By Lars Gotrich As soon as a musical movement gets a name, someone is already declaring it dead. Sometimes you wonder about the people who coin the terms; whether they regret the mass categorization of a tight-knit group's creative output. It's almost baffling how quickly "hot new thing" status gets doled out, only to receive backlash, inspire an academic write-up in The New Yorker , experience backlash against the backlash, become loved ironically, and then wind up staunchly defended by those who've been there since the beginning. Because, you know, it's just rock 'n' [...]

My mind is currently blown by the Butthole Surfers, just got home from seeing them live at the first show of Riot Fest and I can't even begin to think straight. So I'm switching gears for a moment and putting this lovely folk music on and sending it to you, m'dears. It's all on the same spectrum, you know. I'll explain that later, just hold that thought. Jane Herships wrote me about a month ago to tell me about her tour in support of the new record Things we Liked To Hold . I'm not sure where [...]

Loving Takes This Course: A Tribute To The Songs Of Kath Bloom is a beautiful two-disc set featuring new covers of Kath Bloom songs by Devendra Banhart, Scout Niblett, Josephine Foster, Corrina Repp, and The Concretes among others. The second disc in the set contains the original recordings by Kath Bloom, an excellent bonus feature that I wish other tributes would include. This review has unfortunately been gathering dust in my draft folder since April, forgotten until I began writing about the new Judee Sill tribute [...]

I guess you can say I have a major weakness when it comes to tribue albums. I love them. Even if I am not all that familiar with the person being immortalized in tribute album form, as is the case here with 'Loving Taking It's Course: A Tribute To The Songs Of Kath Bloom.' Bloom is a singer/songwriter who you can read all about here . The album is really fantastic, and I do believe it did its job - with me anyhow - as I am now inclined to check out some [...]

There are a couple of things that are interesting about the new record from Magnolia Electric Co. Principally is the band's steadfast attachment to a certain sound and ethos. This is best understood as a nearly pure country record; certainly there are moments where the sound diverges towards a rockier place, but this isn't an "alt-country" album in the way that the term is traditionally understood. It's a country record. Put this thing out thirty years ago on a Nashville-based label and we're talking about this band in the same breath as folks like Willie Nelson; a song like "Pretty [...]

The Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter has begun mapping the moon for future landings, and later in the mission will capture images of the Apollo equipment left behind from those fake moon landings (the movie set has been moved from Arizona to Taurus-Littrow), so those of you that subscribe to that theory will be able to shift focus back to Area 51. We left that in Nevada . Moon Baby • Godsmack [...]

Op 26 mei, volgende week dus, brengt Sharon haar debuut Because I Was in Love uit.

Bij The Late Great Daniel Johnston werkte het goed. De aanpak is voor Loving Takes This Course, A Tribute to the Songs of Kath Bloom dezelfde. CD 2 bevat de originelen van Kath [...]

The lovely Marissa Nadler has just released a new album called Little Hells. With that, she gives us some insight into what she's been enjoying lately. Tulsa . Carter Tanton is an amazing songwriter, who is following up his debut Tulsa release with a new record which should be out soon. He has a great voice and writes beautiful sincere songs. myspace.com/tulsamusic Until his new record comes out, everyone should get I Was Submerged. Josephine Foster . First it was Vashti Bunyan . Then, Sibylle Baier . Now another seventies-era songstress is getting some late-game limelight: Conneticut folk singer Kath Bloom receives credit where due on Loving Takes This Course: A Tribute to Kath Bloom , just out on Chapter Music . The two-disc set contains a CD of Kath's originals and a corresponding compilation of covers, coming from the likes of neo-folk artists Devendra Banhart, Bill Callahan and Josephine Foster as well as local ladies Corinna [...]

Saku Soukka Sister Suvi - "Golden" Spent some of yesterday with Merrill Garbus, the woman who is Tune-Yards and one third of Sister Suvi. We took our bikes to the quarry, threw on our walkmen, went down deep. In the gloom we listened to Billy Joel, Pavement, mined copper and zinc. We came out with our jean-jacket pockets full. We biked back to my place, stopping for dark beer and honeycomb toffee. We listened to the Velvet Underground's Loaded and smiled and laughed, window [...]

Sister Suvi - "Golden" . Spent some of yesterday with Merrill Garbus, the woman who is Tune-Yards and one third of Sister Suvi. We took our bikes to the quarry, threw on our walkmen, went down deep. In the gloom we listened to Billy Joel, Pavement, mined copper and zinc. We came out with our jean-jacket pockets full. We biked back to my place, stopping for cinnamon-raisin bagels. We listened to the Velvet Underground's Loaded and smiled and laughed, window open, crows weaving in murders outside my open window, and with our metals spread flat before us we [...]
