Alaskan singer/songwriter Kate Earl received acclaim for her 2005 debut album Fate Is the Hunter with an affinity for personal, sharply observant and finely crafted songs. Drawing comparisons to Fiona Apple and Rickie Lee Jones, Earl's dark and deeply dreamy compositions display an innate soulfulness that remains on display for her more R+B/pop-influenced self-titled sophomore effort due November 3 (Universal Motown). Working with producers Louis Biancanello and Sam Watters, Earl brings a sleek pop sheen to her newer songs, by and large leaving the acoustic sound behind for a brighter, bouncier and more radio-friendly feel. For [...]

[Double-barreled birthday wishes go out Saturday to Tegan and Sara. It's Jarvis Cocker's birthday too. Now for your busy weekend, starting with two festivals:] Head east: The third annual Clean Air Clear Stars festival goes off at Pappy & Harriet's Pioneertown Palace, with a heaping helping of excellent psych-rock tonight, Saturday and Sunday. Support global cooling. Head south: For family fun and a side order of good local music, there's the Lobster Festival at the Port of Los [...]

A few days before my last post we pulled up stakes and moved. It was only about 120 blocks south of where we lived but it's true what they say: 120 blocks could be 120 thousand miles; you still have to pack. A few days after we moved, my Mom came to visit. Therein lies the reason why there's been so little activity here at F45 for the past few weeks. Been a lot of musical activity, though. The new place warranted a new (and smaller) piano, so my boy is now playing a Charles Walters upright instead [...]

[Happy birthday, Tony Kanal. As for you, Los Angeles: My, what a big show list you have ...] Conor Oberst & the Mystic Valley Band , who were gorgeous in the summer evening air at Sunset Junction, hang around town for another show, tonight's at the Echoplex, rather curiously billed with Swedish rockers Dungen . ... Fresh off opening Green Day's big show Tuesday at the Forum, Franz Ferdinand (some of whom apparently adjourned that show and caught the Dead Weather at the Wiltern) [...]
Kate Earl makes her way to the national radio waves with her self-titled album.

Joe Pernice Appears at McCabe's on Saturday Anybody make it to Sunset Junction this weekend? Any highlights? I did make it to Elvis Costello last week. I read a glowing review in the LA Times, but I agreed with my concert companion when he said "This is more soulless than Disney's Country Bear Jamboree." In addition to wrecking others' classics, he even wrecked some of his own. This is a pretty fantastic week to be a music fan in LA. The only problem is all the [...]

Welcome to another weekly installment of the Friday Mixtape. I really can't think of anything to say about this week's mix- just let it stand on its own. So, download it, listen to it, and leave some comments about it- if you like. Tracklisting: Felt - Protagonists Kate Earl - Melody Kings Of Convenience - Mrs Cold Other [...]
In the same vein as Australian songbird Lenka , to whom we introduced you earlier this spring, comes singer/songwriter Kate Earl . This beauty hailing from Alaska, who happens to be Tommy Mottola 's latest protegee, has just released her sophomore self titled album on Universal Republic, and has already been compared to the likes of Feist , Cat Power , or Lykke Li . Her charm works magic on her latest video, "Melody" , the first single to be taken of the album. Catch it after the jump. [...]
Filed under: New Music , Exclusive When there's an Alaskan in the room, it's pretty hard not to ask what they think of Sarah Palin. So, when rising singer Kate Earl stopped by the Spinner offices, we couldn't help but bring up the now ex-governor. "She really trashed my state!" the Anchorage native told us. Once listeners hear her soulful voice, jazzy instrumentals and catchy hooks, though, Earl's music is bound to help her repair the image of the 49th state. After she let us hear snippets from [...]
We've had a soft spot for Kate Earl since her MySpace heyday. "Someone To Love" was the greatest Fiona Apple song that's not actually Fiona Apple's. This time around she is opting for a commercial sound, probably due to the goading of Universal Music. It still sounds good laid under her unique vocals. Watch out, Kate Earl is resurfacing ! Alaska-to-L.A.'s Kate Earl appears to have left the sensitive singer/songwriter thing pretty much in the dust of late. But since most don't know her fine 2005 debut album Fate Is the Hunter , we guess we can understand why Earl's newer, slicker, beat-soaked sound - directed by manager Tommy Mottola ( aka , ex-Mr. Mariah Carey, ex-Sony Music Chief) - makes that play for the soft, comfort of the middle, particularly on first pop/soul single (and head- scratchingly gratuitous video) "Melody". We're hoping that tracks other than this confectionary fluff get some [...]

Kate Earl is a sultry songstress, whose parents taught her the value of hard work, a trait which is evident in her music. But what is she really like? We thought it would be fun to catch up with Kate the week she releases her album and have her answer Buzznet's most burning questions and share a few personal stories. Think you know Kate Earl? Buzznet: Do you have a morning bathroom routine? What does it [...]

[Getting back into town today after a little road trip. Thanks to my pinch-bloggers the past few days; happy birthday to Stewart Copeland; and here's a full plate of music goodies from which to sample tonight:] My trip to the heartland yielded a good read or two, including this Riverfront Times interview with Son Volt's Jay Farrar on his band's new album "American Central Dust." The quintet plays the Wiltern tonight with the Cowboy Junkies . ... The "Also I Like to Rock" free concert [...]

The Very Best Play the Echoplex on Thursday This is one of those weeks where so much seems to be happening on Wednesday and Thursday... Monday 7/13/09 [Pick of the Night] Last American Buffalo / Avi Buffalo / Evan Way / Greg Jong @ Silverlake Lounge (Free) – Get there by 10 to see Avi Buffalo. Evan Way doesn't have the show listed on his Myspace page, so I'm not sure if he's still on the bill. [...]
This comes as a surprise because Kate Earl has been in my collection for a couple of years. In fact, Fate Is A Hunter spawned two hits in our heart - the Fiona Apple drab of "Someone To Love" and the DUI anthem "Officer." But, she might be pulling some stops from the Joss Stone autobiography by re-positioning herself as a new and/or fresh artist with Introducing Kate Earl. The Alaska native, and hopefully non-Sarah Palin friend, is all over iTunes with this EP. It's faster than her usual stuff from the debut album, but still [...]
Australian lo-fi garage rock band An Horse is back in the States and hitting up a few dates. Inspired by a grammatically incorrect sweater, An Horse is duo Kate Cooper (guitar/vox) and Damon Cox (drums). They've been on Letterman, on tour w/ Death Cab and are now skipping quickly back through the States. I saw An Horse this past January w/ Appleseed Cast in Chapel Hill. Though that combo seemed to fit on paper, the crowd was really a bunch of punk rock kids who somehow liked The Appleseed Cast from their affiliation w/ The Militia [...]
