Sunday, November 15, 2009 I meant to get this up the week after the Austin Film Festival came to a close, but a crazy schedule prevented me from doing so. Anyhow, here's a quick rundown of what I saw at the AFF: Precious: Easily one of the year's best films. Not necessarily easy to watch (nor is it a movie you'll want to view repeatedly), but the story is full of life and possibility, which makes for something that's easy to love. With the extra Best Picture nomination slots this [...]
John Ralston: "Ghetto Tested" I'm enjoying the recent wave of emo troubadours, now that Dashboard Confessional is pretty much out of the way. Guys like Ace Enders, Jon Nolan, even The New Amsterdams. There are a whole bunch of others and one of those is John Ralston . From Lake Worth, FL he took a similar road after his stint with Legends of Rodeo, a band I love. Their early Americana/alt-country/emo hybrid seemed foreign in 2002 but now seems almost commonplace. Ralston has embraced that ethic even more so with his solo releases, [...]

All credit on this one due to AP and the Columbus Public Library. Beautiful, sad songs abound on the album 2006 release 'Needle Bed' from Florida based singer/songwriter John Ralston. The entire record is well worth your time, but as I was listening to it for the first time yesterday I kept going back to the song I am sharing here...brilliant stuff. * 'Hang A Sign' MP3

A few weeks ago I had the pleasure of hosting Richmond, VA's Glows in the Dark on WFMU. Representing a nice little active scene in Richmond, Glows exists on an axis where avant jazz and film soundtracks meet. And while that may sound on paper like it could be a mess, in reality the seamlessness between the two styles is pretty astonishing. So when I marveled to guitarist/chief songwriter Scott Burton at the audible effortlessness of moving between driving four-on-the-floor beats to free scree to lounge music to creeping horror film scores, he confessed that the band spends [...]

If you are fan of one or maybe more of these bands (as I guess), have a stop at the daytrotter and get the 4 song sessions of them! Incredible concept, incredible acceptance, incredible songs... John Ralston has posted a new demo over at his MySpace page titled "Blacklisted." His last full-length was 2007's Sorry Vampire on Vagrant, with a more recent eMusic-exclusive EP, White Spiders, being released....
