Recommended Show: FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 6, 2009 ABE VIGODA @ DEATH BY AUDIO 49 South 2nd Street Brooklyn, NY 11211 $TBA, 8PM We're not sure how much Abe Vigoda's show is tonight. (It's at Death by Audio; how much can it be? $7? $8 at most?) We are sure that with the Los Angeles band's appearance, it is sure to be a good night at the DIY venue. But don't worry, because it's not the only option for the evening. Check out a list of shows after the jump. Mae @ The Fillmore [...]

by chuck bell There are many fans that have mourned the death of The Afghan Whigs , but as a native of Cincinnati, OH, their legacy is especially important to me on a personal level. Forming in 1986, singer/guitarist Greg Dulli, guitarist Rick McCollum, bassist John Curley and drummer Steve Earle (not that Steve Earle), took the DIY approach to breaking into the music scene in the Queen City. Early on, they formed their own record label, Ultrasuede, on which they would release their debut album, Big [...]

Tim Williams Careful Love Dovecote Records [2009] Fire Note Says: Singer/songwriter gets a band with excellent results! Album Review: I am pretty sure that not many singer/songwriters can cite reconstructive heart surgery as an influence for an album but Brooklyn native Tim Williams not only used his new lease on life but a new relationship and a new admiration for the city of Los Angeles as positive motivators and [...]

While I do a lot of regurgitating of music business information on here I still have a different perspective on the business because I'm not associated with the financial side of things. I'm not in this game to make money. I don't need to forge alliances with anybody. I don't review albums I don't like. If an album is poor I simply won't listen to it let alone write about it. So as an outsider on the fringes looking into an industry I have come up a few opinions! Here are a few steps I'd take to get [...]
Not sure the right description of the Gavin Friday and Friends event at Carnegie Hall last night. An eclectic mix of performers for sure. Like Gavin, it ranged from punk rock to cabaret. The guests ranged from sober to not very. It worked, it didn't work, the girl next to me reading her program wanted to know who this 'Goo- Jee' is anyway, the security guards may or may not have been slightly scared when Dik Evans began making a piercing noise with his guitar and Guggi and Gavin stomped around the stage screamingsnarling at the crowd and each other. [...]

The Internet is a funny place. You can make a soul-felt connection with someone and not even know what they look like. Through this blog, I have "met" many people I like very much, feel connected by our interests in music, and consider friends. One of these has been Merz at Mars Needs Guitars blog. In addition to music, we connected over our shared battle against chronic depression. This past week, he made a decision to end Mars Needs Guitars and go offline. This post is to honor that decision and allow me [...]

Vivaldi Meets Hip-Hop. I stumbled upon Emily Wells as the opening act for Joseph Arthur at Tribeca s new music venue City Winery. She took the stage seeming like some brainy, violin toting grad-student-in-black and then proceeded to completely blow me aw ...
Cincy's Bad Veins - on paper - appear to be a bedroom/studio project for Benjamin Davis (vox/gtrs/keys) and Sebastien Schultz (drums), but the duo has been wowing audiences live with the help of a 1973 reel-to-reel tape player named Irene that augments the sound and fills in where other band members are missing. Their self-titled debut (released in July) is an experimental indie pop album that sounds a bit like Brandon Flowers (Killers) fronting a Sparklehorse/Apples in Stereo/Longwave mash-up. MP3: Bad Veins - "Gold and Warm" [...]
