Have a look at Jamie T 's new video for 'The Man's Machine', a song from his album 'King and Queens'. It features Jamie driving a golf cart somewhat recklessly (possibly in Australia?), palm trees, and rather incongruous bits of film from the Running of the Bulls in Pamplona, Spain, among other subjects. Not as bouncy or humorous as 'Chaka Demus' but still engaging. The video is being released in advance of the forthcoming 'The Man's Machine' EP due in late November. Click here to view the [...]

Give the Drummer Some's 6 Favorite Downloads from the MP3 Blogosphere This past week your hard-working Miner dove deep into the inky dark of music's lost history and came up cradling some shimmering gems: Rainful Days appears to be the only record ever released by West Sussex folk siren Maria Barton. The album came out on the tiny Airship label in 1980. ••• More stellar music recorded on British soil comes from Johnny and June Carter Cash, whose live performance at the London Palladium in '75 was released , replete [...]
The press release below doesn't actually list all the acts performing at CMJ this year, so you're probably better off checking out cmj.sched.org to get a true idea of what's happening during this year's marathon. Of course, sched.org is a little confusing too and it doesn't list unofficial events and day parties (as far as I know), so you'll have to wait a little bit longer for info to trickle out from the blogs and other unofficial sources. Lastly, even though the press release says the schedule is "final", you can pretty much bet that things will shift [...]
This is far and away the best Tears for Fears album (really, by this point, a Roland Orzabal album), and moreover, it's one of the very best, and most overlooked, albums of the 1990's. While previous and subsequent TFF albums were always blessed with standout tracks (Songs from the Big Chair being the best of the rest), this one is flat-out brilliant. It plays like a concept album, with a
In one of those once in a lifetime opportunities, The King of Spain sat down with one of my heroes, the one the only Tom Waits on QTV today. I have no idea what Jian asked him - aside from this one question - What's Tom Waits vision of hell?" Tom Waits: "Well...there's probably no place to sit down. " - but in honor of the occasion I wanted to post some videos. The Day After Tomorrow (live) Bottom of the World [...]
Leonard Cohen gave fans a scare Saturday night when he crumpled into a heap onstage in Spain following a stoic performance of " Bird on the Wire " (see video below). Cohen's publicist has since reported that he was battling a tough case of food poisoning, and music lovers everywhere are relieved to know that he is recovering well. But the news got me thinking about older artists who are still on the road bringing their music to the masses, despite the physical stresses involved. Touring is a grueling experience, as any musician who has spent even [...]

Many people have been inquiring what the BeatElectric crew actually look like. It seems to be a real point of interest, which is a shame, as the blog was supposed to be about rare dance records and not our perceived celebrity status, which doesn't really mean anything to us as we are millionaires who live outside and above the normal restrictions and tier structure of society, but seeing as so many of you asked I'm posting the above picture of Kelley B, taken the other night at our two year anniversary party roller dance jam. This is a rare [...]
We're back with another 100 Greatest list, and this time, to coincide with our World Music Festival event, we've chosen the 100 Greatest World Music Albums of All Time . "World music" is an exceptionally wide-ranging term. Does world music mean music that's not in English? Does a world music artist have to create music from his/her own particular country or ethnic background? What about "big name" world artists (like Enya, Celtic Woman, Bob Marley) who have had mainstream Top 40 hits? In the end, we came up with the following criteria: [...]

Words By Devin Chanda Football talk dominates the headlines now (especially with Vick landing in Philly ), but across the pond, the coming weekend brings about the dawn of the futbol season in England. Just last week, the top divisions in both France and Germany also kicked off, with the likes of those in Spain and other countries to follow suit as August winds down. Besides battling for the championships in their respective leagues, clubs around Europe will also be vying to stay in the top four (or top three in [...]
Tourists seem like an unlikely muse for great music -- the fannypacks and sunburns generally don't inspire anyone, much less rock stars. However, Yahoo! Music has compiled a list of "30 Great Vacation Songs Not Including the Go-Gos' 'Vacation.'" The post takes the reader through a sonic journey that includes Morocco (Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young's "Marrakesh Express"), Cambodia (Dead Kennedys' "Holiday in Cambodia") and -- of course -- Kokomo (The Beach Boys' song of the same name). However, some of the titles don't mention any place in particular and just celebrate the freedom to pack up and go (B-52s' [...]

September 5th, 1968. Spain: Traffic jams built up in Madrid as thousands of Spaniards got out of their cars to stare at the night sky, where for sixty-five minutes a pyramid shaped object glowed. An air force jet reached a height of 9½ miles; the pilot reported the object was far above him. Radar screens showed the object to be 18 miles high. May 19th, 1957. Victoria, Australia: A large silvery object about 8 miles high [...]
A Brief History of Love , the debut album from Big Pink, the next great U.K. buzz band, is due out in Northa America on Sept. 22, but the band won't be hitting these shores for a full tour until two months later in November, when they set out on their debut North American tour. The Big Pink hit venues across the U.S. in Canada from early November to early December, starting in Seattle and ending in Philly. They have a lengthy European and Japanese tour to tend to first. Here are the tour dates: [...]
I'm going to see the Rural Alberta Advantage on Thursday at the Horseshoe---with more than 50 of my friends, apparently. This will be their CD release for Hometowns, an album they put out independently in early 2008, but have no re-released properly on Saddle Creek. Supporting acts that night are Hooded Fang and a newer band called The Wilderness of Manitoba, all from right here in Toronto. Promises to be a great night, and will likely be a sold out, so get your ticket soon! Advance tickets are on sale for $12 at Soundscapes, Rotate This, the Horseshoe front bar, [...]
![[DUBKEY003] Manwel T – Virtual Dub (2009)](http://cache.elbo.ws/posts/1884781_lg.jpg)
ARTIST: Manwel T The elements of the first eight tracks on Manwel T's second dub album were made available on the web for remixing purposes by Alpha & Omega (UK), Dubmatix (Canada), Hotdrop (Spain) and The Slackers (USA). A quick search on the net would provide you with many different versions of these tunes by all kinds of remixers. The last four tracks on the set were sent to Manwel T for remixing by Soul Remedy (Belgium) and Urban Dub (UK). The styles vary from [...]
Gorillaz - Clint Eastwood (2001) Dir. Jamie Hewlett & Pete Candeland #1 won't be revealed until tomorrow... sorry. But today I'm giving love to a producer who just missed the cut. Dan the Automator has made some classic albums in his day, but his recent absence from music making has him out of the Top 5. I first caught wind of Dan when he teamed up with legendary Hip Hop producer Prince Paul to form Handsome Boy Modeling School in 1999. It is one of the strangest ideas for an album ever. They got their name [...]

[ I've been meaning to post this for ages, but better late than never. From the April 1979 issue of The Magazine Formerly Known as Stereo Review, here's the most semi-legendary album review I ever wrote. I'll explain that statement and more when you've finished with the piece, so please read on. ] TONIO K.: MINDFOOD L adies and gentlemen -- I give you....the greatest album ever recorded! I can hear you already -- nitpickers, musicologists, the small-minded, [...]
