In the Book Notes series, authors create and discuss a music playlist that relates in some way to their recently published book. Blake Butler is the rare young writer who consistently and effectively challenges his readers. Scorch Atlas is a haunting collection of interconnected stories and vignettes, a dystopian work of genius. The book itself is a work of art. The internal pages are individually distressed, and the page edges and cover appear burnt and scarred, and the design complements the book's theme perfectly. Matt [...]

This Friday I bring you a CRYSTAL CASTLES video I shot from their secret show in LA a couple weeks ago. Alice Glass is one of my favourites to see live so click below and enjoy the show... From a show in 08 after they got into it with security for throwing a drum set off the stage... Their new LP is slated to drop in April along with an LP with their early Demos, don't sleep. [...]

Photo by Harlz_ In 2005, Australian rock outfit Children Collide made their debut with We Three, Brave & True . Featuring the brilliant "We Are Amphibious", the six-track EP didn't so much announce the group's arrival as it did kick the door down. In 2006, the equally impressive Glass Mountain Liars EP followed, & now the band is elated to present their full-length debut, The Long Now . The 1st single, "Social Currency", is a barnstorming disco-political frenzy that observes the perils [...]

Nirvana: In Utero (1993) Adam: I was 12 years old and my family was on vacation in Florida when I saw the news reports on TV in our hotel saying that the singer from a band I was vaguely familiar with had killed himself. I was just beginning to be interested in rock music in 1994, and after Kurt Cobain's suicide, I wasn't allowed to own any Nirvana albums. I had to get my Nirvana fix [...]

"Transformer le dancefloor en chambre froide". These New Puritans ou le rock froid venu d'Angleterre.

There's a method to the madness, I tell ya. The blog ran a contest a couple of weeks ago, asking our readers what they'd like to see more of. A sort of suggestion box or comment card. A common theme was "shorter reviews." Alright then, I'll try to keep the brevity rocking hard on this one. In a nutshell, Tune Yards (which is officially denoted as tUnE-yArDs, but since typing toggle case is kind of an ass pain, I'll stay with MLA style) is one of the most schizophrenic and beautiful records to grace these ears [...]

The cheery lady selling tickets at Mississippi Studios refused to check my ID for the guest list under the assumption that "friends of Laura Gibson aren't liars." It gave me a warm feeling to be trusted by a perfect stranger, a feeling that aligned well with the resulting mood of a night brought to life by fragile sounds from honest people. With violins and whispery vocals, Rauelsson lulled the shivers of a crowd freshly chilled from the rain outside. Tranquil fans smartly dressed in scarves and pea coats scattered themselves [...]

Reader's Choice: Artic Monkeys – Whatever People Say I Am, That's What I'm Not Was anyone shocked to see Whatever People Say I Am, That's What I'm Not win the popular vote for Best of 2006? If you were, you were probably born in 2007… just woke up from a 4 year coma. The album is stunningly simple. Its guitar work and lightening quick vocals are basic, but there's genius in that simplicity. Whatever People Say I Am, That's What I'm Not feels rough around the edges, but [...]

Joss Stone was tapped to host the red carpet show for the MTV Europe Music Awards last week. I don't know what they were thinking when they asked her to do that given that she can be pretty rude when she wants to – or when she's smoked a little too much. It was proven when the singer basically called the Jonas Brothers liars when they said that they wouldn't be going out and partying for Kevin's 22nd birthday. Talk about awkwardness. They're a Disney band Joss, not Motley Crue. Get your facts straight. Or better yet, someone better think [...]
Moop Jaw is a collective of 4 artists working predominantly in music videos but don't be fooled, they have their sights set on world domination. We spoke to one quarter of the collective, Rhett Wade-Ferrell, about his recent trip to America, stalking Jessica Biel, shooting a Christian Joy documentary and working with Neon Indian and Peaches. Also known as reasons this whole "world domination" thing might come to fruition. Hey Rhett, we hear you've been working on the new Neon Indian video - how did that come about? We met Alan Polomo (Neon [...]
by charles poladian So it's this time again. I know what you're thinking, what now? Well, it's near the end of the year and near the end of the decade, so it's all about the list. What's the best toy to get, what's the best album of 2009, what's the best album of the first decade of 2000, what's the worst album of 2009, it all becomes too much. I guess we're all obsessive in that way, we need lists to categorize [...]
It's been two years since Vancouver's Hot Hot Heat have released any new music and it's probably been five or six since the phrase "New music from Hot Hot Heat" engendered a lot of excitement. Regardless, yesterday the band released two tracks from their upcoming album, "Future Breeds" and "JFK's LSD." While the tracks don't come out of left field or introduce any wildly new elements to band's music, they both trade in the powerful melodic sense that decorated their other releases for a darker, angular sound. "JFK's LSD" in particular sounds [...]
As I mentioned previously , Prof. Klein is a bit of a stickler about getting these Numerology pieces right beyond a shadow of a doubt. Instead of chalking early attempts up to the blogging learning curve like the rest of us, he stays awake at night, shaking with regret that low hanging fruit like the number 8 was not given its proper due. So today, as we all hold our breaths waiting to know if we'll ever know how bad the U2-scored Spiderman musical can possibly suck, Dave gives the mark of the arachnids its due, and continues to rewrite [...]

First Impressions gives you some insight into some of the most highly anticipated releases. This first piece was cooperatively written by Evan Kaloudis and Aidan Galea. Scissor "Scissor" opens with mournful backing vocals, that are reminiscent of a funeral choir. Lead vocals are then overlaid, "I found her with my scissor..." and the choir-like vocals slowly replaced with strings; not a quartet, but more of a lone cello and violin. Abruptly, the song shatters and all hell breaks loose, guitars run rampant, and the drums enter a stage of insanity. [...]
Unfortunately, something was screwy with the stream ripper at the radio station and today's show wasn't properly archived in mp3 format. So you cannot listen to it. Fortunately, we had fun, and that's all that really matters right?? Fun Fun Fun. No, we're not at that Austin fest; we can get down ourselves, thank you very much. 01| Goldspot – "Float On" (Modest Mouse cover) [MP3] 02| Frightened Rabbit - "Nothing Like You" 03| Grizzly Bear - "Ready, Able" [MP3] 04| Akudama - "Thumbelina" 05| Stricken City - "Small Things" [...]
