The Tractor Tavern in Ballard was the perfect setting to spend a Thursday evening: nothing fancy, just good beer and good music. There were just enough people there to have fun on the dance floor without feeling crowded. Local musician Shane Tutmarc (now solo after old band Doulor) made for a great opening act. He had a strong stage presence with just an acoustic guitar. His eccentric style came through in both his style of clothing and his genre-bending song writing. Traces of folk, blues, and country all came through on his guitar [...]

Cheap Lullaby Records have released a couple of fascinating albums in the last week or so both very different and also superbly crafted. Josh Ottum are from Seattle, USA and have just released 'Like The Season'. It's not just the Beehive that's giving them a rather large thumbs up and unashamed plug, The Seattle Weekly recently stated - "Like the Season is one of the more adventurous musical offerings to come out of Seattle in years". I'm not going to draw comparisons with other bands, Josh Ottum have a pretty distinctive sound and [...]

A couple of Seattle artists have new albums out via Cheap Lullaby Records. Tim Wilson and Ryan Carbary are Ivan & Alyosha(I wonder why they couldn't just be Tim and Ryan?) and their new album is called The Verse, The Chorus. It's getting terrific reviews and some comparisons to a slower variation of the The Shins , which can't be a bad thing. Call me overworked, but it even sounds a little early Beatles-esque to me. Josh Ottum and a rather large group of musicians, including a couple borrowed [...]

I know... another week and Iv'e barely even gotten a mixtape together, but at least I got the images from the past two weeks' posts fixed, right? It's progress- as much as I can muster lately. Tracklisting: The Uglysuit - 1902 Deep Ocean Awesome New Republic - Alleycat Cloud Control - Gold Canary Daniel Wesley [...]

You know the drill, free music you need to hear (and legal too, for whoever it was that filed a complaint against my blog ;). Themselves & Why? - Canada (MP3) Two Anticon heavyweights combine for this stunning track that you probably should have picked up by now (Pitchfork was on top of this song this morning, of course). Like the first single, "This Blackest Purse," from the upcoming WHY? album, "Canada" is mellow, but no less beguiling or strange than anything either band has provided [...]
It wasn't intentional... we swear! It just kind of happened that this weekend's Friday Mixtape turned out to be perhaps our best one ever. As always, we have sought to cap off your week with a stellar mix of the week's best new singles, remixes, and covers, along with mp3s from some up-and-comers you just might want to check out. However, this particular one is just a little more special... and jam-packed. Just take a look for yourself... "Retreat! Retreat!" (Live at Radio City Music Hall) by 65daysofstatic [...]

I'm two years old as a blogger today. It's my Blogday. My Bloggiversary*. Whatever you want to call it. A Thursday in midwinter. For me, one of the most tedious type of post is the navel gazing 'blogging about blogging' variety. But it is my party and I'll be narcissistic and self-indulgent if I want to. Truth be told, I don't even like the word – blog. Sounds lumpy and clumsy and trivial. While certainly trivial, I don't think the genre necessarily deserves a moniker that sounds a bit like a bodily function. Still and all, better than [...]

I still read several of the UK music press publications every month, and have built up a personal list of music sites, that have reliably led me to discover highly enjoyable new music on a regular basis. Along with that, one of the perks of running this music website, is the material from promoters, agencies, and bands themselves, that come this way. I select new music to share on a simple criteria, either I like it (another perk), it complements the live material, or finally, it adds to the diversity of music on Beehive Candy. [...]

My backyard is bigger than your backyard ... Here in Northern Wisconsin, enjoying Day 3 of my prolonged Memorial Day vacation, along with what seems like half of Chicago. It always irks me that this town, a summer "resort town" if you will, turns into "Little Chicago" on the weekends with all the vacationers from Milwaukee and Chicago coming up to visit their cabins and hit the lakes for some fishing or jet skiing. It does help infuse some younger blood into the bar scene that is usually [...]

Seattle band The Republic combine Pedro the Lion intricate songwriting and Death Cab rocky sweetness to craft power poppy songs like "Rock Out" (above in video form) and the soft whispery songs "One Last Mistake" (MySpace). On Thursday, April 30th, The Republic will take the Tractor stage with fellow Seattle-ites Josh Ottum and Aqueduct and we're pleased as punch that The Republic gave us a pair of tickets to the show to give to one lucky imaginary reader. To enter, email us at tig @ three imaginary girls.com with your name and the subject line "FananaRepublic" [...]

In case you've not noticed: SquirrelFood got an upgrade this week! It's not complete, there are bits here and there that need tweeks, but I like it better than the old brown, don't you? I've also added the SquirrelFood twitter feed ( follow me here ) to the sidebar- you might find extra downloads, links, and stories there. I'm stoked about the new BTE in this week's mix, as well as DMB and Streets. Yeah, looks like Mike Skinner 's fed up with labels and albums, and is just giving away stuff he creates via his twitter [...]

indie-pop // experimental Josh Ottum, a Seattle-based musician and songwriter, has been making his tiny-bedroom-music for 4 years before composing his debut album Like The Season (2007). To put it in his own words, Like The Season is a twelve song journey into the hallways, bedrooms, dining rooms and garages of popular music. Josh's "The Easy Way Out" evolves from sweet, coherent and easy-on-the-ears harmonies to a rhythmically driven complex production. With layered arrangements of multiple drums, repetitive piano, catchy horn lines and quirky phrasing Josh builds "The Easy Way Out" [...]
