Decent week of music in Chicago given the fact that it's a holiday. Having already seen The Jesus Lizard twice this year, the show of the week for me - by far - is The Sadies and Chris Mills at the Hideout on Saturday. I also strongly recommend my former DC-compatriots Vandaveer at Schuba's on Monday. As always, my picks are in bold . You'll see that I've added links to some videos and MP3s for some of the more interesting shows (in my opinion, at [...]

In the Book Notes series, authors create and discuss a music playlist that relates in some way to their recently published book. In her debut collection of short stories, What the World Will Look Like When All the Water Leaves Us , Laura van den Berg's characters engage the mystical world as they struggle to overcome their personal losses. Publishers Weekly wrote of the book: "In her affecting debut collection, van den Berg taps into her characters' losses with an impressive clarity. Each of these [...]

The folkworld is rich with young artists these days, and with their heroes and forebears; head out to any major summer festival, and you'll find the full mix, from long-established sixties folkies to mid-career singer-songwriters my own age, from second- and third-album folkies in their late twenties working hard to prove that they have the stamina and talent to sustain the buzz to emerging newbies who tend towards the young and the restless. Less common, however, is the musician or band that breaks into the scene later in life. It's an oft unspoken [...]

The Tree People Human Voices (Guerssen) [FLUTE FOXES] Within the first 30 seconds of the Tree People's reissued sophomore album, Human Voices, the psych-folk trio tests an aughties listener's threshold for both the weird and the tender: "In the morning when you're still sleeping/ When you have those crazy nightmares/ I swear I'm here within the birdsong/ Human voices joining along in our loving song." These trippy lines are beautifully delivered—spooky three-part harmonies paired with unpredictable chord and tempo changes rattling out from a finger-picked [...]

Tonight here in Baltimore it's fairly quiet, but you could go see Liam Finn open for Eddie Vedder at the Lyric Opera House. Down in DC you could go low key and check Laura Gibson and Musee Mecanique at the Black Cat or check the new project Clues , which features Ex-Unicorn Alden Penner and Ex-Arcade Fire Brandon Reed at DC9 . Jerusalem In My Heart , Authorization , and Can't Be Stopped open for them. Up north in Philly the fabulous Ida Maria [...]

When ex-members of two of Canada's biggest and most influential indie bands ( Unicorns and Arcade Fire ) make an album together, you don't need to fall over yourself promoting it (the band doesn't have a website or even a myspace page), word will get out on it's own. This is the approach that Montreal's Clues have taken with their debut album. Just by playing a few unannounced shows and releasing a couple great singles, the experimental pop outfit led by Adrien Penn and Brendan Reed has built up a considerable amount of buzz for their May 19th self-titled album . [...]
