Having just listened to their current album 'The Monstrous Vanguard' I have to say Kittens Ablaze deserve all the praise and recognition they have received to date. OK here's the setting. I have some sort of virus and am running a fever. I am feeling sorry for myself, and am not really in the mood for music. If I want to hear anything it needs to be gentle and soothing, however there is an album in my inbox & I feel obliged to give at least one song a listen. Half an hour later I am [...]

[these amazing photos were taken for nyctaper by Kate Ehle -- many more here ] The Chicago psychedelic garage-rock quartet Unicycle Loves You opened the NYCTaper CMJ show last Thursday at Bruar Falls in the middle of the afternoon. The band attracted a crowd of fans and friends and displayed during their too-brief twenty-minute set why they were booked for CMJ, completely independently, by nyctaper and Jonny Leather for the same day. That evening they performed at Union Hall as part Jonny's show. The Bruar Falls [...]

[these amazing photos were taken for nyctaper by Kate Ehle -- many more here ] We liked the Kittens Ablaze 2009 release The Monstrous Vanguard so much that we booked the band twice last Thursday. Kittens headlined the NYCTaper CMJ show at Bruar Falls , and also played the After The Jump showcase at Cake Shop later that evening. While the album is structured and melodic with a definite resemblance to early Death Cab, the live version of [...]

Recommended Show: SATURDAY, OCTOBER 24, 2009 CARPARK TENTH ANNIVERSARY PARTY @ CAMEO GALLERY 93 North 6th Street Brooklyn, NY 11211 $8, 8PM In just a few more hours CMJ will be over, and we can (mostly) forget about it for the 360 days or so. However, it appears that the wild and craziest day is still in front of us. I grabbed what I think is a good list of most day and night shows below--I will scour for my daily "day party" post just to make sure. Not only are there a shit load of [...]

So, I finally got out to see some shows last night, and while I got home way too late, it was a pretty productive evening on the whole. I started out* my CMJ at the M for Montreal showcase at Arlene's Grocery where I took in BEAST, Think About Life, and Malajube. During We Are Wolves set, I snuck over to the Mercury to catch the charming Mumford and Sons. After Malajube went off, I headed over to Cake Shop to catch CMJ buzz band, Surfer Blood and then I capped off the night at Living Room with a couple [...]

Recommended Show: THURSDAY, OCTOBER 22, 2009 SADDLE CREEK SHOWCASE @ KNITTING FACTORY 361 Metropolitan Avenue Brooklyn, NY 11211 $12, 7PM Another night of great shows happens tonight all over the City. Miles Benjamin Anthony Robinson, Orenda Fink, Old Canes, UUVVWWZ, Beep Beep and guest Suzannah Johannes are all on the bill there tonight. Check out a list of other shows [...]

For tomorrow's day party, it's time to move on into Brooklyn. NYC Taper is throwing a wonderful showcase at Bruar Falls. I like this group of bands a lot because none of them are really very flashy or buzzy or play Todd P venues or are necessarily very hip, that sort of thing. But they're all really, really solid bands and worthy of hype. A very well put-together show, if you ask me. Highlights include Kittens Ablaze, Motel Motel, Peasant, and The Loom, all of whom I've posted mp3s from here before. In honor of the really amazing rendition of [...]
The new video for "This Machine is Dying" is embedded above. This particular song is often the highlight of a live Kittens Ablaze show, and includes a ton of audience participation. Experience the band live when Kittens Ablaze headline the NYCTaper CMJ show at Bruar Falls on Thursday . The show starts at 12 noon, and KA will play last at 5:45 pm. After CMJ, Kittens Ablaze hit the road, with the following confirmed tour dates: 11/1 - PHILADELPHIA, PA @ The Fire/IOU Records (9pm) 11/2 - [...]

Well look at that, It's already that time of year again: C - M - J ! Version 2009 to be precise. And you know the last thing we want is to send you off into the trenches unprepared and indecisive, which is why we're back again with yet another comprehensive plan of action/preview/treasure trove of MP3s to help nudge you through the week ahead. Just as with prior CMJ and SXSW previews, we listed only one show for each recommended band. Most of the bands listed here are playing several – if [...]
