come out with. retraction, your honour. anyhoo. this is the new ep. and all my favourite jesu shit comes out on ep. [...]

Brooklyn based 3 piece The Depreciation Guild (who include 2 members of The Pains Of Pure At Heart) have announced their debut UP tour. Described by Pitchfork as " Laptop pop and shoegaze" the band bring their dream-pop meets 8-bit sound to our shores to play both headline slots and support dates with The Pains Of Pure At Heart The tour precedes a new album release scheduled for early 2010 through the Brooklyn indie label Kanine records (Grizzly Bear, Chairlift, Superblood) which is the [...]
Constants are set to record with Jesu and Godflesh member, Justin Broadrick. The band is currently on a fall tour supporting their album, The Foundation, The Machine, The Ascension , and they have begun demoing with plans to begin tracking later this year in guitarist/vocalist Will Benoit's burgeoning recording studio, located in a historic barn deep in the woods of Connecticut.. They commented: Justin remixed a song for the Japanese version of our last album (Stiff Slack Records), and we were really into the direction he took the music. After talking with him [...]

When it comes to the sludgy halls of doom, drone, and post-metal, few bands provide the positive outlook that Jesu does.Their music has always emphasized a slow, heavy sound, but it rarely dips into darkness. It's really the opposite. The band has a real crush on major chords, making massive ballads that are worth flicking a lighter for. The band has a new EP out, Opiate Sun, via Caldo Verde Recs
Former Godflesh/current Jesu mastermind Justin Broadrick has a Twitter account. Now while this could be troublesome/groanworthy news for some characters prone to oversharing (though certainly not in Metal Sucks' case), for Broadrick, it seems fitting, given his prolific approach to music. His output is measured in months, not years, as is the case with most [...]

The Reik is, in essence, the Web of Oaths that binds the Folk together in vor tru (our faith); as much as it is a "church", it is also a systematic tether, which binds those of our Thiud together as a tribe of inter-dependant clans and rooftrees. Normandy clings to the values and principles of retro-tribalism and takes the cultural context and tribal dynamics of our ancestors and works them into a modern expression. It is not for the timid, it is not an easy path, but it is Vor Normannitas, Our Own Normanness, and therefore worth [...]

R.E.M.'s live album, Live at the Olympia (2-CD) , finally hits stores tomorrow, along with Devendra Banhart's major label debut What Will Be and The Swell Season's Strict Joy . From what has already been sent my way, I can strongly recommend BOAT's Setting the Paces , Gemma Ray's Lights Out Zoltar! , Hem's Twelfth Night soundtrack , and Tegan and Sara's Sainthood . [...]
New music this week includes release by Jesu, Jozef Van Wissem, Ocean, Holy Sons, and Merzbow and old music this week includes a classic reissue from Sun Ra.
This week may provide the greatest variety of music releases all year. From Sufjan Stevens' debut classical work, The BQE to Jay Farrar and Benjamin Gibbard's collaborative effort One Fast Move or I'm Gone: Music From Kerouac's Big Sur to Things About Comin' My Way - A Tribute to The Mississippi Sheiks , the week's release list is filled with variety. The week is deep in quality releases, from what I have already heard I can strongly recommend The Atlas [...]

http://www.flickr.com/photos/l etfunbegin/ / CC BY 2.0 The 2009 record release season pretty much comes to an end this week, but here is everything left to come out this year that I'm interested in checking out. I also linked each release with the best possible preview or review of it that I could find, so click on anything you're interested in and learn about it: October 20: Atlas Sound Logos Dark Meat [...]

It really is a shame that a band like UK's Snowblood can go relatively unnoticed during their run while other critically praised bands that operate within the same area musically continue to do so, however less effectively. I was introduced to the band when their second album Being and Becoming was released in 2005 and it was a massive listen of sludgy doom ridden tunes that grabbed my attention from the start. I have never been a big fan of that sort of thing over the [...]

In the Book Notes series, authors create and discuss a music playlist that relates in some way to their recently published book. Libba Bray's novel Going Bovine , a modern day Don Quixote tale, hurtles through time and space with self-effacing humor. Mad cow disease, string theory, punk fairies, and animated lawn gnomes, combine with Bray's storytelling genius to produce one of the year's funniest and most surprisingly moving books. Catch Libba Bray reading (with Lev Grossman ) at the first edition of the Largehearted Lit reading series on [...]
