Hot on the heels of last year's awesome Find Me A Drink Home , the Lansing, Michigan trio Cheap Girls is back with another great full-length full of straightforward punkish power-pop, My Roaring 20's . There really aren't any huge changes to be found when comparing My Roaring 20's to their debut, but (again) it seems as if Cheap Girls know exactly what it is they do well and just stick with it. The production is (however) a bit better but still retains enough of the lo-fi charm that no one will accuse [...]

I've never heard of an indie folk collective called The Wading Girl nor was I familiar with it's frontman, Billy Wallace . I'm still not sure how that pertains to Wallace's solo debut, The Road Spit Me Out , but it's a cool little album full of what sounds like almost vintage sounding folksy old-timey country music that I might picture being played during the less-raucous operating hours of a dusty old saloon. It's a bit twangy, a bit ragtime, and (overall) very traditional and authentic sounding (what I mean is that it sounds old without [...]

Abba, REO Speedwagon, Whitney [...]

The best day of 2002? July 27, when Jasper came to live with me. Another fucked up year. Seriously, it was very hard to live in DC at this time. We'd had 9/11, followed by ridiculous anthrax attacks and then, as a final insult, we had a sniper killing people randomly for several months. Whatever. Rather than linger on the drama, I thought this week I'd just comment on the music that made my 2002 list... I am in the school of thought that finds PSB's Release their worst album, [...]
Frankly, I think we lost the trail for a bit there. It's fun to interview the artists that we've loved for years, like Pavement and Echo and the Bunnymen and we have spent the past month feverishly trying to top ourselves with even bigger interviews. But in the end, you know those bands already and we assume you've come here to hear great new bands. This has been an amazing decade for music and there are still a lot of good bands out there, who we know you'll love as much as we do. With [...]

Setlist: The Continental, October 24, 2009 So Keep jumped in to help me out with DJing at The Continental Saturday night since Rudy had a prior commitment, and I feel comfortable saying we kicked total ass. We got a pretty good early crowd and the place was absolutely choked with bodies by 2 a.m. or so. We decided it was a "zero pop" night and Keep enjoyed playing bad cop to anyone requesting what he deemed not heavy enough. That's not to say we didn't play catchy stuff, we just didn't allow ourselves to be [...]

This weekend, my wife's brother got married: a wedding a long time coming, and as such, planned to the last detail. His blushing bride wore vintage lace in cream and brown, as befit the season and their shared love of the natural world, and for moment there, time stopped, like it should, when he in his best grey suit turned to watch her come up our impromptu aisle, her flower-girls tight against her, unsure of the attention. The minister was lighthearted and blessedly brief, the speeches fine and poignant, and throughout it all, [...]

I arrived at the Moore Theatre last night just in time to get my Will Call tickets right when the doors opened, thankfully – since it was one of the rainiest days of the year in Seattle, which is saying a lot. I stood out in the lobby for a bit before they opened the doors for us to find our seats. I – along with a few other people – trickled into the old theater through the corridors myself in the box seats, the others spread around within the theater. A few guys came and sat in [...]

I don't know as much about Townes Van Zandt as I'd like to. Despite the great similarities in sound and sensibility between his work and that of Guthrie, Dylan, and other core members of the folkworld, somehow he never cropped up in a childhood balanced between a mother's love of the Seeger classics and a father's fandom for the singer-songwriters of his own generation. Of course, some of that is due to Van Zandt's relative obscurity during the bulk of his life - as my father notes, until his resurgence in [...]
The Fate Lions "Good Enough For You" The Fate Lions are a musical quartet lead by singer/songwriter Jason Manriquez. The band has a low key indie pop sound that recalls early REM and The Lemonheads, as well as that sleepy Beta Band vibe. Opening up with a fade-in on "Seen It All" is a good start with a catchy rhythm guitar riff that builds to a multi-tracked chorus. The rumbling "Astronaut" is a solid tune that reminds me of Cracker's "Teen Angst" quite a bit. The 80 and 90's styled shine is all over the album and there [...]
