I got to see Judson Claiborne for two nights in Seattle. And you didn't. If I sound a bit like a child brandishing my ice cream cone while you have none, well… this is how I felt after hearing this Chicago-based group play both the Can Can at Pike Place and The Sunset Tavern in Ballard. Remarkably, both shows were sparsely attended. Whether this was due to weather or the weeknight, it didn't matter; the music they shared felt like a treat just for me. [...]
Relatively slow week coming up in Chicago, at least in terms of shows I'm interested in seeing. The two best shows (for me, at least) are both on Thursday - Future of The Left at Bottom Lounge and The Jet Age at Beat Kitchen.* That said, I personally only need a couple of good shows this week, as I'm headed down to Austin on Friday for this year's Fun Fun Fun Fest . More on that later in the week, but for now I leave you with one word... Danzig [...]

One surprising aspect of life in Chicago is the easy juxtaposition of suburban picket fence-hood with lively night life. A stroll down a typical city street reveals picturesque houses and brownstones peacefully - at least to my eyes - co-existing with pubs, restaurants and dynamic live music spaces. Schubas Tavern , which sits on the corner of North Southport and West Belmont Avenues in East Lakeview, is one such establishment. It began life in the early 1900s as a tap house for the Schlitz Brewery, and still proudly serves the [...]

This Toad Session has been a wee while coming, but frankly I think it's fucking superb. The videos have turned out wonderfully, Neil and Gav have done an amazing job with the sound, Fee and Dylan have taken some great photos. I'm happy as a pig in shit, quite frankly. Johnny Lynch (Mr. Pictish Trail) had plenty of time to kill, so we drank some beer, took our time and talked a monumental amount of shite. The podcast is really strong this time around, I think. We talk a lot but I think it's pretty decent stuff for the most [...]

As we all celebrate MLK's B-day and get prepared for the big day tomorrow, DC seems to be pulling out all the stops tonight. First there's an inaugural show at the 9:30 Club with the infamous Beastie Boys, Citizen Cope, Sheryl Crow, and Justin Jones. Over at the Warner Theatre the legendary Jay-Z kicks the night into gear. The Rock and Roll Hotel has Frightened Rabbit, Arc In Round, and David Karsten Daniels. The big show is at the Sold Out Black Cat Inaugural Ball featuring Andrew Bird, Ted Leo, Tortoise, Waco Brothers, Eleventh [...]

Ted Leo and Andrew Bird are set to celebrate the inauguration of Barack Obama as US President with a show in Washington D.C. the night before. ' Big Shoulders Ball: Chicago Celebrates Change ' is set to take place on January 19 at the Black Cat venue in the city. The event will also see performances by Waco Bros. , Eleventh Dream Day , Jon Langford , Sally Timms , David 'Honeyboy' Edwards , Ken Vandermark , Freakwater , Icy Demons [...]
The 56th Presidential Inauguration will feature plenty of change and hope, along with sure-to-be-classy performances from Aretha Franklin, Yo-Yo Ma, and clarinet player Anthony McGill . But for those looking to celebrate Barack Obama's takeover with some of the finest lefty indie-rockers out there, there's (even more) hope. Ted Leo and author and journalist Thomas Frank (The Baffler , What's the Matter With Kansas? ) scribe are the newest names added to the Big Shoulders Ball: Chicago Celebrates Change, which is brought to [...]

Judson Claiborne is an interesting act that delivers wholesome tunes and music best listened to with the breeze of a warm summer's day. This Claiborne, however, has no immediate relation with successful fashion designer Liz and is actually the acting stage name given to Christopher C. Salveter by his father. Salveter claims that on a personal level the name means "rebirth into a greater consciousness" which is rather deep, it definitely sounds cooler than the Hebrew derived "gift of God" that I get to tote. His debut album, Before Midnight Scholar , will [...]
