Is Tropical ...Specially in Sydney right now, but I actually wanted to refer to London three piece Is Tropical , comprising of Gary Barber (Vocals/Guitars/Keys), Simon Milner (Vocals/Guitars/Keys) and Dominic Apa (Drums/Programming). Their upcoming debut single 'When O'When' (to be released on newbie Hitclub Records on the 18th of January 2010) initially struck me as intriguingly odd, manga-ish kinda cowboy be-bop cruising music. And then, in my head, the track formed the shape of something like a ruggedly handsome and [...]

A London based band that doesn't try to sound like the Klaxons or The Libertines is welcome enough but big smoke dwelling The High Wire are a breath of fresh air. Their echoy, layered music is as unique as it is sentimental. Whilst the band ooze with 80s shoegaze influences ' Leave Me In Love ' is more of a twee affair, driven by seasidey synth whilst male-female vocals serve the listener a hefty portion of sentimentality. This tune sits in [...]
Give Is Tropical's "When O' When" a couple minutes to heat up... and then feel uncomfortable. This track heads in a few different direction but never loses its raw pop roots. Reminds me of a mix between Test Icicles and the Klaxons.
"I think even people who've hated everything we've ever made before could absolutely love this record," says Tom Findlay of UK dance-pop duo Groove Armada , and damn if he doesn't seem to be right. Findlay and and his cohort Andy Cato have been banging out a blend of house, downtempo, big-beat, and pop for a dozen years now, but on their new album, Black Light , due out February 23rd, they turn the beat around in a bold new way. Inspired by the spirit of the Lovebox festival they curate in London each year, which [...]

BEST ALBUMS OF THE NOUGHTIES The daunting task of putting together something that you know lots of readers won't agree with is never easy, but then we thought you could always go make your own lists. At least we had the balls... So the 50s had rock n roll, the 60s had it's pop and folk, the 70s it's punk, disco and glam, the 80s it's pop, hip hop and hair rock, the 90s it's grunge, brit pop and dance music. It begs the question - what standout genre defines the [...]

Qualche sorpresa.
Music brag NME has crowned The Strokes' debut album 'This is It' as the best album of the decade. As the naughties come to a close NME (and a long list of music experts) voted for what they thought are the best 100 albums of the decade. With the concluding list spanning artists from Jay-Z to Johnny Cash and a few unexpected ones in between. The New York rockers beat off the likes of Primal Scream's 'XTRMNR' and 'Up The Bracket' by The Libertines to take the holy grail. Mike Skinner must be [...]

Music brag NME has crowned The Strokes' debut album 'This is It' as the best album of the decade. If that isn't enough encouragement for the boys to get cracking with their next album release then I don't know what is. "Transformer le dancefloor en chambre froide". These New Puritans ou le rock froid venu d'Angleterre.
You Say Party! We Say Die! XXXX Out 02/09/10 Listen to 'There is XXXX' and 'Dark Days' here As 2006 saw a new wave of indie dance-rock hit the radars, with bands like the Klaxons, CSS, Crystal Castles and The Teenagers quickly hijacking the attentions of music lovers and critics all over the world, an up and coming five-piece from British Columbia named You Say Party! We Say Die! (or YSP!WSD! for short) were quickly developing a name for themselves minutes over the Northern borders of Canada (where [...]

Here's the weird thing about the British: In general, they have much better taste in music than Americans. While we waste our time on interchangeable pop stars, they're singing the praises of Gossip's Beth Ditto. But their likes and dislikes are very particular - and, in general, they seem to love the kinds of semi-mainstream/semi-indie bands that become one-hit wonders or just never make a huge splash in the U.S. and then fairly quickly fall out of favor with the music-geek set. For example: NME has just named its #1 album of the '00s... and it's [...]
Pitchfork may have usurped everyone with their best-of-the-decade list, but the floodgates are open now and many other publications are printing their nominations. Today (Nov. 17), the NME has produced a list of the albums they consider to be the best of the decade, and there are very few surprises. The paper was one of the earliest champions of the Strokes when they emerged at the beginning of the decade, and Is This It is their predictable number 1 choice. The list is male dominated and indie-centric—Jay Z's The Blueprint [...]

Yet another list from a UK Music Magazine. NME always prided itself on being the cool UK Magazine, well since it changed its name from New Musical Express , and since Melody Maker disappeared along with Cliff Richard's shadows. So what's their list of the Best albums of the decade like? Keep reading. 50. MIA - Arular 49. Muse - Absolution 48. Walkmen - Bows and Arrows 47. Brendan Benson - Lapalco 46. Delgados - The Great Eastern This list starts so much better than many others. It's great to [...]

I've been listening to quite a lot of dubstep recently, so I thought I'd share some of my collection with you all. Over the next few weeks, I'll be featuring some of my favourite dubstep artists in a mini series. It seemed logical to kick off with perhaps the best known name in dubstep, genre pioneer Skream. His track "Midnight Request Line" was an underground smash back in 2006, and now he's back with two new singles, old skool jungle cut "Burnin' Up" and reverb-drenched stomper "Memories of Third Base". That's not to say he's not been busy [...]

Pic: by caligulashots "And we can pop bottles all night, baby you could have whatever you like".
