Hi! Remember me? I'm sorry for the lack of hustle and bustle round the Eclectic Eveasdroppings offices (read: my bed) over the past fortnight. I finished exams and then went off on a little ski holiday (I know, life is tough..) but I'm back now and fresh music deliveries will once again return. [...]
Gerry Rafferty - "Baker Street" MP3 Foo Fighters - "Baker Street" MP3 It's going to be tough to justify this one. I first started thinking about Gerry Rafferty when I was driving home from Boulder, Colo., recently. "Right Down the Line" came on some generic easy-listening station and I was frozen in my seat, warmed by the laid-back whiteboy grooves as if they were a hot-shot of heroin (not [...]

On December 23rd, the Washington D.C. area received 16 inches of snow, making it the sixth largest snow storm the area had seen in recorded history. Shortly thereafter, I escaped to my home country of South Africa, where summer reigned supreme. I thought, perhaps, that D.C. had seen the worst of the bad weather, but upon my return I was greeted with quite the opposite. Since the New Year, we have been hammered. Last weekend, we toppled Christmas's record, with nearby areas reporting up to 3 feet of the cold, fluffy stuff. With another 10-20 inches predicted for [...]

Penny, pointing the way as usual ... Lee Hazlewood / Nancy Sinatra - "Some Velvet Morning" I realized the other day that I've written scant little about being a dad and all that. I guess I always figured those blogs are boring as SHIT. I don't read any of those blogs, is what I mean, and so I wouldn't expect that anyone else would want to read anything I'D have to [...]

Photography by Elle Well... The weather outside is frightful, but the fire's soooo delightful. I wish there was no place to go today, but alas & alas, here we are and here we must be, no snuggling in a bed all day for us today. As the French say, "kest le vye, kest le vye", that's life man. One thing about the snow, it's keeping me indoors on the various stationary bikes. Not cool. BUT, made the most of it and did my first product review [...]

INSTRUCTIONS FOR THE KALI YUGA The Kali Yuga still has 200,000 or so years to play…good news for advocates & avatars of CHAOS, bad news for Brahmins, Yahwists, bureaucratic-gods & their runningdogs. I knew Darjeeling hid something for me soon as I heard the name-- dorje ling-- Thunderbolt City. In 1969 I arrived just before the monsoons. Old British hill station, summer hdqrs for Govt. of Bengal—streets in the form of winding wood staircases, the Mall with a View of Sikkim & Mt. Katchenhunga—Tibetan temples & refugees—beautiful yellow-porcelain [...]

In the past, the music of Horse Feathers—the vehicle for Justin Ringle's absolutely beautiful folk songs—has often been associated with the winter. That's not to say that Ringle's tunes are cold, but on the band's last album, 2008's House With No Home , he wrote songs about loneliness and isolation that just screamed (OK, whispered) for a snowy morning and a cup of tea. But on Horse Feathers' new record, it's a different season that gets some love. Due out on April 20 (insert 4/20 joke here) via Kill Rock Stars, Thistled Spring is supposedly a [...]

I have not experienced the feelings of truly being wowed by a band for a while. It's nearly 5 AM but I have not gone to bed because I have spent the last hour digging up all the information that I can on The Federals . They are one of the best young bands that I have heard so far this year, and I am blown away. I noticed them thanks to Tim from The Blue Walrus . They are the British band that the NME should be pushing. These guys are miles better than most of the [...]

Randy Weston radiates greatness. The legendary jazz musician possesses a rare combination of gentle grace and regal bearing. Even people who have no idea that the 83-year-old was apprenticed by Thelonious Monk, was produced by Duke Ellington and was a collaborator with the likes of Langston Hughes and Charles Mingus surely recognize that Weston exudes a powerful energy. It was all I could do to keep from bowing in his majestic presence during the hour I spent with Weston Thursday morning at the American Jazz Museum . Other obligations prevented me from attending [...]

I thought finding out you could play Farkle on the Internet sounded the death knell for my ability to accomplish anything. Then today I found a free Java-based website where you can play Settlers of Catan online against people around the world. Needless to say, that revelation - coupled with a hangover from massive drinking exhibiion last night - has left me utterly incapable of focusing on a task any larger than my laptop's monitor. I'm not normally one to find myself in a comatose state following a night of partying. Usually I'm awake and good to go, [...]

In the grunge music of the 90s we saw the mass standardization of the head-bang. For you young ones, that's when you take your nasty, long, greasy, unwashed hair and whip it from back to front and front to back in rapid motions. The result, obviously, is brain damage. That's what rock-n-roll will do for ya. Pop, on the other hand, takes that motion and reduces it to a quick nod. The good news is that you have more brain cells to kill with vices such as alcohol. The music of [...]

Blinking Lights and Other Revelations is a life's work for Mark Everett. It is an extraordinary collection of thirty three songs inspired by a much-publicised troubled family, a tortured soul and a furtive mind. But even with the 2008 'best of' collection (tagging on 'volume I' is a neat trick), Everett's autobiography and film about his father's life, there is more to come from Eels. Getting into character for the sequel to Souljacker, Hombre Lobo is the first of two albums in six months, as Everett throws aside the projects that drew him away from the daytime job of making [...]

S o long, porteño boys. It's been, well, interesting. But it's time to move on and, you know, see other people. After nearly four years of dating almost exclusively Argentine (with a few European one-night stands as well as dalliances with several guys from other South American countries tossed into the mix for the sake of variety), the United States is making a comeback. It's not that I ever swore off Mr. America, but it's been a long time since he's really turned my head. I don't believe I've even kissed a guy from [...]

The Unnamed by Joshua Ferris Reagan Arthur Books, 2010 If you hear someone describe this book as "about a lawyer," they're lying. this book is no more about a lawyer than McDonald's is about floor tiles. Both entities contain their descriptors, but each is about something completely different. Instead this is a book about impulses, uncontrollable impulses. It's a book of family and commitment and being. It's a book of relationships and marriage and that "I do" phrase. This book is not about a lawyer. [...]
Sade struggling with the demands of putting out the odd album and being featured in 'where are they now' columns, reports ContactMusic : Sade often considers retirement. The 'Smooth Operator' singer admitted she sometimes thinks she wants to give up, but can't follow through. She said: "Is it still worth it? I think it is. After every album, I think, 'Right that's it, no more.' "But how lucky am I at my age still to be doing this without any outside pressure?" There's no outside pressure. It's not like [...]

Down to the Soar Bridge Inn on Monday 25th January for their young folk musicians feature, compered by Tom Kitching and Gren Bartley who also closed the show. Back in the day... many folk clubs used to be like this, a mixture of ages, old and new musics, a mélange that worked – and drew a large audience... One of my beefs with the current scene is that there is too often a preponderance of older people, playing and audience, a demographic factor that bodes ill for the future, tempered perhaps by the fact that [...]
