The third installment of my "Unheard Of" column is up at In Review Online. As usual, it features some artists I've already covered along with some I haven't. I'll post some links below, but for the full article and free songs , check out the full thing HERE. Will Stratton - "...over the course of two records - particularly No Wonder - he's demonstrated a steadily increasing level of maturity and brought greater depth to his songwriting" [...]

For ramblings on how I came to compile this list go here . And for commentary on previous selections: [ #50-46 ] [ #45-41 ] [ #40-36 ] 35. Ys - Joanna Newsom (2006) I get an amazing number of hits to my site from people googling the phrase " I Hate Joanna Newsom ", simply because the word ' hate ' is in the title of this here blog, and I've talked about Ms Newsom [...]
by BBG A pale and heavily photoshopped David Pajo returns from church As previously discussed , Until The Light Takes Us is the much talked about documentary chronicling the Norwegian Black Metal scene, which after months of anticipation, is FINALLY getting a theatrical release in NYC on Dec 4th (you can catch it at Cinema Village). Featuring a killer lineup of interviewees (Fenriz, Hellhammer, Frost, Abbath, Harmony Korine, and even the elusive and now free [...]

Many of Alexa Woodward's banjo-driven folk songs slowly slink like fog down from the Appalachian mountains and hills of Virgina and wrap your soul in melancholy. Woodward's 2009 release, Speck , is full of subtle textures and well-matched harmonies that support interesting and well-written narratives. Eleanor , a new track not included on Speck , is just a wee-bit more pop-friendly than what we've heard previously from Woodward. Alexa will perform at [...]

What if there were a parallel world where the Beatles never broke up? If you visit one site today, make it this one Carbon/Silicon are giving their new album, The Carbon Bubble , away for free on their site starting this past Saturday Fix Your Mix has a very comprehensive compositional analysis of Grizzly Bear's "Ready, Able" Liam Gallagher is forming a new band without big brother Noel Dan Deacon forced to cancel his tour after being hospitalized with [...]

[The internet has a habit of making friends of strangers and I guess I would have to describe Campfires & Battlefields as my best friend-I've-never-met. He is one of the longest standing readers and commenters of this blog, and has written another two fine Sunday Supplement posts for us this week. Cheers C&B.] To me modern German music has always been about the monosyllabic pioneers of Krautrock. Can. Faust. Neu! Or perhaps the ear-shattering crunch of Einsturzende Neubauten's strategies against architecture. Brilliant stuff, but forbidding too; and sometimes a little too Baader-Meinhof for my bourgeois ass. [...]

A few years ago, the only Joanna pics you'd see painted her to be a sylvan nymph. Now she's casually popping up on all the street style blogs , even when they don't realize it's her. That's the transformative power of a good coat (or of hanging out in NYC a bunch). (via FADER )
Regina Spektor (Nokia Theater): I know I'm really supposed to hate Regina Spektor, but I just don't. She kind of sounds like a more Billboard-friendly Joanna Newsom mixed with the cocky tendency to do revisionist versions of classic songs on piano; something that many piano players and keyboardists tend to do, and I'm thinking of everyone from Tori Amos to Sean Kirkpatrick . Some people pull it off beautifully, some don't. Spektor is somewhere in the middle. Even though I know this is pretty much music for children, I [...]

In the Book Notes series, authors create and discuss a music playlist that relates in some way to their recently published book. Joshua Gaylord's debut novel, Hummingbirds , caused Kirkus reviews to call him "an impressive new voice in American fiction," and I have to agree. Gaylord eloquently paints the relationships and interactions of his characters, both adult and teen, male and female, with rare and impressive insight into human character in this compelling story of an all-girls high school.. Library Journal wrote of the book: [...]

MP3: Joanna Newsom - Inflammatory Writ #16 - Joanna Newsom - The Milk-Eyed Mender Drag City Records 2004 Joey On The Milk-Eyed Mender: Great album. I saw her at UConn one time right before Ys came out and it was just her playing those songs. It was nuts. Chris and Maggie were there and I ran into Sean and Ryan from Quiet Life too. It was a romp. The Milk-Eyed Mender is the one for me and I remember Ezra made me [...]
Here's another end-of-the-decade question that we sent out to a varied list of people in the arts, music and entertainment communities. WHAT MAKES YOU FEEL RELIEVED, CONTENT OR EXCITED ABOUT THE CURRENT STATE OF MUSIC? But don't just take their word for it, what are you excited about? Please leave your thoughts in the comments section below. Alex Cohen, host, All Things Considered on KPCC; contributor, NPR's Song of the Day: That there will always be talented young [...]

Read on for an in-depth list of albums that are expected to be released in 2010, as well as those which have been running through the rumor mill for the last few weeks. ○○○●● ICELANDIC singer songwriter and Mum member Olof Arnalds crafts a soundscape as barren as the wilds of her homeland on Vid Og Vid . Luckily this, her soon-to-be re-released 2007 debut, is a beautifully sparse folk collection which at times is also as breathtaking - such as on the rich Nattsongur . Over the course of the full LP, her Joanna Newsom -meets-Bagpuss sound, coupled with the language barrier, can be heavy going. But I still hope next year's sophomore Arnalds release, Okidoki , which as with this LP [...]

endless endless endless : black talisman - this frankly is rather beautiful. in every way. handsomely packaged as some kind of laser etched shamanic artefact. and aurally the kindof shit that wouldn't sound out of place on not not fun or next to james ferraro's holy mountain output. self described as a post-noise duo that plays guitar and gameboys. i came expecting dj scotch egg instead i got a fountain of bliss. a balming wash of drawn out orgasmic whale noise, korgesque squelch and nes eight bit percussion. they inhabit a soothing [...]
