L.A. art-pop ensemble Fol Chen warmed up for a trip across the pond on Thursday by playing to a nearly full house at the Echo. Frontman Adam Goldman (aka Samuel Bing, pictured above) leads his charges on a seven-day, six-show tour of the U.K. beginning Monday. Thursday's bill almost qualified as a sonic experiment — besides the headliner's stew of twitchy electro mixed with horns, drums and guitar, the night featured strong supporting sets by Karin Tatoyan , Wait. Think. Fast and [Post-foetus] . Photographer Kristy Sparow captured some of Fol Chen's [...]

[Twenty-five years ago today, Bruce Springsteen released "Born in the U.S.A." Salute something, even if it's Annie Leibovitz's album cover.] Around the clubs, for folks who don't have tickets the to the big Green Day show at the Music Box @ Fonda, or who aren't going to brave the elements for Video Games Live at the Greek Theatre, or who won't drive to Pomona for the Juan MacLean and the Field : You know you're a buzz band when you have two gigs in Los [...]

The Minor Canon (photo credit: Brett Rubin) Not the best week in recent memory for touring bands, but there are plenty of great local bands playing this week. Monday 6/1/09 [Pick of the Night] Pontiak / Magic Lantern / Pocahaunted / Dog @ The Blue [...]

[Notebook entries, once sentence apiece ...] Wolfmother [visit the site to sign up for the download of the new single "Back Round"] sure was great a couple Fridays ago in the Natural History Museum's Mammals Hall (imagine that), but I was surprised that the set started and ran so late, since the museum's First Fridays events usually wrap up by around 10. ... Speaking of Australians, I hear that SXSW buzz-makers the Temper Trap are signing to Glassnote [...]

Seasons Karin Tatoyan I took a bunch more photos and you can see them all here at my FLICKR.

Song Pontiak ~ " Honey " myspace plays: 720 mp3 download (via thrilljockey ) Pontiak comes with a psychedelic, fuzzed out, grungy guitar, and heavy slow drum sound. When I first heard this, I thought they were going to be from Austin. I was surprised to find out that the three Carney brothers are from rural Virginia. Maker was released on Tuesday. [...]

Last week ended up being pretty busy. I saw the Radar Bros. and Le Switch last Sunday at Kid Rockers at the Echo. If you've got a kid (not that I do), I highly recommend the event. Good fun. Then I saw a little bit of Nico Stai on Monday. On Wednesday I braved the crowd for The Pains of Being Pure at Heart and White Denim at Spaceland. The Pains of Being Pure at Heart have some good songs, but they're not that interesting live. White Denim is fun to see live, but don't really have great songs yet. [...]

Fol Chen Part I: John Shade, Your Fortune's Made Asthmatic Kitty Records [2009] Fire Drills Review: Fol Chen is your good old fashioned quirky indie rock band from California, that features appearances by Karin Tatoyan and Rafter, along with members of The Liars, Castanets, and Let's Go Sailing. The group has catchy male/female dueling vocals and dance pop songs that are instantly infectious. The record has many different elements to it, such as samples, electronic beats [...]

Charlie Louvin Plays Spaceland on Saturday With the exception of Benji Hughes (who was very entertaining) and Merle Haggard (see previous post) there hasn't been much live music for me so far in 2009. That's going to change this week.... Monday 2/2/09 [Recommended] Le Switch / Whispertown 2000 / Wrong Way Driver / The World Record @ Spaceland (Free) – You should know by now that Le Switch is one of my favorite local bands. Song Waldeck ~ " Why Did We Fire the Gun " mp3 download (via triplejaysus ) Rainy Days put me in the mood to hear some downtempo brushes on a snare. Waldeck is out of Vienna, Austria and the sound is like Zero 7 and the Thievery Corporation started recording a song for a 70's Bond film. Klaus Waldeck's got skills, and the voice on the song is Joy Malcolm . [...]

Mercury Rev Plays El Rey on Tuesday All in all, given the proximity to the holidays, it's a really good week for shows. I've been scattered and busy, and haven't seen many shows. But I did see Oasis in Las Vegas on December 6th. I've never considered myself a huge fan, but they sounded great. The Pearl Theater at the Palms is a great place to see a show. With a capacity of about 2,800, there's not a bad seat in the house. Great sightlines and sound. I only saw enough of [...]
