The first update of 2010 (and the first in more than 3 months!) is two days late, partly due to a computer virus, but better late than never! I'd almost forgotten how to write these. The website hasn't been entirely fallow since November; I've posted Best of 2009 posts on "music albums" and " Summerworks shows" , with "Fringe shows" coming up soon, and "comedy shows" and "music singles" not far behind. But the core of the site - the updates - well, it's good to have one of those up again, and I'm going to try to [...]

Some random thoughts and takeaways from this week's NMS LA: It was exciting to see both a sold out crowd and this great event coming into its own. It's a credit to the tenacity of Tom Silverman and Dave Lory and bodes well for the future of the new music business. It's also refreshing that almost no one asks, "How can I get a record deal?" anymore , but rather "How can I move my career forward?" [...]

It's true – Aerosmith frontman Steven Tyler auditioned to replace Robert Plant in Led Zeppelin. It was early in the summer of 2008 that a rumor began circulating about Tyler trying out for Zeppelin – six months after the band's reunion gig with Robert Plant on vocals at London's O2 Arena. …And it's a rumor that Aerosmith guitarist Joe Perry now confirms. Perry tell s Classic Rock Magazine : "Steven disappeared and I called around. Somebody said that he was in London trying out for [...]

Thinking about music and songs...all these songs I've been listening to...for the past DECADE...a decade that I lived and loved in, rose up in and shouted...out loud..."sing me that song that I want to hear"..."sing it for me would you?"..."and please don't mind me, I'll just sit here and listen". All these songs in no particular order...served up one a day. Solomon Burke--"Valley of Tears" (2006) Amazon: Solomon Burke-- Nashville [...]

From day one of The Pop Cop , this blog has directed readers to the MySpace page of any artist we've written about. The social networking site's instant ability to let fans hear streamed songs packaged in a consistent, practical set-up made it a much more reliable alternative to linking to a band's custom-made website. Recently, however, it has been pretty hard to resist the urge to hunt down the people who run MySpace and give them a right good kick to the crotch. They seem hellbent on making the experience increasingly annoying for everyone. Musicians are [...]

We lived those nights, like we were dying...On the long haul drives, for our Amaria...With the ragged sails high, and the radio on -" Angry Johnny and the Radio," The Gaslight Anthem How do destined-to-be-favorite songs find their audience in the download era? Has the digital music revolution of the past decade made it easier to find music while simultaneously making it harder for music to find us? While discussing these questions with a fellow music dork a while back, we admitted that even [...]

January being the birth month of Allen Toussaint , I thought I'd come back from my year-end break and devote a few posts to some music associated with him, as I used to do on my old radio show, and here some years past. On another note, I'll also be putting up some Carnival-related tunes in the coming weeks, as the season is now rolling with Twelfth Night just past and Mardi Gras just a bit more than a month away. But, back to Toussaint [...]
