In the Book Notes series, authors create and discuss a music playlist that relates in some way to their recently published book. Hos, Hookers, Call Girls & Rent Boys collects stories, poems, and essays by sex workers. Compiled by David Henry Sterry and RJ Martin, Jr., the book organizes this collection of refreshingly genuine and brutally honest writings by category (love, life, money, etc.). The New York Times wrote of the book: "From the unappealing title, you might think this is a truly trashy [...]
The dudes from NINJASONIK just whipped this video out with help from Director NICHOLAS CHATFIELD-TAYLOR. It's a classic NINJASONIK take on the already classic MATT & KIM hit 'Daylight'.

The CMJ day parties really kick into gear today. I'm sure I'm forgetting something on this list. I left off a paid early show ($10 at Santos Party House), and CMJ's official Happy Hour at Brooklyn Brewery, which you need a badge to get into; however, I did include Spin's party, which you had to RSVP for even though that list is now closed. CHOUETTE DAY PARTY AT CAKE SHOP (Noon-7PM): Forest Fire (5th), Sian Alice Group (4th), Juliana Barwick (3rd), Theo Angell (2nd), High Life (1st) PLANETARY GROUP/FUTURE [...]
The CMJ Music Marathon and Film Festival invades New York City this week. Here's the latest from PopMatters' writers on the beat. Emmanuel & the Fear The Living Room, New York City It takes a lot of ambition to write rock songs that could serve as the score for a dramatic opera, but Brooklyn's Emmanuel & the Fear do not shy away from it, nor do they fail to live up to the task. Intricate arrangements for an 11-piece rock orchestra are the driving force behind this band, which provide the groundwork for passionately sung lyrics. After...

Recommended Show: FRIDAY, OCTOBER 23, 2009 SCHOOL OF SEVEN BELLS @ MUSIC HALL OF WILLIAMSBURG 66 North 6th Street Brooklyn, NY 11211 $20, 8PM With this being the start of the weekend and CMJ still going on, there should be some good shows tonight. There are some pretty good ones, but nothing so amazing as to be obvious. However, School of Seven Bells performance at Music Hall of Williamsburg tonight should be pretty memorable--and just off the beaten path enough that badge holders MIGHT be able to get in without too much hassle. [...]

T is the season to be jolly that the Oscar-hopeful films are finally hitting theaters (at least in the U.S. -- we'll have to wait a few more months for them to cross the Rio Grande and crawl their way into South American theaters), and the predictions are finally getting juicy (see my first batch here ). Of course, every year a solid Oscar contender or two gets left out in the cold: Jack Nicholson for Batman . Glenn Close for Reversal Of Fortune . Juliette Binoche for Blue . Nicole Kidman for [...]
So by now you've seen the EPIC Matt and Kim video (by Taylor Cohen and Otto Arsenault) that won a VMA, and now it's been nominated once again! VOTE FOR IT HERE! GO MATT AND KIM, GO! BRAND NEW VIDEO! Also, here's a BRAND NEW Matt and Kim video that's short, sweet, and energetic, just like everything else they do. :)
A few notes on artist and songwriter-related subjects: Martin Stenmarck 's upcoming album, I Septemberland , features five songs from the team at Swedish music publishing and production company TEN (A*Teens, Amy Diamond, Erik Hassle). In this case, though, the songs don't seem to be by the Tysper/Grizzly/Mack team (who in addition to the aforementioned successes have also been the creators of Industry's "My Baby's Waiting" and VV Brown's "Shark In The Water") but rather by Elof Loelv and Kim Wennerström , who also worked with Erik Hassle and produced Malena [...]

CMJ released the band schedule for its 2009 Music Marathon & Film Festival yesterday, which is about as good a sign of fall hitting New York as the return of apple cider at Greenmarket. The festival runs from Oct. 20 - Oct. 24 and includes various venues throughout the city, and the list of featured artists would probably take all four days to read through. But skimming the selection reveals a fairly equal distribution of well-known acts like Atlas Sound and Deer Tick , anonymous locals (including krautrock-y Jeff Buckley-channelers Pocketknife), twenty-two bands who [...]
The press release below doesn't actually list all the acts performing at CMJ this year, so you're probably better off checking out cmj.sched.org to get a true idea of what's happening during this year's marathon. Of course, sched.org is a little confusing too and it doesn't list unofficial events and day parties (as far as I know), so you'll have to wait a little bit longer for info to trickle out from the blogs and other unofficial sources. Lastly, even though the press release says the schedule is "final", you can pretty much bet that things will shift [...]
Hey, whaddya know! Congrats to the homies Matt & Kim for winning a 'Breakthrough Video' VMA one Kanye fit ago. Big ups to Taylor Cohen and Otto Arsenault for directing the vid, although I've seen a few homeless dudes direct the same thing minus the expensive cameras and supportive fanbase. Hey Kim, next time I see ya I'ma buy YOU a drank. If you forgot what those privates looked like, hit it after the jump. Ninjasonik - Daylight (Matt & Kim remix) The Hood Internet - Good Ol' Fashion Rump [...]
OMG! We were so busy partying and celebrating that we forgot to post this online! It's better late than never... MATT AND KIM WON A VMA! THIS IS SERIOUSLY FUCKING AMAZING! Who could have guessed that when we put out our first record that three years later MATT AND KIM would be on top of the world taking home 'BREAKTHROUGH VIDEO' at the MTV VMAS!!??!? It happened! The video for 'LESSONS LEARNED' as directed by TAYLOR COHEN and OTTO ARSENAULT (the same team behind [...]
Happy Autumnal Equinox! I can't believe that we are entering the fall season, how did that happen? Fortunately there are many shows to occupy our time and to keep us from thinking about the upcoming cold weather that right around the corner. On Thursday I hope you got you code to see Polyphonic Spree at the Paradise. If you didn't, there's always uke master Melvern Taylor at Toad or you can go to the Middle East to catch Hollywood starlet turned to rocker, Juliette Lewis. On Friday, there are lots of great choices and you can't go wrong with any [...]
Three things you need for a successful awards show. A great host. Great performances. Just a touch of controversy. Sadly this holy trinity has been missing of late in the awards that we would concern ourselves with – MTV, The Meteors, Brits. At best you can hope for the odd glimpse, usually one or two memorable live showings and some musician making a fool of him or herself (who are we kidding, they're always blokes). The VMAs 09, as well all know by now, saw dear Kanye West return to his default setting after last year's show stealing performance of [...]

Submission by Tim Myers It is hard to take this Kanye West episode seriously as it involves A) The VMA's B) Taylor Swift Stuff like this happens every year at the VMA's just to grab headlines. Past VMA's featuring a slovenly Britney Spears performance, a Tommy Lee and Kid Rock fist fight, and Li'l Kim fresh out of prison still clad in her orange jumpsuit hardly make the VMA's seem like a forum for civility. Also, Kanye West is prone [...]
In all the insane internet noise we've seen over the Kanye controversy at last night's VMA awards: one question remains unanswered: was the controversy staged? Lord knows MTV has a history of manufacturing controversial moments, and the VMAs, one of MTV's signature events, has often been a prime vehicle for that. There hasn't been a major controversial moment like this in a number of years, and certainly since blogs, Twitter, and social media became a major force in entertainment coverage. For those who want a [...]
