From the very first year of that lamentable decade, and the solo album that sold five or six copies in his hometown alone, please enjoy the amazing Ron Nagle and his kick-ass ironic (or is it?) anti-drug anthem "Marijuana Hell." Although not, alas, a household word, Nagle's nonetheless a really interesting guy. A member of terrific first generation San Francisco band The Mystery Trend (click here and scroll down to hear one of their songs) he went on to a [...]

John Hiatt : Icy Blue Heart [ purchase ] I can see my breath when I hear this song. John Hiatt makes you feel the chill in the air. This probably takes place in a well heated bar, but that heat isn't reaching these two. Yes, cold is an extended metaphor for matters of the heart, but it's no less real for that.

This is John Hiatt performing a solo acoustic set at the Take Root Festival in Oosterpoort, Groningen, Holland back on the 4th October 2008. The material is a mixture of songs from across the years, along with a few from his current album of the time 'Same Old Man'. Some artists have the ability to grab my attention from the first chord and in this case the power, passion, energy and full sound just adds to the occasion. The radio host mentioned that John was flown in especially for this gig, having performed in [...]
Veteran singer/songwriter John Hiatt has been a distinctive catalyst for roots-driven, uniquely American music in a career spanning more than 35 years. With sharply pointed, poetic lyricism and a penchant for a sound that spans guitar-blazing southern swamp rock, country-shaded acoustic ballads and mournful, tear-in-your-beer roadhouse waltzes, Hiatt's eighteen solo albums have also been blessed with exceptional players including Ry Cooder , Nick Lowe and longtime backing guitarist Sonny Landreth . His songs "Have A Little Faith In Me" and "Riding With the King" are just two songs that have [...]

Live Daily is reporting blues-rockin' guitarist Joe Bonamassa will spend most of the spring pounding the pavement in support of his forthcoming 10th studio set, "Black Rock." Following a late-February leg in Russia, the singer/songwriter/guitarist will kick off the US portion with a March 3 show in Eugene, OR. The two-month trek crisscrosses the country, stopping by theaters in 30 cities through a March 8 concert in Omaha. Details are included below. "Black Rock," Bonamassa's 10th solo effort, is slated to hit retailers March 23 and will mark his sixth release on [...]

Barton Carroll Together You And I Skybucket Records [2010] Fire Note Says: Seek this singer/songwriter out! Album Review: There are always albums that define an artist. That one record in their collection where everything seems to work and it offers up an enjoyable listen from beginning to end. Barton Carroll's fourth album Together You And I is that record. From the excellent storytelling to the [...]

John Hiatt & The Goners : My Dog and Me [ purchase ] This week's theme is challenging for me for a couple of reasons. Not long ago, I posted a set of dog songs at my place , and I don't want to repeat myself. Also, I am a cat person, and dogs are not really my thing. Still, duty calls. Actually, if I was ever going to change my mind about dogs, this might be the song that would do it. John Hiatt describes a peaceful [...]
The Delta blues are harmonica and guitar based - best exemplified by Robert Johnson . As the blues moved north up the Mississippi River to St. Louis piano was added, as in the works of Lonnie Johnson and Roosevelt Sykes . Once the blues hit Chicago guitars and bass were amplified and drums were added. Dominant 9th chords also joined the major scale blues chord structure, as in the music of Muddy Waters and Willie Dixon Back down in Texas the blues integrated [...]

What a silly exercise! For starters, I scarcely recall most of the live performances I took in the first half of this decade. And it would make a lot more sense if I made separate genre lists- classical, country, jazz, metal, etc. But I didn't. In order to lessen the absurdity by just a fraction, I didn't include any shows from 2009. That list is here . I've added representative (but not same show) video links for the uninitiated. Here goes: 1. The Hold Steady - Jackpot Saloon, 2006 [...]

The Neville Brothers - Washable Ink ( buy ) How a good song gets oiled to perfection, or: Aaron Neville sings John Hiatt. "Washable ink, if you think it stinks you can cry it away, they don´t want to hear your sad story today, everybody's busy whoever they are..." Smooth and easy.

A friend of mine comes over my place from time to time and likes to call it "Mantown." I laugh every time he says it. Why does he call it "Mantown?" Because everywhere you look there are framed rock posters. Led Zeppelin, Robert Johnson, Nirvana, The Who, Nine Inch Nails, Peter Gabriel, The Rolling Stones, U2, New Order, Dave Mason, The Clash, Bob Dylan, Gov't Mule, Pink Floyd, Eric Clapton, She Wants Revenge, AC/DC, Bruce Springsteen, The White Stripes, Radiohead, John Hiatt and a Chicago blues bar called "Blue Chicago" all have prominent wall space in my crib. It's only [...]

Numerous times during this month I've heard people comment on how they love fall, how the cool, crisp weather is a welcome from the dog days of summer. The leaves are colorful, Halloween decorations are up, and you can almost feel the anticipation of Thanksgiving and Christmas. For the pessimists and Goths, autumn can also symbolize death - leaves falling from the trees, leaving the bare branches exposed to the cold, cruel winter. A bit macbre, if not poetic. For me fall seems somewhere in between - a bit of anticipation and beauty, contrasted by sadness [...]
There are two kinds of people in the world: those who hear "I saw Lyle Lovett and John Hiatt in concert last night" and get it and those who don't. The ones who don't get it need an explanation and even then don't get it. It's like describing sex to someone who's never had it. The description always falls short of the experience. That's why truly great concerts (and sex) live on in your memory and the rest get reviews. John Hiatt - The Open Road (Live Acoustic) [...]

MP3: Luke Doucet - "Blood's Too Rich" We've covered Luke Doucet's wife, Melissa McClelland , on this blog quite a bit, so now it's time to give some props to her husband. He's going out on tour in support of his most recent album, Blood's Too Rich , and after a bunch of various dates, Doucet will take to a cruise on February 21-26 with Melissa McClelland, Emmylou Harris, John Hiatt, Lyle Lovett, and Steve Earle. Luke Doucet tour dates: Dates marked * [...]

It's surely coincidence that tonight should see such a great blend of country-influenced music all across town, but it's a great chance to broaden your tastes if you've avoided the genre in the past. I'm giving you a SITKOT 90% no-twang-guarantee. If you lean toward the jam, the bluegrass-hippie stylings of Yonder Mountain String Band always please the ear, as they will tonight in Millvale. If you're in the over-35 crowd or just in the mood to chill, western-style, you might consider staying in town for the lush compositions of Cowboy Junkies. I'll [...]
