Los Angeles punk veterans X have announced a handful of December tour dates in California. The band's second "Merry Xmas" show takes place on December 19th in LA with guests Calexico. Dates in Sacramento and San Francisco to follow. Keeping with the holiday theme, the group recently convened at guitarist Billy Zoom's studio to record their versions of the standards "Santa Claus is coming to Town" and "Jingle Bells." Expect them to be available this Thanksgiving as a "digital 45." X has had a busy year. Frontman John [...]
This poster was posted by The Sadies on Facebook yesterday and my jaw hit the floor. If I was independently wealthy I would be on the next plane to Madrid. Holy mother of pearl, what a lineup! If any of my fine readers happen to be from Spain, and happen to attend one of these shows, I will post your review on my blog, even if it is in Spanish. Or, even better, if you want to fly me to Madrid to attend this show, please contact me at rockstaraimz at gmail dot com. [...]
[It's not Oct. 31, no matter what the first item would lead you to believe, but it is Usher's birthday. Best wishes, and here's your deluge of shows tonight ...] Canadian duo Junior Boys [pictured, with download below] headline the El Rey Theatre, and don't be alarmed if you see some costumed crazies along Wilshire Boulevard. The electro-pop maestros, touring being their latest album "Begone Dull Care," are encouraging attendees to dress up as if it were Halloween. "I was obsessed with Halloween as a kid, I waited [...]
Blk Jks Play Spaceland On Thursday Nights like Thursday are just a cruel joke to live music fans. It's another insane week of shows - old legends, new legends, 90's heroes and current Pitchfork darlings. I caught Polvo last Saturday. The problems I had with their set list a few months back at the Echoplex were corrected. Great set. They played everything I wanted to hear. Monday 10/12/09 [Pick of the Night] Light FM [...]
Pearl Jam holds a special sort of significance for me, as I can trace a lot of my early musical wanderings back to Pearl Jam, grunge, and the various incarnations of alternative rock. And because of this, I've always held a deep desire to see them live. Especially when I see review after review detailing how well they can dominate a stage. But, my wallet hates me and I've always been broke when they come around, leaving me to make up the difference with bootlegs and/or some other poor excuse for my lack of attendance. Thankfully, that all changed [...]

I had one of those mystical communions with this song, years ago. In a piny subdivision, watching a video documentary about the band. Maybe having smoked some weed. Probably. The tuneful summing up. The strange uplifting hopelessness. DJ Bonebreak was one of the great drummers. Muscular and crisp and driving, without ever being showy or too spastic. Shocking how much John Doe and Exene sound like Grace Slick and Marty Balin. Billy Zoom was like a robot god inhabiting a punk greaser. Shocking, too, how much this sounds like a lost track from the cast recording of Hair. The title [...]
Wow, talk about shocking! A industry produced mixtape that actually has mixing on it. At first my expectations were pretty low considering Duck Down's 2008 mixtape "Hotline" but this collection of tunes from Duck Down artists is pretty golden. The only exception being Kidz In Hall's "Flickin". Why was that song included I don't hazard a guess but "Mixed Emotions" and "No Love" by Team Facelift more than makeup for that minor stumble. All in all with the likes of KRS One,DJ Revolution,Team [...]
STRIKING OUT ON HIS OWN The independent record business in New Orleans was always volatile and precarious. Starting with the first wave in the mid-1950s, numerous local labels formed and folded, with most lasting just a few years, if that. The opportunity to score a big hit was always there to tempt entrepreneurs; but the odds against it were steep - like a shot at winning the lottery or picking a winning horse out at the Fairgrounds racetrack - unless, of course, Allen Toussaint was writing and producing the [...]

BOB DYLAN + JOHN DOE @ HOLLYWOOD PALLADIUM
The mood of the music reveals Dylan as he is now and the lazy grooves perfect for a man who no doubt has had some time to reflect, but has not lost his fun or caustic wit. "Tweedle Dee & Tweedle Dum" is an example of a tune with this swing and bite. I was warned that Dylan no longer plays guitar on stage. Finally seeing Dylan and he won't pick-up a guitar? Blasphemy!
Fucked Up, Tim Robbins put on their own music festivals
You probably never expected to see the Polaris Prize winning band Fucked Up and actor Tim Robbins in the same headline. But thanks to similar ventures, in the form of their own personal music festivals, that fantasy has now become a reality. From October 26-31, Fucked Up will take to venues across Toronto for the awesomely titled Fucked Up Weekend 2009. Among those scheduled to take part include Little Girls, Cro-Mags, The Rival Mob, Free Spirit, Burning Love, and The Bang Bangs, and of course Fucked Up will play two sets during [...]

Vivian Girls - Phoenix tonight
Brooklyn's Vivian Girls bangs out their rockin' pop tonight at Modified Arts in downtown Phoenix. Their MySpace page mentions three influences - The Wipers , The Shangri-Las and Nirvana - which sounds absolutely spot on to me. I also hear some X in the vocal interplay as well (minus the John Doe factor). A little surprising that they're not in NYC during next week's big CMJ Music fest , but the tour will keep the Vivian Girls busy until the end of the month. Here's a [...]
