Cracker with Camper Van Beethoven - The Middle East, Cambridge MA (January 16, 2010) It's not often that a musician gets to open for himself, but I've now seen this neat trick played out twice in the last four months, as David Lowery sang with Camper Van Beethoven prior to Cracker handling closing duties (Lou Barlow was the other instance, doing a solo set prior to Dinosaur Jr.). Expanding on the 'Campout' concept when the two bands first got on a bill together in 2005, they took to the road this year and ended [...]

(photo courtesy: Pitch-a-Tent) Cracker came back into the mainstream this year when the first single, "Turn On, Tune In, Drop Out With Me", from their Sunshine in the Land of Milk and Honey CD hit the Billboard charts. Cracker and the reconvened Camper Van Beethoven have been playing a series of double-bills which kicked off in California right after Christmas and the two bands' Traveling Apothecary Show hits the Highline Ballroom on Jan. 15th. Cracker, featuring co-founders David Lowery (vocals/ guitar) and Johnny Hickman (lead guitar / vocals), along with bassist [...]

Contributor Mike Bailey enjoys talking about records from yesteryear -- the 70's, 80's and 90's -- that influenced what's happening today. Thus, Gold Soundz was born. (Props to Pavement for the perfect name.) In this piece, Bailey takes a different seminal indie record every week and examines its significance and impact on the present. Camper Van Beethoven : Our Beloved Revolutionary Sweetheart (Virgin, 1988) [...]
Lists are so passé. Lists are to the blogging internet what bleak endings are to Kubrick films, what innuendo is to Mae West, what neurosis is to Woody Allen, what self-consciousness is to French New Wave. Lists have been done to death, and Donnybrook has an established history of setting trends, not reinforcing them; so the following is in no way a list of any sort, just a free flowing mess of films that made up 2008's cinematic offerings. Most Meta Film of the Year: Michael Haneke's [...]

[photo by Ian Weintraub from Jonathan Segel's MySpace photos ] After his impressive multi-instrument performances with Camper Van Beethoven on Friday and Saturday , Jonathan Segel stepped forward and performed a set at Pianos last Sunday. Segel's solo work features primarily his songwriting and outstanding guitar work. Although the Pianos set was limited by time constraints, there was certainly enough time for Segel to exhibit his guitar proficiency to the intimate yet enthusiastic crowd. The highlights included "Civil Disobedience" and the catchy "I Can't Help [...]

[photo by nyctaper] If its possible to summarize twenty-five years of making music into one show, then Camper Van Beethoven was about as successful as possible last night at Bowery Ballroom . The well-paced set lasted nearly two hours and the twenty-nine songs were selected judiciously from their entire catalog. Each member of the band had their moments, but we were particularly focused on Jonathan Segel, who flowed naturally from violin to guitar to organ, often simultaneously, and all while he provided vocal harmonies. The highlight of the evening was the main set closer, [...]

by Bill Pearis Currently celebrating their 25th anniversary, Camper Van Beethoven are playing Friday (1/9) ( tickets ) and Saturday (1/10) ( tickets ) at Bowery Ballroom in NYC - the band's first shows here since 2006 (thx anon). They also played some shows in 2004 when they released New Roman Times , their first album of original material in 15 years. Camper Van Beethoven were one of the few bands of [...]
We have read elsewhere and been told in emails that KEXP, a Seattle-based radio station that broadcasts locally in NYC on 91.5 FM has been reporting that the Sunday night show at Piano's with Victor Krummenacher and Jonathan Segel of Camper Van Beethoven is actually a CVB secret show. As far as we know, this is not actually correct. Victor and Jonathan are each performing full band solo sets, and while we are told that all the members of CVB will be in attendance, there is currently no scheduled full [...]

[image by Songbirdnest ] Happy 2009 to all of our readers. This promises to be an interesting year for NYCTaper. There are four major areas of development for the site, with more details to follow. NYCTaper has been invited to produce a weekly radio show for a large new fledgling web radio station. The details are still being worked out, but expect more information in the Spring. We also expect to present more concerts this year, the first of which is our exciting show on January 11 at [...]

It has been two and half years since Camper Van Beethoven performed live in NYC. We were there to record that Irving Plaza performance (listen below) and we will be there when they return to NYC for two nights at Bowery Ballroom on Friday January 9 and Saturday January 10 . The shows are being billed as a 25th Anniversary celebration, although the actual 25th anniversary show took place last February at the Fillmore in San Francisco. CVB bassist Victor Krummenacher is performing the opening [...]

Every so often in music, the loss of a loved one seems to evoke some of the most passionate and moving creations from deep within an artist. The Arcade Fire proved this on their magnificent 2004 debut, 'Funeral', and, prior to that, Lou Reed delivered two strong rock eulogies, 'Magic & Loss' and 'Songs for Drella' (a tribute to the late Andy Warhol from both Reed and The Velvet Underground's John Cale). Such is also the case for Victor Krummenacher , the bassist and co-founder of the influential indie-rock band Camper Van Beethoven [...]
