Lambchop - Give It from Merge Records on Vimeo . This video for Lambchop's "Give It" begins with quotes from Pitchfork and Aquarium Drunkard gushing about how amazing their performance was at the Merge XX show. It's an intense clip that starts softly and raises up the energy one notch at a time until you find yourself wondering how the room didn't explode. I stumbled on this today and I'm so glad that I did. And if you love this, you will be happy to know that [...]

Filed under: News Chris Knox , the indie godfather of New Zealand indie music, suffered a debilitating stroke in June at his home in Auckland. His many friends in New Zealand's music scene -- and some from far further afield -- have rallied round by recording a tribute album 'Stroke -- Songs for Chris Knox,' which sees a string of covers of his material and was released in New Zealand on Monday (Nov. 16). Knox, 57, first found notoriety with his punk band the Enemy in [...]

I went to the zoo on Wednesday. That has nothing to do with music - I just wanted to share the cool gator picture I took. Let's recap the week: - New Magnetic Fields! New Tindersticks! New Lambchop! And a Chris Knox tribute album to boot. It's like God looked at my list of favorite bands and said, "let's give him more". - Random Songs came and went from Broadcast, The Wannadies, Chappaquiddick Skyline, The Notwist, and Stars. You all really liked [...]

Also: Did I say "oh, fuck yes" already? I'll go ahead and say it again. Oh, fuck yes. That is all. Previously: Woo - New Tindersticks Album! Woo - [...]
There were many, many reasons all of us here at the Cream felt beyond bummed we didn't get our collective ass in gear to hit the road to Carolina for XX Merge, the recent celebration of one of the... Continue reading "Lambchop: Live at XX Merge" >
Pitchfork TV has gotten its hands on some excellent footage of Lambchop's triumphant set at Merge XX, the 20th anniversary party for Merge Records, which is above for your Friday work-avoidance pleasure. The band runs through an incredible take of "Give It," with Kurt Wagner rocking the shit out of a chair during the entire song. I've never seen someone sitting down onstage rock that hard. Filed under: Concerts and Tours , News , New Music The final tracklisting of the tribute album for New Zealand indie godfather Chris Knox -- who suffered a massive stroke at his home in Auckland in June -- has been confirmed. 'Stroke -- Songs for Chris Knox'', which will raise money for the musician and his family, will be released in New Zealand on Monday (Nov. 16) and in the US next February. The album features covers of some of Knox's material from a three-decade-long career in [...]

Go here: Chris Knox - Stroke Are you there right now? DON'T LIE TO ME!! If you've done as told, click on any of the boxes on the page to listen to samples from the upcoming Chris Know tribute album. I've clicked on about half of them (of course, I went for the Lambchop and Stephin Merritt songs immediately) - there's not a bum song in the bunch, which is not too surprising considering the source material and the quality of the artists involved. Per the words of [...]

so, how many people make a collective? i get quite a few emails stating that so and so is a musical collective, but always wondered how many folks actually make up a true collective. i would say that to be a true collective it would have to be made up by more than 8 members, or maybe 10. is lambchop a collective cause they have like 22 members or are they just a band? trivial, i know. anyway, nevada city, california's golden shoulders which is lead by adam kline is a musical collective, or at least the press [...]

Two weeks ago I posted a list of my 50 favorite albums of the past decade. You can catch up with that here , here , here , here , and here , if you'd like. Or, you know, just scroll down a little bit, I guess. That's probably easier. While drafting the list (there were 164 original considerations) I found that I rediscovered plenty of albums that were and are still worthy of more attention, even though they ultimately weren't included on the finished product. It was extremely difficult to cut many of them, [...]

Let's recap the week: - As I write this, my car is still in the shop . Based on my last conversation with the mechanic, I'm looking at a 700 dollar repair job. This obviously does not delight me, but it's actually considerably less than I expected. If you combine my transmission issues with that fact that I also need 4 new tires, it's a goddamn miracle that I drove it to Florida last week and got back safely. - Speaking of Florida, my old Floridian stomping grounds popped up twice this week. First, in this post [...]
Three reasons to go see Vic Chestnutt at Lincoln Hall tonight: 1. His band not only features members of Godspeed You Black Emperor but god damned Guy Picciotto from god damed Fugazi! 2. He is prolific, underrated, has collaborated with everyone from Lambchop to Elf Power, a guy named Michael Stipe produced some of his earlier work and yet you've never heard of him or bothered to check him out despite reading tons of glowing reviews. [...]
My car is in the shop today. It's a transmission issue, so the repair is gonna hurt. If I disappear for the rest of the week, you'll probably be able to find me in my closet, rocking slowly back and forth, covered in tears. I couldn't think of a single song about car repair (any suggestions?). So here's a live version of one of my favorite songs about driving, which is what I'd rather be doing right now instead of sitting at home and stressing about how much this repair is gonna cost. [...]
