November 20 is Universal Children's Day , officially "a day of worldwide fraternity and understanding between children" and unofficially, a great day to explore global music by, for, and about children. (Nov. 20 also marks the day on which the UN adopted the Declaration of the Rights of the Child in 1959, and the Convention on the Rights of the Child in 1989.) Grab your kids and youthful acquaintances, and huddle around to listen. Global Music by, for, and about Kids: Spin The Globe playlist for 20 November 2009 as heard [...]
Summer Dregs Genre: Electro-pop From: Chattanooga, Tennessee United States Summer Dregs is the result of Carl Cadwell collaborating with a group of hyper talented musicians in an effort to prove that the whole is greater than the sum of the parts. The band have chosen their name [...]

Colorado's Monolith Festival is in trouble. Organizers of the three-year-old event, plagued the past two years by fractious Rocky Mountain weather, told fans in an e-mail "the future of the festival is very grim," and that they have "been unable to secure any options" that dig the fest out of its financial hole. Included was a plea for potential buyers/investors. [Full text of the letter after the jump.] Meanwhile, Bonnaroo announced its ninth annual event will be held June 10-13, 2010, near Manchester, Tenn. Tickets go on sale at noon Nov. 27. Meanwhile, only 148 days [...]
This being her third album in seven years, you couldn't accuse Kate Walsh of being prolific compared to many of her peers. She has, however, changed her style over time. This release is far more country rock than the jazzier pop of Tim's House , yet it still retains the beautifully constructed vulnerability of both her previous works. The fragile singer songwriter (a la Joni Mitchell) is still present but, if anything, this album builds on it with aspects of alt-country and Gram Parsons, complete with all the inherent self doubt and insecurities. [...]
The Cave Singers ' sound has certainly developed since their successful 2007 debut album, Invitation Songs . Recorded in Vancouver, Welcome Joy , exhibits more variety than their original signature blend of Americana meets English folk. The alt-county nasal vocal and laid-back slide guitar picking are still there from the outset. The opening track, 'Summer Light', is comforting and familiar, but 'At The Cut' sees the Seattle trio unleash their inner rock child, and they certainly have fun in the process. However, they have not strayed too far from their roots – 'Leap' is [...]
Today, I received a rather happy bit of news about a good old signal in Oklahoma City that might light up Alternative again... Get your best FM antennas out and tuned to 105.3 MHz, folks...it's gonna be a bumpy ride! Of course, I like to look at the bigger picture, and to me it looks like the big radio congloms are staring despondently at their ledgers, noticing that the "accounts receivable" section doesn't even come close to covering the section marked "debts past due", and then wondering what they can sell cheap [...]

Edwin Van Cleef - Overtaken (Radio [...]

UK's Edwin Van Cleef just released his Debut EP for his catchy dance anthem 'Overtaken' on Beatport yesterday. It comes complete with remixes by FM Attack, Mille and Neo Tokyo . This guy's already played live on the same stage as Futurecop! done remixes for Grum and received support from Radio 1 , so he's well on his way. His label Space Disco has given us permission to post the Radio [...]

And speaking as we were yesterday of rock cover versions of songs by extremely goyische 60s folkie Tom Paxton , from 1967, please enjoy L.A. Doors wannabes Clear Light and their interestingly over the top version of Tom's ode to the sinister secret forces that control our destinies, "Mr. Blue." These guys were an interesting bunch, actually. They had two drummers (I think the Dead got the idea from them), one of whom was Dallas Taylor , who went on [...]

'Overtaken' is the debut release for Edwin van Cleef on the Space Disco label. The track has already recieved some major love from Radio 1's Jaymo + George. My favourite bit of the track is when it goes 'Ahhhhhhh-ahhh. Taken Over' and luckily for me this bit is repeated a fair few times. Which is great, it's my favourite bit. It's out now and backed with remixes from Mille, Neo Tokyo and FM Attack. Be sure to check the Mille remix, it's delightfully bonkers.... ♫ Edwin [...]
I guess I'm just a stubborn kind of fellow. I know that our focus tends to be on Brit-pop and Indie-rock, but I just can't help myself from asking you to free your mind. I remember growing up in Detroit, listening to the Canadian national radio station (CBC) and learning about "new wave/punk". They had a show called Brave New Waves and it aired from midnight to 4am, Monday thru Friday. Whenever anyone disparages Canadian music, I tell them that the entire base of my music knowledge starts with this Canadian radio show. Much to [...]

We are absolutely disgusted with the pop scene these days, and disappointed some of these artistes are actually able to make $$ from such bullshit while others are struggling, making damn good indie music. So when someone like Ellie Goulding with such pop sensibilities come along, we are more than happy to put her in the spotlight in hope some of us actually see the light at times. She is signed to Neon Gold Records , along with Penguin Prison and Marina & The Diamonds , [...]
As we abstained from last Monday's Mixtape session due to political reasons we have made up for it by giving you a bumper addition this week which includes: our very own Quantum cadet, Monkey with a Dubstep selection he mixed up for 3zee1 's show on Sub FM last week; a Take Flight Club mix from Doc Daneeka , who we first came across through his nights at the Monkey Bar in Swansea although we didn't make the link [...]
We remember an interview we did with Art Brut, in which they attempted to entertain us with their wisdom and faux pharmacological humor. Frankly, we thought it came off a bit forced and that they took themselves a bit too seriously. Enter Britain's Johnny Foreigner and their attempt to charm us with music and their interpretation of the way of the world. I remember going to see Guided By Voices shortly after they signed to Matador and as they prepared to join a Lollapalooza tour. Despite the lofty expectations of the crowd, Robert Pollard showed up, [...]
One Love at Tank is no more. They've packed up their stuff, waited near some hot girls to get cab and ventured across town to their new home; The Bourbon . Will they be undone by the toxic kebabs, cheap tattoos and 24/7 live clamidia shows of Kings Cross? Probably. But hell, isn't that what weekends in Sydney are all bout!? Judging by the longevity of the One Love franchise to date I'd guess that they've got these things accounted for and will be extending their new lease a few times over. With [...]

[Hey, it's Sam Sparro's birthday on Saturday; shouldn't there be a dance party somewhere? Here's how the weekend shapes up ...] Today: Strokes frontman Julian Casablancas starts his monthlong Friday night residency at downtown's Palace Theatre to showcase the music from his solo debut "Phrazes for the Young." The synth-heavy material, with its big pop choruses, is a departure from the Strokes' garage-rock, but it sounded good at his warm-up show Monday night . Rainbow Arabia opens. ... It's the final night [...]
