He has some heavyweights in his corner (read: Pete Yorn), but the singer-songwriter bewilderingly known as WAZ simply fails to pack a punch. Perhaps future albums will justify the hype, but These Bright Lights , with its vapid lyrics and store-bought emotions, is most notable for its sheer lack of profundity. Reminds us of: Alexi Murdoch | Kelley Stoltz | Badly Drawn Boy WAZ : ( Label | MySpace ) Waz these bright lights

T he Fresh & Onlys shambles barefoot through Summer of Love-style guitar and tambourine jams, strewing lyrical oddities and flower garlands along the path that leads, if not to where Syd Barrett lives, at least to Dan Treacy's neighborhood. Led by Tim Cohen, ex of the underrated Black Fiction, and now sometime supporter of Ty Segall, the band channels the zonked hippie overload of the 13th Floor Elevators and the lo-fi whimsies of Treacy's Television Personalities. Shayde Sartin and Wymond Miles, both of the extended Skygreen Leopards family, join in [...]
[Locals Only is a regular feature where the Stranger Dance staff focus on the best and brightest of the San Francisco Bay Area music scene. Feel free to hit us up with any information on local bands, musicians, shows, and other music-related events and projects.] This week boasts several unique events: Mark Eitzel performing American Music Club at the Red Devil Lounge, a BYOB rock show at Flux53 in Oakland (presented by our buds over at Kata Rokkar), the Proclaimers (!) at Bottom of [...]

This week, our podcast features The Mumlers , a San Jose band whose sophomore album, Don't Throw Me Away , comes out today on Galaxia Records. The group's members were initially intended to be guest contributors on a solo recording by lead singer Will Sprott. Instead, they've united to become a formidable band full of talented musicians, whose first album, 2008's Thickets & Stitches , channeled their skills into a loose collection of folk, rock, blues and soul. Since that album's release, The Mumlers have been supporting the record with [...]
This Sunday night at The Knockout , Chuck Prophet offers a sneak preview performance of his upcoming album ¡Let Freedom Ring! , out October 27 on Yep Roc Records . Prophet will be performing the new album with the band that recorded it, which includes Ernest "Boom Boom" Carter, who drummed on Born to Run . It's a special one-night-only performance fans will surely want to check out. Says Yep Roc about the new record: Chuck Prophet got more than [...]

Readers who are into poster art and anything free: make no Saturday afternoon plans. A collection of local poster artists will be showing their work at Bottom of the Hill. For free. Many of the designs lean toward the macabre. Among the work presented will be David D'Andrea 's finely detailed and animal-centric posters for groups like Queens of the Stone Age and Chrome, and John Howard , whose work for the Fillmore, Great American Music Hall, Sleepy Sun and Kelley Stoltz brings complementary color schemes to the indie crowd in a very surreal way. [...]

The Dry Spells , with their layered electric and acoustic instrumentation, are one of the Bay Area's many contributions to the exploding psych-folk scene. Tracks like "Batwood" begin with plenty of rhythm and structure and devolve into a flurry of guitar riffs and violin. Other songs feature solid backbone and somber tambourine. Can tambourine be somber? This one is - under searing guitar melodies. The Dry Spells - "Lost Daughter" As with all self-respecting indie/folk/psych/rock/acoustic /electric/hybrid outfits, The Dry Spells feature one member with a biblical name, one beard and [...]

The 13th Annual Mission Creek Music Festival kicks off today in San Francisco with some pretty exciting names. Today we have The Aerosols with Dream Date, My First Earthquake , and Sonny & The Sunsets at Knockout, Collosal Yes with The Love Dimension , 123 Picnic , and Nick Jaina at El Rio, darwinsbitch [...]

Bart Davenport - "Jon Jon" There's a lot of great stuff happening as part of this year's Mission Creek Music Festival , but few can compete with the FREE show happening this Saturday, July 18th, from 11am-8pm at the Jerry Garcia Amphitheater in McLaren Park (40 John F Shelley Drive at Mansell Street). There's a staggeringly-good lineup of bands, and the MCMF folks promise "DJs, local indie vendors, designers, fashion, and a variety of food carts" as well. Rubies - "Stand [...]

An argument could be made that the world is being bombarded with TOO many festival choices. It's a given that should you grace (or live in approximation to) a metropolis, you're going to find at least one festival that draws your attention, takes your money, and drives you to get out the doors and into the crowds. The purpose of these festivals, no matter the impression, is to unite fans and artists into one large consortium--it's a chance for a laundry list of your favorites to play in one place during designated time frames. As it [...]
Friday May 22: Bart Davenport, Kelley Stoltz, Hot Lunch, Big Eagle @ Cafe du Nord When friends play shows together, the unusual happens - take this show as an example. Kelley Stoltz 's frontman Sean Coleman contributed to Bart Davenport's Palaces , freshly out on Antenna Farm Records (Oakland), which can only mean some live accompaniment is in place for Friday's show (9:30pm, $12). Bart Davenport - Jon Jon The bill has its variety, [...]

Crocodiles Arlene Grocery New York City, NY 10/25/03 CMJ used to have its theme nights among those visiting for the conference. Wednesday: warm up, Thursday: secret show, Friday: killer sets, Saturday: the mad scramble before heading back to college. My year was 1997 but this particular CMJ Saturday in 2003 felt all the same. After catching the Waco Brothers and Paul Burch in Brooklyn, awaiting PW Long to never eventually show at the Continental , and Damon Che to put me on the list for the [...]

The Moore Brothers' new record Aptos has been out since the beginning of March. That's a very short time, except for music bloggers that are now covering releases that are coming out in June and July. Clearly The Moore Brothers didn't hire any of the seemingly hundreds of pr companies cropping up to promote to music blogs or they would have been all over Elbo.ws and Hype by now whether they deserved it or not. Deserve it they do. The new record has received great reviews from a few high profile online outlets [...]
