Norman Wong Even though he coined it himself, I often wonder if Joel Gibb regrets encouraging the use of "gay church folk music" as a description for the music of The Hidden Cameras . Certainly they got a lot of mileage out of it in the band's earlier days, as it was both attention grabbing and accurate, but now, four albums in, it probably deserves to be retired. It's not that it's no longer descriptive - Gibb is still gay (one assumes), it's still music and it's still built on foundations of folk and church traditions [...]

By Eve Marcellus All Photos By Patrick Kelly It is with most sincere apologies that I state that this is yet again another Perez Hilton-related post. As part of the "Perez Hilton Presents Tour," last Wednesday the enigmatic and adorable Kiwi singer known as Ladyhawke (aka Pip Brown) took to the venerable Fillmore stage. For full disclosure, this was my first time at the Fillmore, which is an awesome venue. It is a little striking that the lineup of shows for [...]

It's easy to assume that after the success of Ladyhawk, bands in East Van would start trying to rehash the proggy, dirty, lost-in-the-woods-drunk-off-yo ur-ass, huge sounds that propelled the band to some nice National exposure. That;s just how scene build and music works these days, and I guess if you heard the sludgy guitars and sing/screamed vocals Minto offers up on Tonight I Lay My Head as a one off, you might be tempted to lump the Vancouver band as a sounds alike, but this Vancouver band has been at it for years. The thing [...]

We've been meaing to put up a lil sumthin sumthin about these guys for a while. Created by frontman Kam, the Chain Gang of 1974 are an up and coming indietronica hipster dance-hop group from Denver, CO. They are currently playing with extended BDN family members 3oh!3 as their back up band all summer at the Van's Warped Tour. From what we've heard, it sounds like the tour is going great and we can't wait to get the full experience on August 9. I caught up with Kam after [...]

Really. Nuff said. If I didn't have a baby due that weekend, I'd be in the car already driving to Sackville NB for Sappyfest . The chance to see Mt. Eerie, Julie Doiron, 100 Dollars, Bloodsport, The Burning Hell, FemBots, Jon-Rae Fletcher, Ladyhawk, Snailhouse, Ohbijou, Wintersleep, Timber Timbre ... shit, lets just say lots of great bands ... all within walking distance and surrounded by appreciative fans (not loud mouthed festival goers) is not one you should pass up. And thanks to your friends at herohill (and Pigeon Row PR), flat pockets is no longer a [...]
Girls - "Hellhole Ratrace" . Terry and Biz go down to the water. I'm still up on the deck and all I can see is Terry's blue bathing-suit passing through the trees. I am resting a white styrofoam cup on the railing. When they step out of the woods and onto the planks they are caught in the full brunt of the dock's lights. They squint like it's noon. Terry tosses her hair and laughs and from up on the deck it looks like such a noony gesture. They start talking and they must be talking about how [...]

It's always good to see someone who you've followed make a success of things; someone who spends countless hours making music and friends, whilst being more than happy to give away the fruits of their labour for no profit. One guy who epitomises the success that one can reap on the blogosphere by working hard and being a super nice person is A1 Bassline - have a flick through your iTunes and chances are that you've got some music of his that you've found online, for free. And chances ALSO are that those tunes are absolutely massive! Times [...]

Sappyfest , July 31st - Aug. 2nd in Sackville, New Brunswick. Sappyfest is a yearly music festival taking place in Sackville, NB. A small college town with a population of just over 5000, it's a scenic and intimate setting for this collection of renowned and acclaimed musical acts to gather and perform. Now in its fourth year, the festival is produced collaboratively alongside the Ok.Quoi?! Arts Festival and Struts Gallery & Faucet Media Arts Centre. The festival's main stage is a large street tent in downtown Sackville with an old movie theatre, church, tavern and decrepit music hall [...]
Calgary, Alberta's the Dudes are set for a new release. The album is called Blood Guts Bruises Cuts and it's bound to rock your socks off. We caught up with Dan Vacon from the band and got some of his recommendations. Check em out! Alright. First you have to pick up Mohawk Lodge's album "Wildfires". It's one part heartbreaking, one part sing along party. It makes me want to get loaded with my friends and say things like, "We did it though, didn't we?" Next, get Culture Reject's self titled [...]
