Seattle's Gavin Guss is pop veteran who's played with Nada Surf, Jon Auer, Harvey Danger, Fountains of Wayne and his own band The Tycoons. Important to note, Gavin was also lead singer/songwriter with the short lived group Tubetop who produced a pure pop masterpiece in Three Minute Hercules . Given these facts you know what to expect and he really delivers with his solo album Mercury Mine . Starting with the gentle acoustic hook in "X" it leads to a glorious McCartney-like chorus, that builds to sticky goodness in the multi-track harmonic [...]

photos by Lori Baily Happy Holidays! I take on more than I can handle. That results in a lot of unposted content. In the name of catching up, while also taking it easy during this final week of the year, here's some of that lost material. Where was Alex Chilton on Wednesday night? At the Brooklyn Masonic Temple, he was onstage, more or less, standing at the far right, sometimes even near his microphone (and sometimes even using [...]

Johnnie Cluney Last post before the holidays! And it comes courtesy of the ever-lovin' Daytrotter , who've managed to wrangle a studio session of soon-to-be holiday classics from the animated miscreants of Aqua Teen Hunger Force . If the idea of Shake, Meatwad and Carl celebrating the season in song doesn't do it for you, well I'm sorry, I don't want to know you. And no, I don't know where Frylock is - maybe he doesn't celebrate Christmas. Or sing. Or both. And for context, the Aqua Teen Hunger Force [...]

I've closed the voting for the Coverville Countdown 2009, and I'm tabulating the results right now. Some old favorites on the list, as well as some new independent stuff that I'm really happy to see made the grade. Starting tomorrow, we'll countdown the top 40 on the last four shows of the decade! And as promised, following the break, see the entire list of nominees: Here is the full list of nominees (minus the songs inducted into the Coverville Hall Of Fame ) '19992 - Red Dirt Rangers [orig. Funny thing, I was so swamped with regular LPs this year, I honestly didn't even review a full ten EPs. Partially due to the fact the majority of EPs I hear don't come from the power pop genre, strictly speaking. However I feel these release would stand as essential to your 2009 music collection. Greg Pope "Pete" EP Bryan Scary & The Shredding Tears "Mad Valentines" EP Josh Fix "This Town [...]
The truth is coming out...I'm list-averse. Shopping or to-do, I just don't do 'em. And the finale of another year won't kick me in gear. But I do have some year-end cappers in the form of my one pick for record of the year and one for the release that I actually listened to the most. Intellectually, both could be miles apart. But are they? The actual release most listened to in '09 truly breaks two 'cardinal rules' in a manner. Firstly, the thing came out in August '08. Secondly, I own [...]
Most Likely To: lead to a spike in John Oates and Andrew Ridgeley jokes. I don't know whether to feel a little bad for Scott Kannberg or just think he's a lucky, lucky bastard. There's no way he imagined that twenty years after he started calling himself Spiral Stairs, palling around with Stephen Malkmus, and hanging out in Gary Young's basement recording studio that he'd get the call. You know: "Spiral. It's me, Steve. We're getting the band back together." Like the Pixies and Dinosaur Jr., Pavement has agreed to [...]

Let me be honest: I've known of the existence of both Husker Dϋ and Pavement for about as long as I've known what music was, but I've never really explored what either band sounded like. They're both obvious icons of the indie-rock world, and for that I've always held respect for them, but have just never really took the time to listen to their music. Then I discovered Scott Kannberg—former guitarist for Pavement—and his newest project, Spiral Stairs . I was absolutely blown away, and even more so when I found out they'd be playing [...]
Pavement co-founder Scott "Spiral Stairs" Kannberg released a couple of impressive albums earlier this decade as Preston School of Industry. He reverts to his '90s moniker for the release Tuesday of "The Real Feel," which the Seattle-based guitarist made with assists from Kevin Drew (Broken Social Scene) and Jon Auer (the Posies), among others. It's introspective, '70s-feeling guitar rock with bite, not exactly the "brooding, depressing" music Kannberg has made it out to be, but still heavy enough that you know it's a breakup (actually, in his case, divorce) album. ||| Download: "Maltese [...]

Jonathan Taggart Saying I was a bit award-ed out following last week's Polaris Prize gala would be something of an understatement, so the ceremonies for the Verge XM Awards the following night were largely ignored around these parts. But that doesn't mean the results weren't of interest - okay, Alexisonfire winning album of the year was of zero interest, but the declaration of Vancouver's Dan Mangan as artist of the year certainly drew a double-take. This response had nothing to do with Mangan or [...]

DOWNLOAD: Spiral Stairs - Maltese Terrier (MP3) Scott "Spiral Stairs" Kannberg of Preston School of Industry and Pavement ( who are reuniting ) is set to release his first album as Spiral Stairs on October 20th. That record, The Real Feel , will be released by Matador in the US and Domino in the UK. The first MP3, "Maltese Terrier" (or "Maltese T" as its listed below in the [...]

I wasn't going to do Bumbershoot this year. Initially I had planned to be out of town, and then I let myself be influenced by the complaints of my friends and my own reluctance. I wasn't too jazzed about the prospect of hanging out with a million (give or take) people in the hot sun/pouring rain all day long, or paying three times the ticket price than when I first began attending. And I wasn't overly enthralled with the headlining talent they selected (though I do love Michael Franti and Spearhead ). But then I ran [...]
