Mumford & Sons: Sigh No More I don't usually care for bands with banjos, and I come across a lot of groups that have spent too much time watching O Brother Where Art Thou and not enough time writing great songs. UK band Mumford & Sons , despite touting banjos and looking like they're ready to hop boxcars, don't fall into that trap, as they've come up with one of the more solid set of tracks to be released this year. Sigh No More [...]

Photography by Ala Protasewicz Hope everyone enjoyed our cheesy-quasi-romantic-style mixtapes yesterday ! At least as much as we did spending the past year getting to the point where we could share them! But alas, it's time to move on as there's still so much wonderful music floating around, just waiting for our ears to gobble up, and today, it's July Flame by Laura Veirs... To be [...]

Swedish Prince and Nu Shooz fans, O'Spada , return with another unapologetic slice of early-1980s pop funk, "Ten Strikes." It's on the heels of excellent first single "Time" (which can be heard on JeffMix2009.06.27 ) , both songs that would be candidates for the soundtrack if anyone dared do a remake of Purple Rain . Morris Day would be proud... O'Spada: Ten Strikes MP3 • • [...]

I'm amazed at how quickly Animal Collective have become a major influence. It usually takes bands a generation before they're cited or imitated, but it seems I'm writing about the latest Animal Collective-inspired band every other month or so ( Atlas Sound , Toro Y Moi , Bagheera , Akudama ). And Brooklyn-based Yeasayer are another one that wear their experimental, groove-laden AC influences proudly. But the spunky, highly accessible "Ambling Alp," from the upcoming album Odd Blood , is a real step forward for Yeasayer (coming on the heals [...]

If music had a stock market, I'd buy big in Chiddy Bang . The unsigned Philly rapper-producer duo, who just released the free-to-download mixtape The Swelly Express , have got all the right ingredients: indie samples; smooth, non-threatening flow; college pedigree (apparently they're both still students). Looking for who comes next in the Cudi-Drake-Asher-Lupe line? Give "All Things Go," with a sneaky clever Sufjan Stevens-meets-Kanye West sample, and tell me how many shares you'd like. Chiddy Bang: All Things Go from the mixtape The Swelly Express [...]

Tegan and Sara: Sainthood Tegan and Sara have a great album in them, but Sainthood isn't it. It's close on several fronts, especially when it plays to the Calgary twins' strengths, their teenage-girl harmonies and affinity for strong pop hooks, like on lead single "Hell" and "On Directing" (with its cutie-pie "go steady with me" chorus). But it's also a frustrating record, as the Quin sisters seem caught between going deeper and darker with their sound, as on "Paperback Head" or "Night Watch," or [...]
Bella Union is preparing for a bumper 2010, with new albums due in Q1 from Laura Veirs, Lawrence Arabia, Midlake, Beach House, The Acorn, The Kissaway Trail, and Abe Vigoda. The label's recent signees include Lone Wolf, I Break Horses, John Grant with Midlake, and Simon's own new band, Snowbird (where does he find the time!). Many Bella Union artists also have US labels, so it isn't always possible to host every band on the roster but their SXSW 2010 schedule is starting to look pretty exciting! ( more details )
