Queen of DIY, tUnE-YaRdS, released her (awesome) debut album, BiRd-BrAiNs , earlier this year , but a deluxe version is now out on 4AD with some bonus remixes of her track, "Hatari." What a gift! The song was remixed by Drunkenmonkey, Karn and The Small Is Beautiful, but I'll give you the Drunkenmonkey version because it's just the best of the bunch (no pun intended??). tUnE-YaRdS - "Hatari (Drunkenmonkey remix)" [MP3] tUnE-YaRdS -"Hatari" [MP3] [via Stereogum ] While You're [...]
Click here to view the embedded video. Well, the mainstream is picking up on this a bit late, but better late then never, right? Let's Go Sailing's brilliantly sweet The Chaos In Order has been a constant listen since it came out a couple years ago. One of the most memorable tracks is "Icicles" (though it's hard to pick a legit standout track because they're all so good), which Radio Shack realized (...two years late) and have now decided to feature it on their appropriate wintry commercial, "Product Tree Farm". [...]

I came across this excellent bootleg last week, which finds power-poppers Weezer at a pivotal time in their musical evolution: Following the extended hiatus that befell the band after the commercial failure of Pinkerton , this show features the band blasting out old favorites and debuting songs from the soon-to-be-released Green Album, live in 2001 to a ravenous San Diego audience. At this stage, it was hard to say exactly where Weezer were headed artistically, but I remember friends ditching school the Tuesday Green came out to run to our town's lowly record store [...]
You've probably already realized it, but this weekend is a bit special, so let's highlight some Halloween happenings... I'll start with one that's not part of the usual weekly events, but Black Mountain and Bison at the Rickshaw on Halloween will be epic. Friday sees Prince Paul play Vancouver for the third Halloween weekend in a row. Why? I have no idea. But he keeps coming back, so you can probably expect a decent sized crowd at the Astoria for Damaged Goods. If you recall Halloween at the ER a [...]

Photography by gabriele chiapparini Man, I love our community ... I really do. Monday, we shared member and photo contest winner Isa's Autumn inspired mixtape , right? Well today, I've got another gem for you. This time it's our man Walzac and his beauty of a mixtape For Once I Wish To Sail . As he wrote, "With the pleasant [...]

Jim Wallis of Looking Glass We recently caught up with Jim Wallis, member of London pop rockers <b<My Sad Captains and also the artist behind the soothing folkatronica of Looking Glass . SXP: Jim, you live in London but somehow 'Fish, Fowl, Flood' was released originally on a very limited Italian cassette only label… er, how did that come about, and what appealed to you about it? [...]

Finbarr is a friend of mine, and has been for a number of years. However, lately, that friendship has teetered close to the edge, thanks to a single act by Finbarr. A near-unforgivable act. Finbarr know about, and knew this, band, and hadn't told me about them. I am not lefthanded are named after a quote from "The Princess Bride", and are, in fact, not left-handed. I actually am, but that's a story for another day. And they're good. In fact, they're fantastic. In fact, upon hearing two [...]

Some of you may have noticed that I have been MIA over the last several weeks when it comes to proper album reviews, and for that I apologize. I blame my recent absence on a combination of the stress from my job hunt and move to NYC along with the fact that I haven't come across a record that really struck a chord with me in quite some time. Maybe I got burnt out on music for a bit or maybe there has been a dearth of solid releases recently, but either way I knew all of that was about [...]

The defending World Series champions have had a relatively easy run to the playoffs this season, but as the playoffs dawn and their championship defense begins, fans can't be blamed for feeling relatively uneasy about the team's chances. The Mets fell apart early, quite literally in the case of many players' ligaments, and other than a late September run of success by Atlanta, none of the rest of the division was up to challenging the Phillies for the NL East crown this year. So the Phillies have managed to cruise to a title despite some really shaky and troubling performances [...]
Photography by Margarida Santapaciência So by now you know there's a movie based on the revered & loved children's book Where The Wild Things Are , right? Of course you do. We all do, every blog, including this one, and their mother's blog has shared trailers, discussed the use of the Arcade Fire song in those trailers, and now talked about how Karen O. from the Yeah Yeah Yeahs has created an original soundtrack for the movie. [...]
Homercat has returned from his AC/DC vacation. Now he has to talk about it. It goes without saying that it was simply a magnificent night. OK I'll say a bit more. For us folks living on this island it's a major pain in the ass to get to Vancouver, even though it's only 57 miles from Victoria. Roughly a 2 hour ferry ride one way and that doesn't count waiting in line especially if there's a sailing wait. 74 bucks one way, small car and two passengers. Needless to say it's impossible [...]

Phil called me Wednesday to break the news of Jakes Brokman's passing . I was on my cell phone and at first I didn't understand who he was talking about. Who? Somone associated with the Bunnymen? Which one? I hung up still not understanding. When I got home, I checked out my twitter feed and when I saw Jake's name, it hit me like a ton of bricks. Jake Brockman. Jake Brockman. Jake Brockman. I couldn't believe he died tragically in the same way as his good friend Pete De Freitas did just over 20 years ago [...]

I can think of much worse ways to spend an August weekend than in the heart of one of my favorite cities (San Francisco), seeing an eclectic lineup of bands both headliner-huge and quirky-small. Last year's inaugural edition of the Outside Lands Music & Arts Festival boasted a solid roster of national and local musicians, but was plagued by a few logistical snafus that ranged from the mildly annoying ( no, you can't go that way anymore, you have to walk all the way around ) to the borderline panic-attack inducing [...]

We running this let's go, I'm on a boat I'm on a boat, everybody look at me, 'cause I'm sailing on a boat. That's what I would be singing if I was actually on a boat. Instead we're sat by the quayside eating jacket potatoes and talking about how modern day pirates aren't quite as badass as their classic treasure hunting counterparts. Seriously, tracksuit bottoms and an AK47 just doesn't put the same excitement in our boots. Okay the rocket launcher strapped to the back of that mischievous Somalian is pretty monstrous but we miss the eye patch and cannonball [...]
Picture taken from here When I started this blog I really didn't know where I was going with it, and to be honest I still don't, that's half the fun I guess. One thing I never really imagined would happening was that I would actually get other people posting on here, so when I decided to let Bob loose on my 'baby' a few months back I did feel as if I was opening Pandora's [...]
There is no denying that Phish has been absolutely killing it this summer. Let me put that out there right at the beginning to alleviate any thoughts that this list is meant to serve as a bashing mechanism. The first leg (June) of the summer tour was highlighted, musically, by Camden, a scorching final day Bonnaroo first set with Bruce Springsteen and two awesome shows in Wisconsin at Alpine Valley. July and August have proven to be just as solid with incredible stands at Red Rocks and The Gorge so far. [...]

[log on to DCtoBC.com to jam it] JAM THAT SONG while you read. it's smooth. let's keep it real. i don't care who you are - jock, nerd, heart throb, class clown, recluse, homebody, mama's boy, cool kid, shy guy - everybody who is anybody has a roster, girls and guys alike . you know what i mean. a roster, a team, a squad. it's far from that list of names in your favorite sports franchise's brochure at the [...]
